The entrainment of bottom deposits (silt and clay) into newly formed ice was investigated in the Amderma/Vaygach flaw lead in the southwestern Kara Sea, Siberian Arctic. Fine-grained bottom deposits and sea ice sediments (SIS) were analyzed by granulometry, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. On average, SIS contain by a factor of four times more silt than the shelf deposits (66.7% vs. 16.3%), and the SIS clay percentage is more than three-fold of the bottom value (31.2% vs. 9.1%). Sand-sized particles are significantly less abundant in SIS compared to bottom sediment (2.1% vs. 74.6%). The preferred entrainment of silt into ice is underpinned by the enhanced silt-to-clay-ratio in SIS compared to bottom deposits. Though silt is preferably entrained into SIS, no evidence was found for preferential ice-entrainment of any silt sub-fraction (coarse, medium or fine). However, sub-angular- and angular-discoidal silt particles are favorably entrained into local sea ice. Clay mineral assemblages in SIS and shelf surface sediments match very well revealing that no individual clay mineral is preferably enriched in SIS or reduced at the bottom. The general textural, compositional and statistical match of fine-grained shelf surface deposits and SIS proves that bottom sediment is the principle source for ice-entrained material in the study area. We propose e.g. wave action and thermohaline convection to take sediment particles upward from the bottom nepheloid layer into the well-mixed 10–40 m deep water column of the Amderma/Vaygach flaw lead, and the turbulent process of suspension freezing to bring sediment particles and frazil crystals into contact, finally leading to the formation of sediment-laden ice. The role of SIS entrainment and export for local/regional shelf erosion and coastal retreat is of minor importance in the SW Kara Sea compared to other circum-Arctic shelf seas. However, the characteristic clay mineral assemblage of local SIS and bottom deposits can help identify the origin of SIS both on regional and Arctic-wide scales.  相似文献

An Intercomparison Among Four Models Of Blowing Snow   总被引:1,自引:3,他引:1  
Four one-dimensional, time-dependent blowing snow models areintercompared. These include three spectral models, PIEKTUK-T,WINDBLAST, SNOWSTORM, and the bulk version of PIEKTUK-T,PIEKTUK-B. Although the four models are based on common physicalconcepts, they have been developed by different research groups. Thestructure of the models, numerical methods, meteorological field treatmentand the parameterization schemes may be different. Under an agreed standardcondition, the four models generally give similar results for the thermodynamic effects of blowing snow sublimation on the atmospheric boundary layer, including an increase of relative humidity and a decrease of the ambient temperature due to blowing snow sublimation. Relative humidity predicted by SNOWSTORM is lower than the predictions of the other models, which leads to a larger sublimation rate in SNOWSTORM. All four models demonstrate that sublimation rates in a column of blowing snow have a single maximum in time, illustrating self-limitation of the sublimation process of blowing snow. However, estimation of the eddy diffusioncoefficient for momentum (Km), and thereby the diffusion coefficients for moisture (Kw) and for heat (Kh), has a significant influence on the process. Sensitivitytests with PIEKTUK-T show that the sublimation rate can be approximately constant with time after an initial phase, if Km is a linear function with height. In order to match the model results with blowing snow observations, some parameters in the standard run, such as settling velocity of blowing snow particles in these models, may need to be changed to more practical values.  相似文献

Scallop dredging grounds in the Firth of Lorn, western Scotland, are juxtaposed with rocky reef habitats raising concerns that reef communities may be impacted by sediment disturbed by nearby scallop dredging. A particle-tracking model of sediment transport and settling is applied at two scales. In the near-field, a suspension of typical sand/gravel-dominated bed sediment is subjected to a steady current across the dredge track. In the far-field, silt particles, which may persist in suspension for multiple tidal cycles, are tracked in the context of a regional model of tidally-driven flow. The principal sedimentary risk to reef habitats is predicted to come from settling sand particles when dredge tracks approach within tens of metres of a reef. The cumulative effect of dredging at the relatively low intensities recorded in this region is not expected to have a significant long-term impact on suspended silt concentrations and settlement in this highly dispersive environment.  相似文献

Numerical experiments are conducted to examine the effects of gravity on monodisperse and polydisperse colloid transport in water-saturated fractures with uniform aperture. Dense colloids travel in water-saturated fractures by advection and diffusion while subject to the influence of gravity. Colloids are assumed to neither attach onto the fracture walls nor penetrate the rock matrix based on the assumptions that they are inert and their size is larger than the pore size of the surrounding solid matrix. Both the size distribution of a colloid plume and colloid density are shown to be significant factors impacting their transport when gravitational forces are important. A constant-spatial-step particle-tracking code simulates colloid plumes with increasing densities transporting in water-saturated fractures while accounting for three forces acting on each particle: a deterministic advective force due to the Poiseuille flow field within the fracture, a random force caused by Brownian diffusion, and the gravitational force. Integer angles of fracture orientation with respect to the horizontal ranging from ±90° are considered: three lognormally distributed colloid plumes with mean particle size of 1 μm (averaged on a volumetric basis) and standard deviation of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 μm are examined. Colloid plumes are assigned densities of 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2.0 g/cm3. The first four spatial moments and the first two temporal moments are estimated as functions of fracture orientation angle and colloid density. Several snapshots of colloid plumes in fractures of different orientations are presented. In all cases, larger particles tend to spread over wider sections of the fracture in the flow direction, but smaller particles can travel faster or slower than larger particles depending on fracture orientation angle.  相似文献

Settling velocity of diluted suspended aggregates is examined under steady-state conditions. It is shown that if the local settling velocity of the suspended mass of sediments at the bottom is gamma distributed, then, the vertical variation of the local mean settling velocity W¯ is proportional to a power 1/r of the local concentration C, where r is the gamma distribution parameter. That is a consequence of the suspended-sediment sorting produced by the vertical dynamics. We present in this paper a simple and computationally efficient numerical model that depicts a column of sublimating, blowing snow. This bulk model predicts the mixing ratio of suspended snow by solving an equation that considers the diffusion, settling and sublimation of blowing snow in a time-dependent mode. The bulk model results compare very well with those of a previous spectral version of the model, while increasing its computational efficiency by a factor of about one hundred. This will allow the use of the model to estimate the effects of blowing snow upon the atmospheric boundary layer and to the mass balance of such regions as the Mackenzie River Basin of Canada.  相似文献

The determination of the critical particle size between solid and fluid phases, i.e., the suspension competence, is fundamental for debris flow. A method for determining suspension competence based on particle size analysis is presented in this paper. Suspension competence of static experimental water-debris mixtures prepared with the sediment of Jiangjia Gully is -0.025 mm if the bulk density is less than 1,800 kg m-3 and it increases with bulk density of more concentrated mixtures. Suspension competence of natural debris flows in Jiangjia Gully increases exponentially with the bulk density. These two data sets are compared in order to understand the suspension mechanism. It is concluded that turbulence may play a leading role in particle suspension in non-viscous and sub-viscous debris flows, while in viscous debris flows both matrix strength and excess pore water pressure play important roles.  相似文献
