Comparative review of marine mammal guidance implemented during naval exercises

This article reviews the types and effectiveness of marine mammal mitigation measures used during some naval activities worldwide. The three main standard methods used to mitigate the potential impacts of naval sonar sound on marine mammals are (1) time/area planning (of exercises/active sonar use) to avoid marine mammals; (2) implementation of operational procedures (e.g. ‘soft start’ - where sound levels are gradually increased over time); and (3) monitoring of animals for the purpose of maintaining an ‘exclusion zone’ around the sound source. Suggestions towards a minimum worldwide mitigation standard are made.

“第一军规”诞生地——湖南桂东红色旅游开发研究

桂东县是井冈山革命根据地的重要组成部分,是我军第一军规颁布地,红色旅游资源亮点突出,是湖南红色旅游开发的一个新热点。通过实地调研和区域比较,认为桂东县红色旅游资源的历史价值厚重,资源开发的支撑条件多样,但红色旅游发展劣势与挑战也十分明显。因此,作为桂东县经济发展新的突破口,其红色旅游开发应确立总体发展思路,搞好重点景区项目策划,注重红色旅游产品整合,加强红色旅游市场营销,严格红色旅游资源保护,以促进其可持续发展。     

This isn’t your usual obstacle course: Critical pedagogy with Special Operations Forces

In an effort to practice what we teach, this paper moves beyond a simple academic-military binary and summarizes the efforts of four faculty members to teach critical thinking to US Army Special Operations Forces (SOF) officers. All four of us teach graduate level courses in a non-thesis, interdisciplinary Master’s degree program intended to satisfy military interest in civilian education. We view our work as an effort to think both with security and as an intervention into security. We position this work as an endeavor of public geographies and critical pedagogy. The paper begins by considering public geographies and the supposed academic/military binary and explores subtle and not so subtle interactions between academics and the U.S. national security apparatus. Each of the four co-authors—a geographer, a sociologist, and two political scientists—describes a particular approach to teaching critical thinking and comments on how the SOF students have responded. We conclude the paper by reflecting on the value of this work within the broader context of our shared mission as scholars and teachers.     

Logics of change for military-to-wildlife conversions in the United States

Since 1988, more than 20 US military bases have been redesignated as national wildlife refuges. In order to understand the processes of these military-to-wildlife (M2W) conversions and their implications, I examine three logics that help to produce these particular changes: Biodiversity, Brownfields, and Serendipity. These logics contribute to a broader discourse of ecological militarization that frames military practices as compatible with and contributing to environmental protection. I focus on the case of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Colorado, USA, to examine how these logics of conversion are mobilized into practice, and what such changes mean as they bring militarism and environmental conservation together in reconfigured spaces.
