This paper presents laboratory experiments of aerodynamically fully rough, neutral flow over a series of sinusoidal hills. Two sets of hills, with maximum gradients (slopes) of 0.2 (10°) and 0.4 (20°), were considered.The flow remained attached in the former case while separation occurredin the latter. Characteristics of the mean flow and turbulence statistics are discussed and compared with profiles over a flat surface covered with the same roughness as the hills. Comparisons are made with linear theory predictions for the flow in the inner region and aloft. Accurate measurements of the surface pressure were also made, enabling the comparison between the measured pressure drag and predictions from theoretical and computational work with different turbulent closure schemes. Organised secondary flow in the spanwise direction, observed previously in both experimental and computational studies, was also observed here over the small hills.  相似文献

New laboratory measurements of NO2 absorption cross-sections have been performed between 300 and 500 nm at ambient temperature with improved experimental conditions: low gas pressures, long absorption paths, suitable absorbance values, narrow spectral bandwidths. The data, stored at 0.01 nm intervals, have been compared to those of the more recent studies and some reasons of disagreement are discussed.In the photolysis region below 400 nm, our absorption cross-sections are larger than those previously published, suggesting that the photodissociation coefficient calculated from the current data sets is underestimated. In the structured region of the spectrum above 400 nm, improvement of the resolution gives more precise values useful for optical measurements in atmosphere.Unité de Recherche Associée au CNRS.  相似文献

A study to explain the emission of nitric oxide from a marsh soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In the period 18–21 September 1989, soil NO emission was studied at Halvergate Marshes, Norfolk (U.K.) within the framework of the BIATEX-LOVENOX joint field experiment. Using a dynamic chamber technique, 186 measurements at four plots were performed showing a net NO flux of 7.2–14.6×10–12 kgN m–2 s–1. Soil samples from a soil profile (1.0 m) at a representative site and from the uppermost layer (0.1 m) of each of the four plots were sent to the laboratory for (a) detailed physical and chemical soil analysis, (b) determination of NO production rates, NO uptake rate constants, and NO compensation mixing ratios, and (c) characterization of the microbial processes involved. A diffusive model (Galbally and Johansson, 1989) was applied to the laboratory results to infer NO fluxes of the individual soil samples. When we compared these fluxes with those measured in the field, we found agreement within a factor 2–4. Furthermore, laboratory studies showed, that NO was produced and consumed only in the upper soil layer (0–0.1 m depth) and that the NO production and consumption activities observed in the Halvergate marsh soil were most probably due to the anaerobic metabolism of denitrifying bacteria operating in anaerobic microniches within the generally aerobic soil.  相似文献

Field measurements were carried out to calculate the threshold friction velocity for snow saltation, and mass fluxes during snow drift. The wind was measured in three components by an ultrasonic anemometer, and the mass fluxes were determined using an optical sensor (snow particle counter), acoustic sensors (Flowcapt) and mechanical traps. The threshold friction velocity was found to be correlated to the grain size (R2=0.75). The mass flux measurements were compared with numerical simulations of snow drift, and it was demonstrated that the maximum snow transport takes place at shear stress values of roughly two times the average shear stress over 20 min. By implementing a probability distribution for the shear stress the mass flux was simulated with only the mean measured value of the shear stress as input. This procedure enables the future use of the numerical model for operational applications.  相似文献

Avcılar is the suburb of Istanbul that was most heavily damaged during the August 17, 1999 Mw 7.4 Izmit earthquake. Strong ground motion caused fatalities and damage in Avcılar despite being 90 km from the epicenter. We deployed five portable seismograph stations equipped with Reftek 24-bit recorders and L4C-3D seismometers for 2 months, in order to understand why the local site response was different from elsewhere in Istanbul. A reference station was placed on a hard rock site, and the remaining four stations were placed on other geological units, in areas that had experienced varying levels of damage. We calculated frequency-dependent ground amplification curves by taking the ratios of the spectra at soft and hard rock sites. We obtained similar site response curves for most earthquakes at each site in the frequency range of 0.3–1.6 Hz, and observed no significant site amplification beyond 2.0 Hz at any site. The overall characteristics of the recorded S-waveforms and our modeling of the calculated site amplification curves are consistent with amplification as a result of trapping of seismic energy within a 100–150 m thick, low-velocity subsurface layer. We also review the applicability of microtremor measurements to estimate local site effects at Avcılar. For these data, we used ratios of spectra of horizontal to vertical components to obtain each site response. These results are compared with standard spectral ratios. These microtremor measurements provide consistent estimates of the amplification at most sites at the higher end of the frequency band, namely above 1 Hz. The results from both methods indeed agree well in this part of the frequency band. However, the microtremor method fails to detect amplification at lower frequencies, namely <1.0 Hz.  相似文献

Accurate OH and HO2 (collectively called HOx) measurements by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) may be contaminated by spurious signals from interfering atmospheric chemicals or from the instrument itself. Interference tests must be conducted to ensure that observed OH signal originates solely from ambient OH and is not due to instrument artifacts. Several tests were performed on the Penn State LIF HOx instrument, both in the laboratory and in the field. Theseincluded measurements of the instrument's zero signal by using either zero air or perfluoropropylene to remove OH, examination of spectral interferences from naphthalene, sulfur dioxide, and formaldehyde, and tests of interferences by addition of suspected interfering atmospheric chemicals, including ozone, hydrogen peroxide, nitrous acid, formaldehyde, nitric acid, acetone, and organic peroxy radicals (RO2). All tests lacked evidence ofsignificant interferences for measurements in the atmosphere, including highly polluted urban environments.  相似文献

By performing buoyancy-driven fracture experiments in brittle gelatin we observe that the ascent velocity of a fracture containing a finite volume of fluid increases when approaching the free surface. We theoretically describe this free-surface effect and quantify it by introducing an effective depth-dependent fracture toughness and developing an ascent model on the basis of linear fracture mechanics. We develop a successful inversion approach and resolve the actual and critical fracture length and the ascent velocity far away from the free surface from the observation of the fracture tip migration alone. Other parameters, as the fluid volume included in the fracture and the in situ fracture toughness, can be derived. Applying the model and inversion to the 1998 eruption at Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion Island, reveals estimates of the length and critical length of the feeding magma batch, the magma batch volume and the in situ fracture toughness. It further indicates that the ascent velocity of the magma batch was probably much smaller at greater depths and that the batch might have been initiated several months or years before the eruption.  相似文献

In Appling studies, the strain rate in China has been computed from using different methods, resulting in quite different estimates of the strain rate the geo-statistics from GPS velocity field of Chinese continent, we obtain the velocity value at each little regularly spaced grid point, by kriging interpolation and the component of strain rate for each volume element, using a method similar to the derivation of shape functions in the finite element algorithm. Therefore the distribution of the strain rate field in whole for the Chinese continent is presented. The result shows that the orientations of principal strain rates are consistent with those of the P and T axes of focal mechanisms. The distribution of maximum shear strain rate clearly delineates some major active fault zones surrounding the Tibetan Plateau. The maximum shear strain rate is comparable with that obtained from analysis of seismic moment release. In part of the Tibetan Plateau containing normal faults and pull-apart grabens, we obtain an extensional state of strain. The absolute value of the strain rate in West China is approximately 5 times larger than that of East China, and the pattern of the strain rate field in most of the Chinese continent is controlled by the India/Eurasia collision.  相似文献
