The normally-closed Caspian Sea is known for large changes in relative sea-level (of ∼170 m) during the late Quaternary. These transgressive/regressive events influenced the topography, sedimentation and ecosystems of a large area, of up to 1 million km2. The Volga River has played an important role in the water balance of the Caspian Quaternary basins but our understanding of the temporal evolution is poorly constrained. Recent studies on the evolution of the Lower Volga have focused mainly on the subaerial sequence of loess-palaeosol series corresponding to a long-duration Caspian low stand (the so-called “Atelian regression” from ∼90 to ∼25 ka). In this study we address, for the first time, the temporal evolution of the Volga River during the late Quaternary, as recorded in the many layers of alluvial sands at the Raygorod reference section. This 50 m high outcrop contains a complicated sequence of different types of interlayered alluvium (channel and floodplain facies), a loess-palaeosol sequence with a weakly developed palaeosol, and marine sediments of the Khvalynian transgression (Chocolate Clay facies). The new chronology, based on 35 samples, is derived using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) analysis of sand-sized quartz, with support from post-infra-red infra-red stimulated luminescence (post-IR IRSL) from K-rich feldspar grains to date the older parts of the section. The new ages identify five stages of the topography development in the northern parts of the Lower Volga: (1) an MIS 5a flood-plain in deltaic/estuary environments (>90 ka) during a high-stand of the Caspian Sea (Hyrcanian transgression); (2) a transition from deltaic/estuary conditions to a river valley with normal alluvial sedimentation and sporadic stabilization reflected in palaeosol development (80–70 ka); (3) a palaeo-Volga channel migration at elevations of 4–8 m msl during 69–62 ka, evidence of a brief increase in Caspian Sea-level and blocking of the Volga flow; (4) a subaerial stage with high-speed accumulation of loess during MIS 4 to MIS 2, containing one weakly developed palaeosol (MIS 3c) and pedocomplex of three combined palaeosols of the beginning of MIS2 (30–24 ka); (5) a rapid Khvalynian transgression, starting at the Raygorod location at ∼18.3 ka, with relatively weak marine erosion of the top 40–60 cm of loess cover, presumably because of the rapid migration of the coastline in the flat Northern Caspian Lowland. 相似文献

Luminescence thermochronometry is sensitive to very low temperatures (below ∼120 °C), and enables the resolution of thermal histories over sub-Quaternary timescales. Here we apply a multi-elevated-temperature post-infrared infrared-stimulated luminescence (MET-pIR-IRSL) measurement protocol to feldspar minerals to extract thermal histories. These thermal histories depend on the thermal stability of the MET signal, and are based on the thermal kinetic parameters extracted from isothermal decay experiments. However, the derived thermal kinetic parameters vary with experimental conditions, specifically with the isothermal holding temperatures (ITL) used. We analyse samples with independently known thermal histories, together with synthetic thermal history samples and samples with unknown thermal histories to test the validity of thermal kinetic parameters obtained from different combinations of isothermal holding data. This approach is tested on feldspars of different mineralogies and lithologies. We find that the temperatures inferred from inverting the data change, depending both on the number and on the highest ITL temperature used for thermal kinetic parameter derivation. Analysed samples validate the MET-pIR-IRSL protocol for extracting thermal histories, and we suggest that four isothermal holding temperatures between 190 and 250 °C are used for appropriate thermal kinetic parameter derivation. 相似文献

Detailed geomorphological and chronological investigations of the NW-Namibian Amspoort Silt formation show that the sediments are typical river-end deposits. This type of endoreic sediment, occuring only in desert margin areas, provides valuable information about the palaeo-environment. In the Hoanib valley, the fine-grained deposits have buried riverine trees. Radiocarbon dating of the wood and luminescence dating of the sediments allow a detailed reconstruction of the aggradation processes. Accumulation started 10 km downstream of Amspoort around the beginning of the 15th century and ended in the 19th century, some kilometres upstream of Amspoort. This upstream shift of sedimentation during the Little Ice Age was caused by gradually decreasing runoff resulting from aridification of the upper part of the Hoanib river catchment lying east of the Namib desert margin ≥1.200 m a.s.l.The Amspoort Silt terrace is evidence of palaeo-hydrological fluctuations in NW-Namibia. At present, the Hoanib river erodes deeply into the silty deposits, indicating that NW-Namibia receives more monsoonal rainfall today than during the Little Ice Age. However, this contradicts the hypothesis of a (continual) natural aridification of NW-Namibia (Damaraland, Kaokoveld) since the mid-19th century in the course of global climatic change. Rather, deposition and erosion of the Amspoort Silts indicate that landscape degradation in NW-Namibia is primarily anthropogenically induced and most probably not accelerated by a decrease in precipitation. 相似文献

Some of the largest catastrophic outbursts of periglacial lakes known in the geological history of the Earth have been identified in the Altai Mountains. Traces of these events are recorded in the form of large terraces, predominantly composed of gravel material with numerous horizons of large boulders and blocks. Determining the age of these large-scale events is difficult due to the lack of suitable material (e.g. organics, well-bleached sand) and the specific genesis of these sediments. The results of cosmogenic radionuclide dating suggest a post-LGM age both for the source of the flood water and for different elements of the catafluvial terraces in the Chuya and Katun river valleys. Nevertheless, the age(s) of catastrophic breakthrough remains controversial. On the basis of a few IRSL ages, and geological and other evidence, some view the event as occurring around MIS 5. In this study, we investigate loess-like loams overlying the catafluvial sediments on the surface of the highest level terrace, ∼200 m above present river level. A total of 24 samples for luminescence dating were obtained, for which the OSL, IR50, and pIRIR50,290 signals were measured to control the degree of signal zeroing and the dating reliability. The age of the loess in all three pits was from 0.5 ka at the top to 23 ka at the base of the loess strata. From a sand layer in the top of the catafluvial deposits, two ages of ∼85–90 ka were obtained from feldspar pIRIR50,290. These results provide a minimum pre-LGM age for the geomorphological surface of a major catafluvial terrace in the Altai Mountains. 相似文献

Located at the interface between the temperate westerly and sub-tropical climate systems, South Africa's winter rainfall zone (WRZ) is a key location in understanding Late Quaternary atmospheric circulation dynamics. Inactive eolian deposits in the WRZ, comprising pan-fringing lunette and coastal dunes, were investigated to establish their depositional ages and utility as paleoenvironmental indicators. The resulting optical luminescence chronology reveals episodic lunette accretion at 60,000-45,000 yr, 12,000-13,000 yr, 2800-2600 yr, 1200 yr, and <1000 yr, with coastal dune ages clustering at 4100-4700 yr.Episodes of lunette and coastal dune accretion on the Agulhas Plain are temporally distinct, reflecting differing fundamental controls on their activity. Comparisons to previously published data also reveal that the lunettes differ in age from more ancient coastal eolianites. Lunette deposition is asynchronous between locations, reflecting the topographic and hydrological setting of the individual pans. In near-coastal settings, with limited surface recharge, lunette accretion appears to be at least partially controlled by sea level induced changes in groundwater levels. Those pans with more significant surface recharge (particularly from fluvial systems) may produce less ambiguous paleoenvironmental records, with pan status more strongly reflecting regional hydrological conditions. Lunette orientation is indicative of strong westerly winds during both the Pleistocene and Holocene. Lunette accretion would have been promoted by reduced on-shore moisture transport during the summer months, enhancing rainfall seasonality. Such conditions would have been promoted by increased continentality as the Agulhas Bank was exposed during low sea level stands. 相似文献

Enigmatic rock structures in the form of walls, chambers, tunnels, and cairns are common archaeological features in northeastern United States, but the age of their construction is mostly unknown. Debate persists as to whether they are colonial or pre-colonial in age. Luminescence dating was applied at several sites to sediments underneath the rocks or to the rocks themselves. Sediment ages obtained from potassium feldspars using IRSL place their construction in the late 16th century, just before sustained colonial settlement. Sediment ages obtained from quartz using OSL place their construction later, but the much weaker quartz signals have issues, primarily the prevalence of a slower bleaching component. These raise questions on the credibility of the quartz ages. The age from one rock, also using IRSL, supports the K-feldspar sediment ages. The evidence suggests a pre-colonial construction, by ancestors of modern native Americans. 相似文献

The high-temperature (e.g., >200 °C) post-infrared infrared (pIRIR) stimulated luminescence of feldspar has been widely used for dating, because it usually suffers negligibly from anomalous fading. However, compared to the quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) or low-temperature (e.g., 50 °C) IR stimulated luminescence (IRSL) from feldspars, the high-temperature pIRIR signals have been shown to bleach more slowly and usually have high residual does of a few Gys or more, which limits its application to date relatively young samples and may cause problems for correcting residual dose/signal. In this study, we investigated the bleachability of K-feldspar pIRIR signals for individual grains. A significant variation in the bleachability of the pIRIR signal was observed among different K-feldspar grains from the same sample. Experiments show that such a variability may result in different residual doses for different grains and, consequently, additional scatter in De values. We present a method for quickly testing the bleachability of individual grains. Our result suggests that selecting the easy-to-bleach grains for De determination provides an efficient way to date young samples using high-temperature pIRIR signals, which avoids the compromise of using low-temperature pIRIR signals that may suffer from anomalous fading. 相似文献

Dating agricultural artefacts such as field walls and clearance cairns using radiocarbon can be challenging, especially since the association with datable material may be poor. Rock surface burial dating using luminescence offers an alternative. Here we report on the luminescence dating of a medieval circular stone-walled enclosure at Sønnebøe, northern Scania, Sweden, using both buried rocks and sediments. Luminescence burial profiles from IRSL signals measured at 50 °C (IR50) indicated significant prior light exposure in 7 of the 8 samples tested (5 granite, 2 felsic gneiss), in some cases multiple exposure burial cycles were indicated. These rock surfaces had apparently been exposed for sufficient time to allow accurate IRSL ages for the most recent burial event. In contrasts, no useful post-IR IRSL profiles were obtained indicating that this signal was not sufficiently reset to allow accurate determination of the burial dose on any of these rocks. IR50 fading corrections (typically ∼50%) were derived by comparing field saturation with that induced in the laboratory. Quartz extracted from sediments surrounding the rocks gave an average measured to given dose ratio of 1.03 ± 0.01 (n = 90), and these sediment samples were then dated using multigrain aliquots; the corresponding feldspar dose recovery ratio obtained using rock samples was 0.98 ± 0.05 (n = 28). A total of 15 ages were derived; 8 quartz OSL ages from the disturbed coarse grained sediments surrounding the structure, and 7 fading corrected IR50 ages from the surfaces of rocks (2–3 mm chips, ∼1 mm thick) used in the construction of the structure itself. The exposure events preserved by the ring enclosure stones unequivocally show wall building taking place at the site between 800 and 300 years ago. 相似文献

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of a series of glaciofluvial/glaciodeltaic sediments in central Buchan and Aberdeen has recently been undertaken. The aims of this project are to test the chronological model proposed by the most recent regional review and the suggestion that parts of Buchan may have remained ice-free during the last glacial maximum (late marine isotope stage (MIS) 3 and MIS 2 29–15 ka). The preliminary results indicate that during the Devensian (ca. 116–12 ka), extensive areas of Buchan may have been glaciated earlier than previously believed (possibly during MIS 4, 72–60 ka), but parts of the region show no depositional evidence of later glaciation. Some waterlain sediments from the Ugie Valley have yielded OSL ages indicating deposition during MIS 5d to MIS 5a (116–72 ka). We discuss whether the absence of overlying glaciogenic sediments at these locations raises questions about the reliability of the OSL ages or about existing models of the Devensian glaciation of Buchan. 相似文献

This study focused on the luminescence dating of sediments from Lake El’gygytgyn, a meteorite impact crater 100 km north of
the Arctic Circle in northeast Siberia, formed 3.58 Ma ago. The sediment is principally eolian deposited in to a lake with
nearly permanently ice. The fine-grained polymineral and quartz extracts taken from nine distinct levels from the upper 12.3 m
of sediment core PG1351 were dated by infrared stimulated (IRSL) and green stimulated luminescence (GSL) using multiple aliquot
additive dose procedures. The veracity of these ages is evaluated by comparing to an age model for the core derived from magnetic
excursions and from correlation of variations of the magnetic susceptibility record to similar magnitude variations in δ 18O in the Greenland Ice core record. The IRSL ages from the upper 9 m of core correspond well with the independent age control
for the past ca. 200 ka. However, sediments deeper in the core at 12.3 m with an inferred age of ca. 250 ka age yield a saturated
IRSL response and therefore a non-finite OSL age. The youngest sediment dated from 0.70 m depth yielded the IRSL age of ca.
11.5 ka, older than the corresponding age of 9.3–8.8 ka, indicating a discrepancy in dating the youngest sediments in the
upper 1 m of core. This study confirms the utility of IRSL by the multiple aliquot additive dose method to date sediments
<200 ka old from eastern Siberia.
