Ternary (triangular) diagrams show the compositional variation of three end-members, recalculated to 100%, and represent the projection into two dimensions of three or more components (since an end-member may represent the sum of more than one original component), and hence multiple space. During the present century they have been of particular importance in chemistry, the earth sciences, colour-mixing and the studies of colour that underlie the development of geochemical colour maps. Such concepts can be traced back to Newton's Opticks although he did not use an explicit ternary theory of colour mixing. Development of the trichromatic theory of colour deficiency began with Mariotte in the 17th century and was definitively established by Maxwell in the 1850s. These colour theorems underlie the development in recent years of the colour maps now in widespread use in geochemistry. The progress of regional geochemical mapping in the British Isles has gone hand-in-hand with the development of computer software and hardware. The use of multi-element colour-combined geochemical maps can be traced from early work at Imperial College by Webb and his co-workers (1964–79) to its later application in the British Geological Survey's Geochemical Atlas series (from 1983 onwards). Between 1955 and 1975 the use of ternary diagrams came to be commonly used in studies of mineralogical composition, including economic minerals, petrology, classification, and phase relationships. In igneous petrology, the quartz–alkali-feldspar–plagioclase-feldspathoid double-triangle has achieved increasing international acceptance. We illustrate these applications with examples pertinent to the Northern Highland Caledonides, with particular emphasis on the lamprophyres and associated rocks. Two distinct multivariate trends of variation are shown to be present which may warrant further investigation to elucidate their bearing on Caledonian mineralisation.  相似文献

Clast size variations are reported for a relict talus slope in northwest Ireland. Alternating longitudinal zones of coarse debris below buttresses and less coarse debris below gullies give the talus pronounced lateral variations in clast size that are related to joint spacing variations in the talus source area. Longitudinal variations in clast size are also present. The talus accumulated predominantly by the process of rockfall. Other processes frequently associated with lateral size variations were not significantly effective during talus development. Talus sliding may have modified some patterns of rockfall size grading.  相似文献

The conservative potential of arsenic in the relatively pristine waters of Galway Bay, an estuarine system in the west of Ireland, is examined through the inter-seasonal variations in the distribution of its total, hydride and non-hydride fractions. The arsenic concentrations in Galway Bay and local fresh water sources at all seasons were lower than what is considered the natural seawater concentration of 2 μg L−1 (27 nM). The effects of physical mixing, biological uptake and regeneration of arsenic on its distribution are considered. The degree of biological uptake and regeneration of the element are determined by a first order speciation between total arsenic (a small part of which should be of organic origin) and hydride arsenic (mostly of inorganic origin). The structural similarity of arsenic species to phosphate in seawater causes arsenic to be taken up by biota, which then have to detoxify it, so results are presented against phosphate to determine the degree of biological transformation of arsenic at different seasons. An in-house, batch type system of hydride generation coupled to electro-thermal atomic absorption spectrometry is used for the analysis of arsenic; this is preceded by UV-digestion prior to the measurement of total arsenic. Results show only a small association of arsenic with phosphate but a near linear, positive distribution pattern between arsenic and salinity in Galway Bay (R2 ∼ 0.6), which is reproducible among seasons, indicating that in this environment the biological uptake of arsenic is likely to be a much slower process than the physical mixing of the water masses.  相似文献

Landslides in blanket peat on Cuilcagh Mountain, northwest Ireland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The northern and eastern sides of the Cuilcagh Mountain upland, in northwest Ireland, are mantled with over 50 km2 of blanket bog that has experienced an unusually high spatial and temporal frequency of peat mass movements. In all, 29 peaty-debris slides, nine bog slides, two peat slides and five more peat landslides of uncertain type have been recorded within this study area. More than 27 km2 of this peatland has been afforded several levels of statutory protection as well as international recognition of its geo-environmental importance. Field and laboratory investigations of the peat at several of the more recent failure sites showed it to be typical of Irish and Pennine (northern England) blanket bogs in most physical and hydrological respects. Field geomorphological evidence and modelling of stability thresholds indicate that the particular susceptibility of the Cuilcagh Mountain blanket bog to failure arises from two local factors: (i) the attainment of threshold maximum peat depths on the East Cuilcagh plateau, and (ii) the unconformable deposition of thin layers of glacial till (in places) and blanket peat over the pre-existing topographic surface formed from the major shale formations that underlie the northern slopes. With two exceptions, there is no conclusive evidence that human activities and management strategies for the area have had any significant influence on the occurrence of the peat landslides. The high frequency of large rainfall events since 1961 that did not trigger landslides suggests that failures are unlikely to become more frequent in response to climate change effects because they are controlled by slowly changing internal thresholds.  相似文献

Analysis of a 275 m‐thick section in the Milford Borehole, GSI‐91‐25, from County Carlow, Ireland, has revealed an unusual sequence of shallow subtidal, peritidal and sabkha facies in rocks of mid?‐late Chadian to late Holkerian (Viséan, Lower Carboniferous) age. Sedimentation occurred on an inner ramp setting, adjacent to the Leinster Massif. The lower part of the sequence (late Chadian age) above the basal subtidal bioclastic unit is dominated by oolite sand facies associations. These include a lower regressive dolomitized, oolitic peloidal mobile shoal, and an upper, probably transgressive, backshoal oolite sand. A 68 m‐thick, well‐developed peritidal sequence is present between the oolitic intervals. These rocks consist of alternating stromatolitic fenestral mudstone, dolomite and organic shale, with evaporite pseudomorphs and subaerial exposure horizons containing pedogenic features. In the succeeding Arundian–Holkerian strata, transgressive–regressive carbonate units are recognized. These comprise high‐energy, backshoal subtidal cycles of argillaceous skeletal packstones, bioclastic grainstones with minor oolites and algal wackestones to grainstones and infrequent algal stromatolite horizons. The study recognizes for the first time the peritidal and sabkha deposits in Chadian rocks adjacent to the Leinster Massif in the eastern Irish Midlands. These strata appear to be coeval with similar evaporite‐bearing rocks in County Wexford that are developed on the southern margin of this landmass, and similar depositional facies exist further to the east in the South Wales Platform, south of St. George's Land, and in Belgium, south of the Brabant Massif. The presence of evaporites in the peritidal facies suggests that dense brines may have formed adjacent to the Leinster Massif. These fluids may have been involved in regional dolomitization of Chadian and possibly underlying Courceyan strata. They may also have been a source of high salinity fluids associated with nearby base‐metal sulphide deposits. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Burren plateau of County Clare is a classic example of a plateau karst characterised by patchy, thin soils, a lack of defined surface drainage, and in the instance of the Burren, a rich floristic, archaeological and landscape heritage. Since accession to the European Union and, in particular, as a result of Common Agricultural Policy initiatives, attempts have been made to raise farm incomes and to modernise agriculture in areas such as the Burren. Due to the encouragement of land reclamation and silage production has largely replaced hay farming for winter fodder. These changes pose a threat to groundwater quality by enhancing the leaching of artificial fertilizers or of organic pollutants. The Burren is highly vulnerable to water pollution from silage effluent because of its thin or absent soils and its highly karstified aquifers. A full survey of silage clamps was made in the summers of 1991 and 1992. For each site data were collected to derive the following: mass of silage, effluent produced, hazard rating of site to groundwater, likely discharge of effluent to groundwater and groundwater dilution index. About 60% of clamps were considered to be high risk and 23% medium risk. About 92% of all sites probably allow some effluent to infiltrate groundwater. The microbiota of the upper Viséan (Asbian–Brigantian) rocks in the Lough Allen Basin in northwest Ireland is analysed. The Middle Mississippian sequence studied extends from the upper part of the Dartry Limestone/Bricklieve Limestone formations of the Tyrone Group to the Carraun Shale Formation of the Leitrim Group. The rocks have been traditionally dated by ammonoid faunas representing the B2a to P2c subzones. The Meenymore Formation (base of the Leitrim Group) also contains conodont faunas of the informal partial‐range Mestognathus bipluti zone. The upper Brigantian Lochriea nodosa Conodont Zone was recognized by previous authors in the middle of the Carraun Shale Formation (Ardvarney Limestone Member), where it coincides with upper Brigantian ammonoids of the Lusitanoceras granosus Subzone (P2a). Foraminifera and algae in the top of the Dartry Limestone Formation are assigned to the upper Cf6γ Foraminifera Subzone (highest Asbian), whereas those in the Meenymore Formation belong to the lower Cf6δ Foraminifera Subzone (lower Brigantian). The Dartry Limestone Formation–Meenymore Formation boundary is thus correlated with the Asbian–Brigantian boundary in northwest Ireland. For the first time, based on new data, a correlation between the ammonoid, miospore, foraminiferan and conodont zonal schemes is demonstrated. The foraminiferans and algae, conodonts and ammonoids are compared with those from other basins in Ireland, northern England, and the German Rhenish Massif. Historically, the Asbian–Brigantian boundary has been correlated with several levels within the P1a Ammonoid Subzone. However, the new integrated biostratigraphical data indicate that the Asbian–Brigantian boundary in northwest Ireland is probably located within the B2a Ammonoid Subzone and the NM Miospore Zone, but the scarcity of ammonoids in the Tyrone Group precludes an accurate placement of that boundary within this subzone. Thermal groundwater is currently being exploited for district-scale heating in many locations world-wide. The chemical compositions of these thermal waters reflect the provenance and circulation patterns of the groundwater, which are controlled by recharge, rock type and geological structure. Exploring the provenance of these waters using multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) techniques increases our understanding of the hydrothermal circulation systems, and provides a reliable tool for assessing these resources.Hydrochemical data from thermal springs situated in the Carboniferous Dublin Basin in east-central Ireland were explored using MSA, including hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), to investigate the source aquifers of the thermal groundwaters. To take into account the compositional nature of the hydrochemical data, compositional data analysis (CoDa) techniques were used to process the data prior to the MSA.The results of the MSA were examined alongside detailed time-lapse temperature measurements from several of the springs, and indicate the influence of three important hydrogeological processes on the hydrochemistry of the thermal waters: 1) salinity and increased water-rock interaction; 2) dissolution of carbonates; and 3) dissolution of sulfides, sulfates and oxides associated with mineral deposits. The use of MSA within the CoDa framework identified subtle temporal variations in the hydrochemistry of the thermal springs, which could not be identified with more traditional graphing methods, or with a standard statistical approach. The MSA was successful in distinguishing different geological settings and different annual behaviours within the group of springs. This study demonstrates the usefulness of the application of MSA within the CoDa framework in order to better understand the underlying controlling processes governing the hydrochemistry of a group of thermal springs in a low-enthalpy setting.  相似文献
