This study was conducted to determine the effects of the waste-rock dump (WRD) of the underground polymetallic Balya Mine on the Kocacay River and eventually on Lake Manyas in Turkey. Data presented in this paper include geochemical characteristics of various kinds of water (mine, surface and groundwater) and of suspended-particle samples in the vicinity of Balya. The more polluted mine waters have low pH and high conductivity, while high concentrations of Zn, Cd, Mn tend to be found in the dry and wet seasons. High concentrations of Pb, As, Cr, Cu and S appear only in the wet season. The sources of the heavy metal concentration within the Kocacay River are leached waste, surface run off, and overflow from the spillway of the WRD. To minimize the formation of acids and dissolved metal, and for the remediation of the harmful effects of extreme contamination conditions, it is recommended that lime or alkali materials and organic carbon be added to simulate the action of sulfate-reducing bacteria. 相似文献

The aim of this paper was to analyze the processing and transport of aluminum speciation through the terrestrial and aquatic
ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay landscape. Stream waters were sampled in 14 different streams from the Susquehanna River
watershed to the upper reach of Chesapeake Bay. The basic water quality data were documented and Al speciation was evaluated
by modified MINEQL computer model. It was found that the increase in acidity in some of the stream waters near New York were
closely linked with a marked decline in basic cation concentrations. In these areas, the sum of the toxic forms of Al3+ plus AlOH2+ and Al(OH)2
+ concentrations exceeds the critical level of 5 μmol l–1. A potential threat from aluminum may occur.

In order to assess the magnitude and impact at affected mine sites of acid rock drainage (ARD), fixed-frequency sampling is often employed. This often involves manual sampling, at regular time intervals, of water and solids. It is felt that such sampling does not adequately describe the system evolution. Continuous monitoring offers a viable alternative in that it can better follow the seasonal fluctuations and high-frequency variations that characterize ARD. The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding about the formation of THM (trihalomethanes), HAA (haloacetic acids), and AOX (adsorbable organic halogen) in river water (river Ruhr, Essen) through a chlorination kinetics approach. The effect of chlorination time and preozonation on the formation of THM, HAA, and AOX substances was studied. Preozonation can reduce the chlorine demand and the precursors for AOX and THM. THM generation was reduced further, when the ozone dosage consumed increased from 3.5 to 12.5 mg in the 1.4 L reaction vessel. AOX and TCAA (trichloroacetic acid) concentrations also decreased dramatically when 3.5 mg of ozone had reacted with the river water, but a higher dose of ozone did not further reduce AOX and TCAA formations. Besides, the characteristics of organic matter in raw water, ozonated water, and preozonated/chlorinated water was investigated. The results suggest the formation of low‐molecular‐weight acids with low UV absorbance when high‐molecular refractive matter is oxidized. 相似文献

Road construction through sulfidic materials in Virginia has resulted in localized acid rock drainage (ARD) that threatens water quality, sedimentation, integrity of building materials, and vegetation management. Geologic formations associated with acid roadcuts were characterized by potential peroxide acidity (PPA), expressed as calcium carbonate equivalence (CCE), and total sulfur (total-S) in order to develop a statewide sulfide hazard rating map. The geologic formations were grouped into four categories based on potential acid-producing severity: i) Tabb formation (PPA<6 Mg CCE/1000 Mg; S<0.2%); ii) Ashe formation (PPA<18 Mg CCE/1000 Mg; S<2.0%); iii) Chesapeake Group, Lower Tertiary deposits, Millboro shale, Marcellus shale, and Needmore Formation (PPA<60 Mg CCE/1000 Mg; S<2.6%), and; iv) Chattanooga shale and Quantico slate (PPA<99 Mg CCE/1000 Mg; S<3.9%). After 1990, external loads of Central European rivers with inorganic nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and organic material were reduced because of changed environmental laws. However, in the eutrophic lowland River Warnow, North-Eastern Germany, nitrate concentrations remained high with 35–185 μmol l−1 without a significant decrease since 1992. In contrast, phosphate concentrations, varying between 0.3 and 5.2 μmol l−1 during the growth season 2002, decreased significantly over the years. However, its concentrations still exceeded 1 μmol l−1 regularly in the growth seasons. This load led to a substantial accumulation of organic matter additional to high terrestrial inputs. Despite the high organic load, the remineralising bacteria were mainly inactive in River Warnow. Therefore, the composition of the dissolved organic material, especially its bioavailability, were investigated during the growth season 2002 and discussed with other potential controlling factors. River Warnow carried a high load of dissolved organic carbon (14 mg l−1), especially of humic substances (5.5 mg C l−1). Bacterial abundance (12×106 ml−1) as well as production (1.7 μg C l−1 h−1) depended on temperature. During late spring and summer at constantly higher temperatures, bacterial production correlated positively to readily utilisable substrates and to humic compounds. Thus, the bacterial community in River Warnow may be well adapted or contain enough species using the available amino acids and carbohydrates as well as humic matter compounds. This paper describes a geostatistical technique based on conditional simulations to assess confidence intervals of local
estimates of lake pH values on the Canadian Shield. This geostatistical approach has been developed to deal with the estimation
of phenomena with a spatial autocorrelation structure among observations. It uses the autocorrelation structure to derive
minimum-variance unbiased estimates for points that have not been measured, or to estimate average values for new surfaces.
A survey for lake water chemistry has been conducted by the Ministère de l'Environnement du Québec between 1986 and 1990, to assess surface water quality and delineate the areas affected by acid precipitation on the southern
Canadian Shield in Québec. The spatial structure of lake pH was modeled using two nested spherical variogram models, with
ranges of 20 km and 250 km, accounting respectively for 20% and 55% of the spatial variation, plus a random component accounting
for 25%. The pH data have been used to construct a number of geostatistical simulations that produce plausible realizations
of a given random function model, while 'honoring' the experimental values (i.e., the real data points are among the simulated
data), and that correspond to the same underlying variogram model. Post-processing of a large number of these simulations,
that are equally likely to occur, enables the estimation of mean pH values, the proportion of affected lakes (lakes with pH≤5.5),
and the potential error of these parameters within small regions (100 km×100 km). The method provides a procedure to establish
whether acid rain control programs will succeed in reducing acidity in surface waters, allowing one to consider small areas
with particular physiographic features rather than large drainage basins with several sources of heterogeneity. This judgment
on the reduction of surface water acidity will be possible only if the amount of uncertainty in the estimation of mean pH
is properly quantified.

Under controlled laboratory conditions, artificial rain leaches solute from snow columns, and gives rise to leachate with a composition similar to snowmelt, in addition to the solute initially present in the artificial rain. the initial concentration of ions in the leachate, normalized to the concentration of ions found in the original snow and corrected for the solute present in the artificial rain, is similar to those reported in other laboratory and field studies of snowmelt composition, but there is some evidence that the concentration of leached ions declines more rapidly than during snowmelt. Similarly, as in snowmelt studies, not all ions are leached with the same efficiency. Bearing in mind the confounding influences of snow crystal morphology and snow column hydrology, it seems likely that rain will leach solute from snowpack during rain-on-snow events, in a manner similar to leaching by snowmelt, and that the precise composition of the leachate will depend on the hydrological routing of rain-meltwater mixtures through the snowpack. 相似文献
