The BABEL marine seismic experiment has been carried out to investigate the lithospheric structure and antecedent tectonic signatures of the Baltic Shield, including the Archaean-Proterozoic collisional structure in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia.
Lithospheric seismic-reflection streamer data and simultaneously recorded wide-angle reflection and refraction data collected in the Gulf of Bothnia as part of the BABEL project have been used for 3-D modelling. The distribution of land stations around the Gulf provides a good 3-D ray coverage of the PMP reflection data recorded at the eight stations in the area and allows an estimation of strikes and dips of the Moho boundary in the area. The traveltimes of reflected phases are calculated using a method that utilizes the finite-difference solution of the eikonal equation. The Moho wide-angle-reflection (PMP) traveltimes are modelled using an inversion method. A 2-D model from the Gulf of Bothnia extended into the third dimension is used as an initial model. During the inversion the velocity is kept constant and only the Moho boundary is allowed to vary. To estimate the strike of the Moho boundary and the stability of the inversion, two initial models with different strikes are examined.
The results indicate that the Moho depth in the Gulf of Bothnia undulates and has a maximum depth of 55 km in the south, rising to 42 km in the north. The Moho depth variations seem to be step-like. This change in the Moho depth coincides with the location of the presumed fossil subduction zone in the area. The crustal-thickness variations seem to be well approximated by a nearly 2-D structure striking parallel to a postulated subduction zone immediately to the south of the Skellefte area. The presence of the step at the crust/mantle boundary can be interpreted as a result of a plate-collision event at about 2 Ga. 相似文献

We evaluated the quality of seismic phase data from Indian seismological stations through the analysis of teleseismic travel
times reported during 1976–83 and infer that only WWSSN stations (NDI, SHL, POO, KOD) apart from GBA and HYB can be rated
satisfactory while the majority of stations (more than 40) produce very poor quality data sets. Detailed analysis of teleseismic
P-wave travel time residuals shows that while the average structure of the upper mantle beneath India has high velocity (negative
residuals) there are marked lateral variations. In particular, three zones of anomalous positive residuals (low velocity)
are observed: one beneath the north western part of the Deccan trap, the second covering the southernmost peninsula (granulite
terrain) and a third rather localized one, to the north of Delhi coinciding with Delhi-Haridwar ridge. New Delhi exhibits
strong negative residuals in the E-SE quadrant along with negative station anomaly, implying that it is underlain by an anomalous
high velocity crust/upper mantle. The negative residuals observed over India, continue beneath the Himalaya till the south

An important component of science-based fisheries policy is the provision of habitat adequate for population renewal. In Canada, the Fisheries Act pays little attention to managing fish habitat, and was further weakened by changes enacted in 2012. Specifically, determining the role of fish habitat in contributing to fisheries and fish stock recovery is challenging when many stocks have severely declined and no longer occupy former habitats. This study compared the abundance of juvenile fish in coastal vegetated habitats before and after collapse or decline of groundfish stocks in Atlantic Canada. This comparison was done by compiling past studies that surveyed juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and pollock (Pollachius virens) in vegetated habitats across three provinces. Two studies were repeated, and one that already had post-collapse data was analyzed to quantify long-term changes in juvenile abundance. In all three cases substantial reduction in juvenile abundance coincided with declines in adult stocks. However, juvenile fish still occur in coastal habitats and could aid in adult stock recovery. The current version of the Canadian Fisheries Act requires presence of an ongoing fishery to trigger habitat protection. This is problematic as low fish abundance may lead to lowered habitat protection and potentially habitat degradation, with less or lesser-quality habitat for fish in the future. Thus, recommendations are made to repeal the 2012 Fisheries Act changes and enhance current fish habitat legislation. Using a precautionary approach for coastal fish habitat management, particularly in valuing its potential for fish stock recovery, would strengthen Canadian fisheries management. 相似文献

During the First World War, ancient siege techniques were used in an attempt to break through the stalemate in the trenches. This paper approaches the mine crater war from a completely new perspective and focuses on a landscape-scale approach rather than on fragmented individual sites. Thousands of contemporary aerial photographs have been used as a primary source of information to detect and understand the historical mine crater landscape along the former Western Front in Belgium. Water depth variations in marine reflection seismic profiling cause velocity push-down and, in regions of rapid fluctuations of the water-bottom slope, stack degradation. Static corrections are a very satisfactory and practical solution to these problems under typical survey conditions with water depths not exceeding a few hundred metres and relatively hard water bottoms. Static time shifts are best derived from a refraction analysis of first arrivals rather than from fathometer data, especially over underwater valleys where unconsolidated sediment of velocity close to that of water has been deposited unconformably onto the underlying lithified rocks. These points are illustrated by a field example from the GLIMPCE survey in Lake Superior.
