In this study, we test the adequacy of 2-D sensitivity kernels for fundamental-mode Rayleigh waves based on the single-scattering (Born) approximation to account for the effects of heterogeneous structure on the wavefield in a regional surface wave study. The calculated phase and amplitude data using the 2-D sensitivity kernels are compared to phase and amplitude data obtained from seismic waveforms synthesized by the pseudo-spectral method for plane Rayleigh waves propagating through heterogeneous structure. We find that the kernels can accurately predict the perturbation of the wavefield even when the size of anomaly is larger than one wavelength. The only exception is a systematic bias in the amplitude within the anomaly itself due to a site response.
An inversion method of surface wave tomography based on the sensitivity kernels is developed and applied to synthesized data obtained from a numerical simulation modelling Rayleigh wave propagation over checkerboard structure. By comparing recovered images to input structure, we illustrate that the method can almost completely recover anomalies within an array of stations when the size of the anomalies is larger than or close to one wavelength of the surface waves. The frequency-domain version of waveform tomography enables the use of distinct frequency components to adequately reconstruct the subsurface velocity field, and thereby dramatically reduces the input data quantity required for the inversion process. It makes waveform tomography a computationally tractable problem for production uses, but its applicability to real seismic data particularly in the petroleum exploration and development scale needs to be examined. As real data are often band limited with missing low frequencies, a good starting model is necessary for waveform tomography, to fill in the gap of low frequencies before the inversion of available frequencies. In the inversion stage, a group of frequencies should be used simultaneously at each iteration, to suppress the effect of data noise in the frequency domain. Meanwhile, a smoothness constraint on the model must be used in the inversion, to cope the effect of data noise, the effect of non-linearity of the problem, and the effect of strong sensitivities of short wavelength model variations. In this paper we use frequency-domain waveform tomography to provide quantitative velocity images of a crosshole target between boreholes 300 m apart. Due to the complexity of the local geology the velocity variations were extreme (between 3000 and 5500 m s−1 ), making the inversion problem highly non-linear. Nevertheless, the waveform tomography results correlate well with borehole logs, and provide realistic geological information that can be tracked between the boreholes with confidence. 相似文献

The complexity feature of crust-mantle boundary in Zhangbei seismic region and its tectonic implication 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ProP waveform data obtained from a deep seismic sounding profile, which ran through Zhangbei seismic region, were processed by means of both seismic wave complexity coefficient and frequency spectrum analysis methods, and the complexity characteristics of crest-mantle boundary beneath the studied area and its adjacent region were determined. The results show that the place below epicenter can be taken as boundary, the northern side of which is Inner Mongolia axis with small complexity coefficient and the southern side of which is Huai'an basin with large complexity coefficient. The different spectrum patterns at the two sides of the epicenter were inferred from spectrum analysis. In the epicentral area, there have been multi-period magmatic eruptions since Meso-Cenozoic and craters exist at the surface. From the velocity imaging of middle and upper crust in Zhangbei seismic region it can be found that there are crustal low velocity bodies around the craters and also there are low velocity zones, which went into deep crust. It is suggested that the distinct zones of crust-mantle boundary complexity may be the margin, where the magma had intruded due to magma activity in Meso-Cenozoic. The southern side with large complexity coefficient is deep magmatic activity area and the northern side with small complexity coefficient is stable crust-mantle tectonics. The difference of crust-mantle complexity provides deep background for the development of strong earthquake. 相似文献

The Quaternary aquifer of Wadi Ham, UAE has been overexploited during the last two decades to meet the increasing water demands.
As a result, the dynamic balance between freshwater and seawater has been disturbed and the quality of the groundwater has
deteriorated. In this paper, a 2D earth resistivity survey was conducted in Wadi Ham in the area between Fujairah and Kalba
to delineate the seawater intrusion. Existing monitoring wells were used to measure the horizontal and vertical variations
in water salinity and thus to improve the interpretation of earth resistivity imaging data. Results of vertical electrical
soundings and chemical analyses of collected water samples were used to obtain an empirical relationship between the inferred
earth resistivity and the amount of total dissolved solids. This relationship was used along with the true resistivity sections
resulting from the inversion of 2D resistivity data to identify three zones of water-bearing formation (fresh, brackish, and
salt-water zones). Along the four 2D resistivity profiles, the depth to the fresh-brackish interface exceeded 50 m at the
western part of the area and was in the order of 10 m or less in the eastern side near the shoreline. Depth to the brackish-saline
water interface reached about 70 m in the western side and was in the order of 20 m in the eastern side. The thickness of
the fresh water zone decreases considerably in the farming areas toward Kalba and thus the degree of seawater intrusion increases. 相似文献

The main aim of the TOR project is to study the lithospheric–asthenospheric boundary structure under the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone, across northern Germany, Denmark and southern Sweden. Relative arrival-time residuals of teleseismic P and S phases from 51 earthquakes, recorded by 150 seismic stations along the TOR array, were used to delineate the transition zone in the studied area. The effects of crustal structures were investigated by correcting the teleseismic residuals for travel-time variations in the crust based on a 3D crustal model derived from other data. The inversion was carried out for S phases. The results were then compared with the corresponding P-wave models. As expected, the derived models show that the relatively old and cold Baltic Shield has higher velocity at depth than the younger lithosphere farther South. The models show two sharp and distinct increases in depth to velocities which are low compared to our reference model, as we move from South to North. The location and sharpness of these boundaries suggests that the features resolved are, at least partially, compositional in origin, presumably related to mantle depletion. A sharp and steep subcrustal boundary is found roughly coincident with the southern edge of Sweden. This is below where the edge of the Baltic Shield is usually placed, based on surface geological evidence (the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone). Another less significant transition is recognised more or less beneath the Elbe-lineament. Relatively high d(Vp / Vs) ratios under the central part of the profile (Denmark) indicate relatively low S-velocity in an area where a gravity high supports the hypothesis of extensive mafic intrusions. 相似文献
