The feasibility of using neural networks to model the complex relationship between soil parameters, loading conditions, and
the collapse potential is investigated in this paper. A back propagation neural network process was used in this study. The
neural network was trained using experimental data. The experimental program involved the assessment of the collapse potential
using the one-dimensional oedometer apparatus. To cover the broadest possible scope of data, a total of eight types of soils
were selected covering a wide range of gradation. Various conditions of water content, unit weights and applied pressures
were imposed on the soils. For each placement condition, three samples were prepared and tested with the measured collapse
potential values averaged to obtain a representative data point. This resulted in 414 collapse tests with 138 average test
values, which were divided into two groups. Group I, consisting of 82 data points, was used to train the neural networks for
a specific paradigm. Training was carried out until the mean sum squared error (MSSE) was minimized. The model consisting
of eight hidden nodes and six variables was the most successful. These variables were: soil coefficient of uniformity, initial
water content, compaction unit weight, applied pressure at wetting, percent sand and percent clay. Once the neural networks
have been deemed fully trained its accuracy in predicting collapse potential was tested using group II of the experimental
data. The model was further validated using information available in the literature. The data used in both the testing and
validation phases were not included in the training phase. The results proved that neural networks are very efficient in assessing
the complex behavior of collapsible soils using minimal processing of data.

The extent of damage and affected areas in Bhuj earthquake (26th January 2001) has provided a unique opportunity to evaluate
a wide range of geotechnical issues. A large area in the Rann of Kutch experienced massive liquefaction resulting in ground
subsidence and lateral flow. A large number of dams in the Kutch district suffered moderate to severe damages. Many buildings
were damaged and collapsed in the city of Ahmedabad situated on the bank of the Sabarmati River. In this paper, the ground
response studies at a site in Ahmedabad City along with observations of geotechnical aspects such as ground cracking, sand
volcanoes and liquefaction of soils associated with the Bhuj earthquake are discussed. The ground response studies indicate
that the varying degree of damage to multistorey buildings in Ahmedabad in the close proximity of Sabarmati river area was
essentially due to the collapse and undesirable settlement of partly saturated silty sand deposits. Large settlements are
attributed to amplification of the ground and the near resonance condition.

Stratigraphic analysis of alluvial/colluvial sequences and 14C dating have been used as proxies for Holocene climate changes in the highlands of Tigray (northern Ethiopia). The studied records show alternations of buried soils and peaty–clayey sediments, pointing to wet, stabilization phases, and organic-free colluvium layers resulting from the abrupt occurrence of dry-climate episodes. The 14C dates, mostly unpublished, cluster in the 11,090–9915, 9465–9135, 8450–7330, 6720–3635, 2710–2345, and 1265–790 cal yr B.P. time spans. Evidence of subsequent pedogenesis is lacking in the area, apart from a buried humified horizon dated at 300 ± 60 14C yr B.P. (460–295 cal yr B.P.). Both the timing and the pattern of Tigray paleoclimatic events fit the corresponding framework, based on lake level changes, previously implemented for the Main Rift Valley. These findings give further support for arguing that the forcing mechanisms of the wet/dry fluctuations during the Holocene were effective over a large scale. 相似文献

A number of large slope failures which have occurred in Hong Kong have highlighted the important influence that discontinuities in saprolitic soils can have on slope stability. Conventional stability analyses normally adopted for such soils, which assume failure through intact materials of uniform shear strength, are not appropriate if discontinuity-controlled failures can be postulated. One-way floodgates installed on flood mitigation drains in regions affected by acid sulphate soils restrict carbonate/bicarbonate buffering, thereby creating reservoirs of acid water (pH < 4.5) that discharge during the ebb tide. The drain water quality and hydrodynamic conditions prior to and following floodgate modifications that allowed for controlled saline intrusion are described with reference to data collected from intensively drained and floodgated coastal lowlands located in southeastern New South Wales, Australia. Cl:SO4 ratios taken from groundwater samples depicted an acidic environment with little soil buffering capacity. Prior to modification, water quality upstream of the one-way floodgate was consistently acidic (average pH 4.6) with high concentrations of aluminum and iron that fluctuated with precipitation. Over a two-week period before modifications, floodgate leakage permitted alkaline water to intrude upstream of the floodgate and react with H+ ions. This period showed the strongest supporting field evidence for tidal buffering via modified floodgates. After installing vertical lifting, two-way floodgates average drain water pH increased to 5.89 and aluminum and iron concentrations decreased by more than 30%. A large rainfall (131.8 mm) during the post-modification period caused acidic groundwater flushing, however, in comparison to the pre-modification period, recovery time and average pH were markedly improved. Preliminary investigations of groundwater salinity in response to tidal intrusion has shown that electrical conductivity fluctuates with rainfall and it is predominately limited to 10 m perpendicular to the drain. 相似文献

This paper examines the soil-water behaviour of sandy soils representative of a broad area in the Duero river basin (Spain), with semi-arid bioclimatic characteristics. Soil-moisture measurements of the first 25 cm of soil profile were taken using time domain reflectometry (TDR) methodology. The infiltration process was studied by means of field experiments combining rainfall simulations and TDR techniques. Finally, a set of hydrodynamic variables was calculated in the laboratory (i.e. available soil-water content, soil-water-retention curves and hydraulic conductivity).The average available soil-water content is 0·07 cm3 cm−3, in accordance with the predominance of the sandy textural fraction (85%). The rainfall simulation experiments show that infiltration prevails over overland flow, with a steady-state infiltration rate higher than rainfall application (40mmh−1) in most cases; a low water-retention capacity was also observed. The evolution of soil-moisture over time indicates a close dependence on intra-annual rainfall variability due to the low water-retention capacity of sandy soils. With a maximum water-storage capacity of around 0·18 cm3 cm−3, the soils studied show high sensitivity to dry spells and may remain with <50% of the available soil-water content for several months during the year. 相似文献

Floodplain soil-paleosol successions are valuable archives for reconstructing Pleistocene-Holocene climate changes but have been relatively unstudied in the southern Appalachian region. Two soil profiles on a small floodplain in southeastern Tennessee, USA were described and sampled in detail using both pedological and geological approaches, including stable carbon isotope analysis of soil organic matter (SOM). Correlation between the 2 profiles was constrained by uncalibrated AMS 14C ages of bulk humates, and using SOM δ13C values, both mobile and immobile elements. Four distinct 2.5-4‰ shifts towards less negative δ13C values for SOM suggest ∼ 300-yr cyclicity and transient warmer and drier climate events, with either water-stressed C3 vegetation or as much as 35% C4 plants present during the mid-Holocene. These postulated multi-episodic drier climate conditions have never before been documented in the southern Appalachian region and are tentatively correlated with mid-Holocene warming and drying in the eastern US, the nearly time-equivalent mid-Holocene events documented in Texas, the US High Plains and in the Gulf of Mexico. High rates of floodplain sediment accumulation (0.5-3 mm/yr), high clay content and maintenance of poorly drained soil conditions favor preservation of high-resolution climate archives in floodplain deposits by inhibiting oxidation and translocation of organic C. 相似文献

The studies presented explore post-depositional changes of zinc, cadmium, lead, manganese and 137Cs distribution in alluvial sediments accumulated in the upper Odra River valley in southern Poland. The rate of these changes
was estimated by comparing metal and 137Cs distributions in four vertical alluvial profiles with a history of river pollution and sediment deposition. The untypical
137Cs distribution with peaks in the surface 40–60 cm and lower down, even at a depth of 2.5 m in strata deposited before the
beginning of nuclear tests in 1954, indicates rapid post-depositional migration of this isotope from the surface and its retention
in lower, less permeable layers. Moreover, the highest concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium were found at a depth of 4 m
in sediments accumulated in the mid-nineteenth century in spite of the growth of industrialization and the pollution of the
Odra River with heavy metals until the end of the twentieth century. The post-depositional changes in heavy metals and 137Cs are rapid in comparison with the slow element migration usually observed in uninundated soils. This difference is explained
by the frequent and easy infiltration of polluted river water into the gravelly and sandy sediments present in the profiles. 相似文献
