Simple model calculations show that the reversible temperature effects reported for broad OH-stretching bands in infrared
spectra of silica, aluminosilicate, and similar glasses can be explained, in essentials, by homogeneous thermal broadening
of the ν(OH) envelope constituents and a decrease in intensity with increasing temperature taking place uniformly across the
band. This means that these effects are reasonably consistent with the temperature behaviour of narrow ν(OH) bands of crystalline
OH-bearing minerals. These findings leave little room for the previously agreed interpretation in terms of a change in hydrogen-bonding
strength, although the dependence of integrated intensity on temperature still remains to be understood.

The goal of cathodic protection is to prevent corrosion by maintaining buried pipelines at a constant potential with respect to the surrounding soil. In practice, however, the implementation is very complicated since many factors can contribute to the current flowing off the pipe. Design requires characterization of the parameters impacting the corrosion process, such as soil resistivity, size of the pipe and quality of the coating.In the present paper, we have studied the effect of geomagnetic fields on the pipe-induced currents considering it as an additional cause of corrosion. A theoretical method implemented to model the induced currents was tested in a previous work and the effect during disturbed days was quantified. This theoretical model indicated that the intensity of the current induced in a pipeline by the varying geomagnetic field depends on the intensity and rate of change of the field and the electrical resistivity of the soil. This induced current is in equilibrium with the host current and there is no current drainage between the pipeline and the host until, along the length of the pipeline, the host resistivity becomes different. At that point, current must flow between the pipe and host in order to establish a new equilibrium. It is this drainage current, flowing between the pipeline and the host, which causes corrosion problems.Following these results, experimental tests were performed in Tierra del Fuego. In this zone, a geophysical study was made to determine the discontinuities in soil resistivities and simultaneous measurements of the geomagnetic field and the drainage of current were recorded at different sites. During the two mainshocks of September 26, 1997 inthe Umbria-Marche border a strong-motion accelerographrecorded peak ground accelerations as large as 0.6 g,approximately, in the town of Nocera Umbra, atdistances of 10 to 15 km from the epicentres. Thisvalue is significantly larger than expected on thebasis of the usual regressions with magnitude anddistance. A broad-band amplification up to a factor of10 was consistently estimated in previous papers,using both weak and strong motion data recorded at theaccelerograph site during local moderate earthquakes.To study the cause of this amplification we deployedsix seismologic stations across the tectonic contactbetween the Ceno-Mesozoic limestone and the Mesozoicmarly sandstone where the accelerograph is installed.Seismograms of 21 shallow aftershocks in the magnituderange from 2.2 to 4.0 and a subcrustal Mw = 5.3event are analysed. Regardless of epicentre location,waveforms show a large complexity in an approximately200 m wide band adjacent to the tectonic contact. A specific subclass of Gauss–Markov models has been defined as containing the models for which the disturbance/response matrix,
determined under the assumption of uncorrelated observations, consists of independent diagonal blocks. A proposed modification
of reliability assessment procedure for such models is presented By the appropriate reduction of a given full covariance matrix
for the observations, the proposal allows the assessment to be made in the resulting model which, in contrast to the initial
model, is free from outlier-hiding effects of the type not occurring in ordinary models. The theoretical findings are demonstrated
using simple numerical examples. All the proofs supporting the proposal are gathered in Appendixes. The proposal, which is
not without its own weak points, is an attempt to associate the reliability assessment in specific Gauss–Markov models with
effective outlier detection.

Three different methods of handling topography in geoid determination were investigated. The first two methods employ the
residual terrain model (RTM) remove–restore technique, yielding the quasigeoid, whereas the third method uses the classical
Helmert condensation method, yielding the geoid. All three methods were used with the geopotential model Earth Gravity Model
(1996) (EGM96) as a reference, and the results were compared to precise global positioning system (GPS) levelling networks
in Scandinavia. An investigation of the Helmert method, focusing on the different types of indirect effects and their effects
on the geoid, was also carried out. The three different methods used produce almost identical results at the 5-cm level, when
compared to the GPS levelling networks. However, small systematic differences existed.
