Cross-sections of 16 straight sandbed streams in Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska were surveyed. Two stratigraphic horizons were found in the banks at each site, an upper cohesive unit usually composed of silt and clay and a lower unit composed of sand. Bank erosion on these rivers occurs when the upper cohesive unit is undercut by scour at bends. The overhanging cohesive block fails by beam or cantilever failure. As upper bank failure is a direct result of undercutting, the stability and rate of retreat of the bank are largely determined by erosion of the sandy part of the bank. The cohesive layer has little influence on bank retreat and width adjustment on the rivers studied here. A quantitative lateral sediment transport model developed by Parker (1978a) is used to calculate the steady-state geometry of the sandy part of the bank. Results are obtained for the shape, length, and height of the sandy part of the bank. The model predicts the length of the bank fairly well, and the theoretical equation for the height of the bank is of the correct form. The model, however, overestimates the slope of the bank. The height of the sandy part of the bank (Db) is approximately equal to the depth of the mean annual flow. Since Db is determined by the lateral sediment transport model, the width (W) may be obtained from the equation of continuity (Q = WDbV), published flow (Q) data, and a resistance equation for the mean velocity, V. Three resection–intersection algorithms were applied to simulated projections and clinical data from radiostereometric patients. On simulated data, the more advanced bundle-adjustment-based algorithms outperformed the classical Selvik algorithm, even if the error reductions were small for some parameters. On clinical data, the results were inconclusive.The two different projection geometries had a much larger influence on the error size and distribution. For the biplanar configuration, the position and motion errors were small and almost isotropic. For the uniplanar configuration, the position errors were comparably high and anisotropic, but still resulted in a high accuracy for some motion parameters at the expense of others.The simplified resection–intersection algorithm by Selvik may still be considered a good and robust algorithm for radiostereometry. More studies will have to be performed to find out how the theoretical advantages of the bundle methods can be utilized in clinical radiostereometry. 相似文献

The orientation of straight inclusion trails within albite porphyroblasts from basic schists has been measured around a north-closure fold, in the Besshi district of the Sambagawa Belt, central Shikoku, Japan. The porphyroblasts are aligned with their longest dimension parallel to both the subhorizontal, east–west-directed mineral lineation and to the fold axis. There is a systematic variation in inclusion-trail geometry between the upper (northern) and lower (southern) fold limbs. The shear sense deduced from quartz c-axis fabrics is top-to-the-west in the upper limb and top-to-the-east in the lower limb. Based on observed variations in porphyroblast inclusion trails, the structural history can be modelled as follows: (i) shear flow caused east–west stretching and folding of the metamorphic zonation; (ii) east–west ductile shear resulted in opposing senses of shear in the upper and lower limbs as the eclogite body situated in the core of the fold was extruded to the east. 相似文献

A 17-benchmark geodetic network in the volcanic area of the Teide Caldera, Canary Islands has been utilised several times since 1982 to detect crustal movements associated with volcanic activity within the network, as well as a procedure for solving configuration problems. The network is located on the mid-western side of the Caldera, where there are two different morphological zones that both have benchmarks. The authors performed a sensitivity test of this geodetic network for volcano monitoring purposes. To do so, we use a deformation model to calculate surface displacement caused by a dike intrusion in a homogenous half space. The depth and location of dike are changed to study the variation of the effects produced (displacements). The size and location of the intruded dike are found to play a major role in determining both the displacement pattern and magnitude. When the dike is close to the surface, there is an inversion of the surface displacement pattern and very large surface displacement at certain benchmarks. Such phenomena can serve as precursors of such dike eruptions. Our study show a clear need to extend the existing geodetic network to cover the full island for volcano monitoring purposes. 相似文献

Downward precipitating ions in the cusp regularly exhibit sudden changes in ion energy distributions, forming distinctive structures that can be used to study the temporal/spatial nature of reconnection at the magnetopause. When observed simultaneously with the Polar, FAST, and Interball satellites, such cusp structures revealed remarkably similar features. These similar features could be observed for up to several hours during stable solar wind conditions. Their similarities led to the conclusion that large-scale cusp structures are spatial structures related to global ionospheric convection patterns created by magnetic merging and not the result of temporal variations in reconnection parameters. The launch of the Cluster fleet allows cusp structures to be studied in great detail and during changing solar wind conditions using three spacecraft with identical plasma and field instrumentation. In addition, Cluster cusp measurements are linked with ionospheric convection cells by combining the satellite observations with SuperDARN radar observations that are used to derive the convection patterns in the ionosphere. The combination of satellite observations with ground-based observations during variable solar wind conditions shows that large-scale cusp structures can be either spatial or temporal. Cusp structures can be described as spatial features observed by satellites crossing into spatially separated flux tubes. Cusp structures can also be observed as poleward-traveling (temporal) features within the same convection cell, most probably caused by variations in the reconnection rate at the magnetopause. 相似文献

New insights into Late Pleistocene explosive volcanic activity and caldera formation on Ischia (southern Italy) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
A new pyroclastic stratigraphy is presented for the island of Ischia, Italy, for the period ∼75–50 ka BP. The data indicate
that this period bore witness to the largest eruptions recorded on the island and that it was considerably more volcanically
active than previously thought. Numerous vents were probably active during this period. The deposits of at least 10 explosive
phonolite to basaltic-trachyandesite eruptions are described and interpreted. They record a diverse range of explosive volcanic
activity including voluminous fountain-fed ignimbrite eruptions, fallout from sustained eruption columns, block-and-ash flows,
and phreatomagmatic eruptions. Previously unknown eruptions have been recognised for the first time on the island. Several
of the eruptions produced pyroclastic density currents that covered the whole island as well as the neighbouring island of
Procida and parts of the mainland. The morphology of Ischia was significantly different to that seen today, with edifices
to the south and west and a submerged depression in the centre. The largest volcanic event, the Monte Epomeo Green Tuff (MEGT)
resulted in caldera collapse across all or part of the island. It is shown to comprise at least two thick intracaldera ignimbrite
flow-units, separated by volcaniclastic sediments that were deposited during a pause in the eruption. Extracaldera deposits
of the MEGT include a pumice fall deposit emplaced during the opening phases of the eruption, a widespread lithic lag breccia
outcropping across much of Ischia and Procida, and a distal ignimbrite in south-west Campi Flegrei. During this period the
style and magnitude of volcanism was dictated by the dynamics of a large differentiated magma chamber, which was partially
destroyed during the MEGT eruption. This contrasts with the small-volume Holocene and historical effusive and explosive activity
on Ischia, the timing and distribution of which has been controlled by the resurgence of the Monte Epomeo block. The new data
contribute to a clearer understanding of the long-term volcanic and magmatic evolution of Ischia. 相似文献
