The European Union (EU) has adopted directives requiring that Member States take measures to reach a “good” chemical status of water resources by the year 2015 (Water Framework Directive: WFD). In order to achieve the environmental objectives for groundwater, the identification and reversal of significant upward trends in pollutant concentrations are required. A very detailed dataset available for the Hesbaye chalk aquifer in Belgium is used to evaluate tools and to propose efficient methodologies for identifying and quantifying nitrate trends in groundwater. Results indicate that the parametric linear regression and the non-parametric Mann-Kendall tests are robust; however, the latter test seems more adequate as it does not require verification of the normality of the dataset and it provides calculated nitrate trends very comparable to those obtained using linear regression. From a hydrogeological point of view, results highlight a general upward trend in the whole groundwater basin. The extrapolation of the trend analysis results indicates that measures have to be taken urgently in order to avoid further major degradation of groundwater quality within the next 10–70 years. However, a good groundwater quality status cannot be expected in the Hesbaye aquifer for the 2015 EU WFD deadline.  相似文献

Isolated cranial and post-cranial remains of hadrosaurid dinosaurs have been collected from various outcrops in the type area of the Maastrichtian stage during the last few years. In the present contribution, dentary and maxillary teeth are recorded from the area for the first time. Post-cranial elements comprise a newly collected, fragmentary, large right metatarsal III and a broken ?right humerus, recently recognised in the collections of Teylers Museum (Haarlem). Unfortunately, none of these remains can be identified to species level. The available material suggests, however, that more than one taxon of non-lambeosaurine hadrosaurid and a possible euhadrosaurian are represented. Most of the new finds are stratigraphically well documented, which means that they may be linked to the recently published sequence-stratigraphic interpretation of the type Maastrichtian. Dinosaur remains recorded previously from the Maastrichtian type area are tabulated.

A new study of the stratigraphy and composition of the Rocourt Tephra is performed at five sites in Belgium and brackets the age of the tephra between 90.3 and 74 ka. The volcanic glass grains have a typical shape of phreatomagmatic eruption products. A large set of tephra minerals were analyzed, namely clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, amphibole, and Cr-spinel. The compositions of these minerals have been compared with the lava xenocrysts, megacrysts, and phenocrysts of the proximate Eifel volcanic province for which the origin has been determined (mantle xenoliths, high-pressure cumulates, and middle- to low-pressure magmatic phases). This allowed us to determine the likely origin of the tephra minerals. The Rocourt Tephra source could be a West Eifel volcano that was fed by a deep-seated magma batch rich in high- to middle-pressure minerals.  相似文献

Levels of spatial segregation in Western European cities are persistent over space and time. To demonstrate the degree or appearance of spatial segregation, most studies on urban residential patterns still rely on fixed spatial units, aspatial measures and single scales. However, a spatial or temporal comparison of patterns and levels of segregation based on such units or metrics is not without problems. To that end, this paper takes an explicit geographic approach and considers individualized neighborhoods using EquiPop-software, allowing various scales. Using the k-nearest neighbors for all individuals increases international comparability and facilitates interpretation, so far often hampered in segregation research. This multiscalar, multigroup comparative approach on ethnic urban geographies – using Belgium as a case study – provides an empirical illustration of a valuable method and tool applicable in segregation research, thereby furthering the comprehension of the increasingly diverse urban geographies and building on emerging work in the US, Europe and beyond.  相似文献

A hydrological conceptual model developed by the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium has been run to assess the potential hydrological impacts of an hypothetical doubling of the atmospheric CO2 concentration. The simulated scenarios were derived from the predictions of climatic change currently provided by General Circulation Models (GCMs). Three typical drainage basins in Belgium have been selected for assessing their common responses and bringing out possible specific behaviours attributable to catchment characteristics. The study dealt essentially with modifications of the streamflow and with alterations of the flood and low-flow regimes. In catchments with prevailing surface flow the considered change in climate could induce:
  • An increase in flood frequencies during the winter season together with a strengthening of the extreme river stages leading to greater flooding risks;
  • A decrease in streamflow during the summer season and, as a corollary, increased risks of water pollution;
  • Possible restraints, in summer and autumn, on water availability from local groundwater storages.
In catchments with high infiltration rate and with strong aquifer the impact could be:
  • An increase in groundwater storage, bringing about an increase in the base flow throughout the year, which in turn involves increased flood risks;
  • A reduction of the number of low-stage occurrences in summer, resulting in reduced river pollution;
  • A possible increase in water availability from the aquifers.

The inland dune “Molenberg” (Lys valley, NW Belgium) is an exceptionally well-preserved dune of more than 10 m high. To determine the phases of dune formation and identify possible levels for human occupation, this dune was sampled at closely spaced vertical intervals for Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating (every 50 cm) and grain-size analysis (intervals of 10–25 cm) over its entire depth, including the top of the underlying sediments. The resulting ages show dune formation during the late glacial period (GI-1 and GS-1), with a probable extensive deposition during the Allerød (GI-1a-c) and Younger Dryas (GS-1). Interestingly, the OSL dataset for the main body of the dune shows significant cyclical age inversions that may be caused by reworking of sediment causing incomplete bleaching of sand grains. This may further indicate the potential of high-sampling resolution OSL to contribute to the reconstruction of complex dune dynamics.  相似文献

In Belgium, centralized reporting on landings of sea fisheries at the species level started in 1929. This paper summarizes the process and the results of integrating time-series, based on fragmented and disperse data sources for the period 1929–1999. The resulting database contains data by species (41), by port of landing in Belgium (4) and in ‘foreign ports,’ and by fishing area of origin (31). After quality control, total reported landings over the period 1929–2008 amounted to 3,320,518 tonnes, of which 90% was landed in the Belgian ports. After a maximum of 75,370 tonnes in 1947, annual landings declined steadily to only 26% of this peak by 2008. Currently, landings are below those achieved in 1929. The most important species in terms of landings (1929–1999) were cod (17% of all landings) and herring (16%). In terms of economic value, sole (31%) and cod (15%) were the most valuable. Close to 73% of all landings originated from 5 of the 31 fishing areas. Twenty percent of all landings (1929–1999) originated from the ‘coastal waters’, while these waters contributed nearly 60% of all landed pelagic species and 55% of all landed ‘molluscs and crustaceans’. Compared to the currently available ICES data, this local database offers advantages in temporal coverage (data from 1929 onwards), temporal scale (monthly values), and at the taxonomic level. It also provides more detailed information at the spatial scale of the southern and central North Sea, and it is the only source of historical information on landings originating from the coastal waters. Given the importance of the shallow and productive ‘Flemish banks’ as a local source of food in historical and recent times, this data is valuable for further research on the productivity of the coastal ecosystem and the local impact of fisheries. The database broadens the historical view on fisheries, underlines the decline in landings since reporting started, and serves as a basis for further (fisheries) research and policy-making in Belgium.  相似文献

The biostratigraphy and sedimentology of the late Tournaisian, Waulsortian buildups of the type area, at Waulsort (Belgium), are examined in detail. Four buildups are present. Overall, they span the stratigraphic interval from the base of the Ivorian stage to the lower part of the Moliniacian stage, ending just below the base of the Viséan. Petrographic study shows that all Waulsortian Phases are represented, the older buildups being of Phases A and B, whereas the youngest ranges through Phases A to D. The relatively crude Phase classification is refined by correspondence analysis, which shows that the grain types present in the Waulsortian and associated limestones conform closely to the relay (systematic shift of relative importance of grain types) described from other Waulsortian buildups in Belgium. A Relay Index, derived from the correspondence analysis and defining the position of each sample in the compositional relay, is plotted on stratigraphic logs of the sections studied to allow detailed comparison with other Waulsortian and peri-Waulsortian sections in the Dinant area for which similar curves already exist. The Waulsort buildups are found to fit closely into the depositional and palaeobathymetric patterns established or suspected in the area. Two shallowing upward sequences seem to be present, separated by an abrupt deepening. The earlier, relatively minor shallowing trend, in the Polygnathus communis carina Zone, is here recorded in buildup facies for the first time: previous evidence had come from the laterally equivalent facies. The other shallowing trend, which extends through the Scaliognathus anchoralis Zone and culminates near the base of the Moliniacian stage, is the regional, late Tournaisian regression which had a major influence on the biota of the Waulsortian banks in Belgium and was probably largely responsible for cessation of bank growth over most of the area.  相似文献

Throughout the world, tidal marshes are being restored to obtain natural protection against recurring storm surges and sea level rise and to preserve the resources these habitats provide. Managed realignment, or breaching of the seaward dikes, is a restoration technique increasingly used; yet unsuitable site elevation has been a major constraint to habitat development. Controlled reduced tide (CRT), a new technique to implement tidal regime on low elevated sites, could offer solutions for several problems associated with reconstruction or mitigation of tidal marshes.  相似文献
