Located in the southeastern parts of the BaouléMossi domain of the West African Craton,the Birimian terrane in Ghana is known to consist of predominantly juvenile crust emplaced during the Eburnean orogeny.Here we present novel coupled zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope data from nine Birimian granitoids intruding different domains from northwestern,western and southeastern Ghana.Sub-chondriticε_(Hf)-values indicating reworking of Archaean crust are recorded in zircon from both northwestern and southeastern Ghana.As a conservative estimate 71%of all analysed zircon grains spanning in age from2220 Ma to 2130 Ma require contribution from a reworked Archaean source,contradicting the common belief that the Birimian terrane consist of predominantly juvenile crust.A minimumε_(Hf)-value of-10.5 at2139 Ma suggests a Palaeoarchaean to late Mseoarchaean component as the contributing ancient source.Combined with previously reported heavy zirconδ~(18)O signatures from Birimian river zircon in Ghana,our new data suggests reworking of Archaean aged sediments during subduction initiated crustal growth in the vicinity of one,or possibly in between two Archaean aged cratons.  相似文献

[2003] Geology, 31, 283-286). Due to incomplete preservation these impacts represent a minimum rate of the Archaean impact flux. High UV radiation associated with low ozone levels in the Archaean atmosphere may have been further enhanced by large impacts, accentuating MIF-S anomalies. The appearance of iron-rich sediments above late and mid-Archaean impact ejecta units (Glikson, A.Y. [2006] Earth Planet. Sci. Lett., 246, 149-160; Glikson, A.Y., Vickers, J. [2007] Earth Planet. Sci. Lett., 254, 214-226) may be related either to microbial oxidation of ferrous iron or, alternatively, photochemical oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron. Given post-2.45 Ga diluting of possible MIF-S anomalies by the oxygenating ocean sulfate reservoir (Pavlov, A.A., Kasting, J.F. Anorthosite-bearing layered intrusions are unique to the Archaean rock record and are abundant in the Archaean craton of southern West Greenland and the Superior Province of Canada. These layered intrusions consist mainly of ultramafic rocks, gabbros, leucogabbros and anorthosites, and typically contain high-Ca (>An70) megacrystic (2–30 cm in diameter) plagioclase in anorthosite and leucogabbro units. They are spatially and temporally associated with basalt-dominated greenstone belts and are intruded by syn-to post-tectonic granitoid rocks. The layered intrusions, greenstone belts and granitoids all share the geochemical characteristics of Phanerozoic subduction zone magmas, suggesting that they formed mainly in a suprasubduction zone setting. Archaean anorthosite-bearing layered intrusions and spatially associated greenstone belts are interpreted to be fragments of oceanic crust, representing dismembered subduction-related ophiolites. We suggest that large degrees of partial melting (25–35%) in the hotter (1500–1600 °C) Archaean upper mantle beneath rifting arcs and backarc basins produced shallow, kilometre-scale hydrous magma chambers. Field observations suggest that megacrystic anorthosites were generated at the top of the magma chambers, or in sills, dykes and pods in the oceanic crust. The absence of high-Ca megacrystic anorthosites in post-Archaean layered intrusions and oceanic crust reflects the decline of mantle temperatures resulting from secular cooling of the Earth.  相似文献

The Yinshan Block, part of the Neoarchaean basement of the Western Block of the North China Craton, is composed of granite–greenstone and granulite–charnockite complexes. We report research on a suite of charnockites from the granulite–charnockite complex and characterize their geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and Hf isotopic composition. The charnockites can be divided into intermediate (SiO2 = 59–63 wt.%) and silicic (SiO2 = 69–71 wt.%) groups. U–Pb zircon data yield protolith formation ages of 2524 ± 4 Ma, 2533 ± 15 Ma, followed by metamorphism at 2498 ± 3 Ma, 2490 ± 11 Ma, respectively, for these groups. Although the intermediate charnockites are characterized by higher Al2O3, TiO2, Fe2O3T, MnO, MgO, CaO, P2O5, K2O, Sr, and ΣREE content than the silicic charnockites, the ages and Hf isotopic composition of zircons and REE patterns of both intermediate and silicic charnockites are remarkably consistent, which indicates that they are genetically related. These charnockites are predominantly metaluminous to slightly peraluminous, calc-alkalic to calcic, and magnesian – characteristics generally related to a subduction setting. High-Sr + Ba granites with low K2O/Na2O characteristics, shown by these charnockites, imply a mixture of mafic and felsic magmas generated from an enriched mantle + lower crust. High MgO, Ni, Cr and Mg#, low K2O/Na2O, and metaluminous to slightly peraluminous natures imply that the source rocks most likely were amphibolites. Coeval calc-alkaline magmatism and high-T granulite-facies metamorphism under low-H2O activity in the area lead us to propose a model involving mid-ocean ridge subduction within a Neoarchaean convergent margin. The arc-related rocks accreted along the continent margin, and became a barrier when the lithospheric mantle ascended through the slab window. Melt derived from the decompressing mantle mixed with melt derived from the overlying, juvenile lower crust melt, which was warmed and metamorphosed by the ascending lithospheric mantle.  相似文献

Abstract Grey gneisses are tonalitic intrusive rocks that have Archaean characteristics and tectonic significance. Archaean grey gneisses in North China may be classified into two types: the Zunhua type and the Hengshan type. Grey gneisses of the Zunhua type alternate with basic granulites, forming a bimodal migmatitic suite. The rock is characterized by complex mineral composition, highly varied REE patterns and positive Eu anomaly and originated from autochthonous or partly autochthonous deep - level migmatization with a high degree (30% ±) of fusion. As the sub - stratum in the root of the early - stage high - grade greenstone belt, they prevented basic rocks from sinking. Grey gneisses of the Hengshan type are characterized by a relatively distinct intrusion form, large - amplitude upward emplacement, rather simple mineral composition, only slight changes of REE patterns and absence of Eu anomaly. The rock is a product of subduction and underthrusting of the high - grade greenstone belt and then fusion and emplacement with a low degree (15% ±) of fusion. In this paper an attempt is made to furnish important information about palaeoplate tectonics and early crustal evolution by means of a study of grey gneisses.  相似文献

灰色片麻岩是具太古宙特征而有构造意义的英云间长质侵入体。华北太古苗灰色片麻岩可分为两种类型:其一为遵化型。它与基性麻粒岩呈“互层”产出,形成双峰式混合岩伏建造。矿物成分复杂,稀土型式变化大,有正铕异常,属原地半原地深位混合岩化成因,熔融量大(30%±),作为早期深变质绿岩带根部的板底垫托而阻止了基性岩的沉没。其二为恒山型。有岩体形态和较大幅度的上升侵位,矿物成分简单,稀土型式变化小,常无铕异常,为深变质绿岩带俯冲下插并熔融侵位的产物,熔融量小(15%±)。本文试图通过灰色片麻岩的研究为古板块构造和早期地壳演化提供重要信息。  相似文献

Sedimentation in molasse basins is controlled by tectonics, however, recycling and chemical weathering play a critical role in the compositional evolution of a sedimentary succession. The Cretaceous to Pliocene molasse deposits of Central Otago, New Zealand are excellent examples of tectonically related deposits that were governed by the effects of chemical weathering and recycling. Preserved in fault-controlled basins floored by flysch deposits of the Otago Schist, the clastic successions contain ubiquitous unconformities and lithofacies consistent with alluvial, fluvial and lacustrine depositional settings. Textural analysis of Central Otago sandstones establishes a general quartz enrichment and increased mixing of angular and well-rounded quartz varieties up-section, consistent with a history of sediment recycling. Rare earth element (REE) patterns, which reflect upper crustal compositions, are similar for the flysch-type Otago Schist (Permian–Early Cretaceous), a palaeo-weathering profile, and the overlying molasse deposits. The development of quartz arenites is also consistent with high degrees of chemical weathering, and erosion of the schist basement, which contains numerous quartz veins. Although recycling has occurred, SiO2 and TiO2 do not consistently show a negative correlation over time. This reflects erosion of previously deposited quartz-rich sediment and the Otago weathering profile, which produced an inverse stratigraphy. CIA values range from 52 for lithic-rich, coarse-grained sandstones and polymictic conglomerate matrices, to 93 for coarse-grained to pebble-rich quartz arenites. Individual samples were split into finer- and coarser-grained pairs (<2·5φ and 2·5 to −1φ) and were analysed separately. The results show that finer-grained samples contain higher REE abundances and less SiO2, but the coarser-grained Miocene–Pliocene samples have higher CIA values than their finer-grained counterparts. These coarse-grained deposits are quartz-rich and plot erratically on tectonic discrimination diagrams, implying that using SiO2-poor samples is more reliable for geochemical analysis. Overall, the petrographic and geochemical results indicate that the main factors controlling the composition of the Central Otago molasse deposits were source composition, chemical weathering and recycling. Studies of this nature can be conducted in Archaean tectonically controlled molasse basins that are affected by similar allocyclic factors.  相似文献
