We develop, in this paper, an analytical approach of continuous medium type which improves the theory of Janssen and other existing approaches of the same type. This approach allows to calculate the stresses in any point of the ensiled granular medium and to represent as well qualitatively as quantitatively the stress saturation effect. The problem of accuracy of predictions of pre-failure deformations of granular soils is considered. Firstly, the deterministic incremental equations describing qualitative character of such deformations are presented. These equations are based on extensive experimental data, obtained from the tri-axial compression tests. The parameters appearing in the incremental equations are assumed as random numbers, characterized by their mean values and standard deviations. The normal probability distribution is assumed. Then, such a model is applied to predict strains caused by some simple deterministic stress paths. The incremental equations are integrated for a large number of random coefficients, generated by a computer program. The final results are presented as either paths or points in the strain space, and respective density of probability distribution is calculated. The proposed method and results obtained show, that in mechanics of granular media we cannot expect “a good agreement” between predictions of theoretical models and experimental results, but only a kind of agreement measured by probability. The results presented should be important for both theoretical modellers and experimentalists. 相似文献

Summary Temperature increase in saturated porous materials under undrained conditions leads to thermal pressurization of the pore
fluid due to the discrepancy between the thermal expansion coefficients of the pore fluid and of the solid matrix. This increase
in the pore fluid pressure induces a reduction of the effective mean stress and can lead to shear failure or hydraulic fracturing.
The equations governing the phenomenon of thermal pressurization are presented and this phenomenon is studied experimentally
for a saturated granular rock in an undrained heating test under constant isotropic stress. Careful analysis of the effect
of mechanical and thermal deformations of the drainage and pressure measurement system is performed and a correction of the
measured pore pressure is introduced. The test results are modelled using a non-linear thermo-poro-elastic constitutive model
of the granular rock with emphasis on the stress-dependent character of the rock compressibility. The effects of stress and
temperature on thermal pressurization observed in the test are correctly reproduced by the model.

In order to isolate the effect of grain size and cementation on the mechanical behaviour of poorly consolidated granular rock, we prepared synthetic rock samples in which these two parameters were varied independently. Various proportions of sand, Portland cement and water were mixed and cast in a mold. The mixture was left pressure-free during curing, thus ensuring that the final material was poorly consolidated. We used two natural well-sorted sands with grain sizes of 0.22 and 0.8 mm. The samples were mechanically tested in a uniaxial press. Static Young's modulus was measured during the tests by performing small stress excursions at discrete intervals along the stress–strain curves. All the samples exhibited nonlinear elasticity, i.e., Young's modulus increased with stress. As expected, we found that the uniaxial compressive strength increased with increasing cement content. Furthermore, we observed a transition from grain size sensitivity of strength at cement content less than 20–30% to grain size independence above this value. The measured values of Young's modulus are well explained by models based on rigid inclusions embedded in a soft matrix, at high cement content, and on cemented grain-to-grain contacts, at low cement content. Both models predict grain size independence in well-sorted cemented sands. The observed grain size sensitivity at low cement content is probably due to microstructural differences between fine- and coarse-grained materials caused by small differences in grain sorting quality. 相似文献

Chlorophenols and Nonylphenols in Sewage Sludges. Part I: Occurence in Sewage Sludges of Western German Treatment Plants from 1987 to 1989 Sewage sludges originating from all western German states from 1987 till 1989 have been analyzed for two groups of organic pollutants, which are not specified in the German sewage sludge regulations (Klärschlammverordnung) from 1992: the isomeric 4-nonylphenols and the chlorophenols. The applied analytical methods are presented, as well as the analytical results. In almost all 149 analyzed samples nonylphenols could be found, at an average of 128.2 mg/kg dry matter. In the case of chlorophenols, pentachlorophenol was the most pronounced in respect to amount and to frequency of positive results: i.e. in 85 samples investigated, the mean value was 59.5 μg/kg. Results are reported in percentils. The data correspond to sewage sludges from the past and will be used as a guideline in evaluating all following studies of sludges. Study of the Biological Degradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a Laboratory-scale Plant A one-stage laboratory-scale wastewater treatment plant composed of a bubble column reactor with sedimentor and sludge recycle is fed with an oil/water emulsion from a contaminated site. The oil phase is highly contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The samples are taken regularly at defined points of the treatment plant (influent, reactor, return sludge, effluent). The analysis of PAH is performed by HPLC. We can show that all analysed PAH including the poorly degradable carcinogenic substances such as benzo[a]pyrene are biologically transformed. Additional measurements of the toxic and mutagenic potential of the wastewater show that in the laboratory-scale plant full removal of the carcinogenic potential is not achieved. This is due to the fact that during the biological transformation of higher condensated PAH mutagenic dead-end metabolites are produced. 相似文献

Biological Degradation of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene in a Continuous Bioreactor and Kinetic Studies Experimental results on the aerobic biological degradation with complete mineralization of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) are presented. A culture of Pseudomonas sp. DNT from Spain and Nishino was used. The degradation was examined with batch cultures for the determination of kinetic and stoichiometric coefficients. Further experiments were carried out with a continuous culture in a fixed-bed reactor with recirculation in order to obtain high degradation rates. The reactor was packed with ceramic Raschig rings (55 mL) and had a liquid reaction volume of 160 mL. The minimal salt media from Spanggord et al. with and without (NH4)2S)4 as nitrogen source was used as substrate. 2,4-DNT was the sole source of carbon and energy. From batch experiments a yield coefficient YB/S = (0.30 ± 0.05) g g?1 was calculated from a mass balance of the elements. This result was confirmed by calculations using literature data. Fitting the experimental data to the Monod equation, μmax = 0.1 h?1 and KS = 0.01…0.03 mmol L?1 were obtained. It was demonstrated by batch experiments that 2,4-DNT is not only used as the source of carbon and energy but also as the nitrogen source. In the fixed-bed reactor, a degradation of 92…97% was reached with a maximal 2,4-DNT load of 95 mg L?1 h?1. The rate of continuous degradation could be described by a pseudo-first-order reaction (k = 9.73 h?1). The complete mineralization of 2,4-DNT was verified by the measurement of DOC and the formed nitrite and nitrate. The formed nitrite was nitrified simultaneously. It was demonstrated by these experiments that large scale biological treatment of industrial effluent containing 2,4-DNT may be successful. 相似文献

A large quantity of by-product lime wastes with high water content produced from chemicals manufacturing processes has been stacked in an open area in Incheon, Korea. Highly alkaline leachate and fine dust emanating from the stacked lime wastes caused an environmental concern in the city. So evaporative drying and stabilization of the fine-grained wastes and use of the on site marine clay as a natural geomembrane liner using drying hardening were considered as a part of a landfill construction plan. Treatment of the lime wastes and marine clay was focused on maximizing the evaporative drying and the density. Evaporation experiments were conducted in field condition to understand evaporation characteristics and to evaluate actual evaporation rate of the lime wastes and marine clay. Local Class A pan evaporation data from a nearby weather station for last 30 years indicated that mean annual and monthly evaporations were 1,178.5 and 98.2 mm, respectively. Relative evaporations of the sludge lime, cake lime, and marine clay compared with the pan evaporation were 114.9, 61.9, and 119.0%, respectively. Estimates of annual evaporations from storage surfaces in the field based on the relative evaporation data were 1,353.6, 729.1, and 1,402.2 mm for the sludge lime, cake lime, and the marine clay, respectively. And annual net evaporations considering rainfall effect were estimated as between 879.9 and 1,082.9 mm for the lime sludge, between 473.9 and 583.3 mm for the lime cake, and between 981.5 and 1,191.9 mm for the marine clay. It was expected that the actual field evaporation rate would be varied with the moisture contents of the lime and the clay. Results of these experiments will provide useful implications for the drying behavior of the by-product lime and the marine clay and landfill or management plan of the storages. 相似文献

Thermocatalytic low temperature conversion (LTC) is a new method for the disposal of sewage sludge. Using this method, sludge is converted into a residual solid (coal) along with reaction water, oil, and non‐condensable gases. The oil can be used as an energy source and the coal as a substitute for charcoal. To this end, it is important to determine whether there are any easily available contaminants present in the coal generated by the process. Contaminants that can be strongly sorbed by sewage sludge solids are, e. g., pharmaceuticals and disinfectants. As an example the fate of the persistent and strong adsorbing disinfectant benzalkonium chloride (BAC) has been investigated within the LTC process. The sewage sludge was spiked with BAC and then subjected to the LTC process. The resulting coal was extracted and analyzed using LC‐LC/ESI‐MS/MS (ion trap). BAC could not be detected in the LTC coal, although it could be extracted from the spiked sludge before the LTC treatment. It can thus be concluded that the investigated compound is not easily available in the coal, and hence that its use does not present a risk. 相似文献
