New generation superconducting gravimeters (SGs), which have been demonstrated to be better than the best seismometers STS-1 at frequencies below 1 mHz, can be accepted as the quietest vertical seismometers for observation of long-period earth free oscillations. Wavelet filtering with narrow band-pass frequency response as shown in this paper is very helpful in removing at- mospheric pressure effects from on gravity records in long-period seismic mode frequency bands. The processing of high quality SG records after the great Sumatra earthquake (Dec. 26, 2004) with wavelet filtering leads to clear observations of all coupled toroidal modes below 1.5 mHz except these for 0T5, 0T7 and 1T1; moreover 1T2 and 1T3 are, for the first time, unambiguously revealed in the vertical components of the free oscillations. The three well-resolved splitting singlets of overtones 2S1 are observed from a single SG record for the first time. 相似文献

QC-estimates of Kachchh Basin in western India have been obtained in a high frequency range from 1.5 to 24.0 Hz using the aftershock
data of Bhuj earthquake of January 26, 2001 recorded within an epicentral distance of 80 km. The decay of coda waves of 30
sec window from 186 seismograms has been analysed in four lapse time windows, adopting the single backscattering model. The
study shows that Qc is a function of frequency and increases as frequency increases. The frequency dependent Qc relations obtained for four lapse-time windows are: Qc=82 f1.17 (20–50 sec), Qc=106 f1.11 (30–60 sec), Qc=126f1.03 (40–70 sec) and Qc=122f1.02 (50–80 sec). These empirical relations represent the average attenuation properties of a zone covering the surface area of
about 11,000, 20,000, 28,000 and 38,000 square km and a depth extent of about 60, 80, 95, 110 km, respectively. With increasing
window length, the degree of frequency dependence, n, decreases marginally from 1.17 to 1.02, whereas Q0 increases significantly from 82 to 122. At lower frequencies up to 6 Hz, Qc−1 of Kachchh Basin is in agreement with other regions of the world, whereas at higher frequencies from 12 to 24 Hz it is found

Historic masonry buildings in seismically active regions are severely damaged by earthquakes, since they certainly have not been explicitly designed by the original builders to withstand seismic effects, at least not in a ‘scientific’ way from today’s point of view. The assessment of their seismic safety is an important first step in planning the appropriate interventions for improving their pertinent resistance. This paper presents a procedure for assessing the seismic safety of historic masonry buildings based on measurements of their natural frequencies and numerical simulations. The modelling of the brittle nonlinear behaviour of masonry is carried out on the macro-level. As an example, a recently completed investigation of the seismic behaviour of the Aachen Cathedral is given, this being the first German cultural monument to be included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list in 1978. Its construction goes back to the 9th century a.d. and it is considered as one of the finest examples of religious architecture in Central Europe. The investigation is based on measurements of the natural frequencies at different positions and numerical simulations using a detailed finite element model of the Cathedral. 相似文献

Earthquake codes have been revised and updated depending on the improvements in the representation of ground motions, soils and structures. These revisions have been more frequently seen in recent years. One of the key changes in earthquake codes has been performed on the design spectra. In this paper, the design spectra recommended by Turkish Earthquake Code and three other well known codes (Uniform Building Code, Eurocode 8, and International Building Code) are considered for comparison. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the differences caused by the use of different codes in the dynamic analysis and seismic verification of given types of buildings located at code defined different sites. The differences in expressions and some important points for elastic and inelastic spectra defined by the codes are briefly illustrated in tables and figures. Anomalous water level changes were observed at two wells associated with seismic swarm activity off Izu Peninsula on March,
1997. These are coseismic water level drops followed by gradual postseismic water level rise at the time of large earthquakes
during the swarm activity. The post-seismic water level rises, which can be fitted by an exponential function with a time
constant of about six hours, are explained in terms of the horizontal pressure diffusion due to the pressure gradient in the

is described. A high efficiency of using the laser strainmeters for the study of earthquakes and their precursors is shown.

The Harvard CMT catalogue contains 481 shallow earthquakes that occurred between 1 January 1977 and 30 November 2005 within
a broad region defined by the geographical latitude from 3°S to 14°N and by the longitude from 91°E to 102°E. There are 230
events that occurred before the great earthquake of 26 December 2004. Their surface distribution is not uniform and the source
area of the 2004 great event appears as an area of seismic quiescence with a radius of about 100 km. There are 186 events
that occurred between the two great earthquakes of 26 December 2004 and 28 March 2005. Practically all of them are located
to the northwest from the great earthquake of 2005, that in turn was followed by 63 events, mostly located to the southeast.
The cumulative seismic moment from earthquakes before the occurrence of the great event of 2004 increased rather regularly
with time, with sudden increase about twenty years and two years before the occurrence of the great event. The seismic moment
of earthquakes between the two great events increased rapidly during the first ten-fifteen days, then flattened out and increased
slowly with time. After the great event of 2005 the seismic moment shows quiet increase during some 115 days, then sudden
jump, followed by very small activity till the end of our observations. From the spatial distribution of seismic moment of
earthquakes that occurred before the great event of 2004 it follows that its largest release appeared to the southeast from
the great event, around the rupture area of the great earthquake of 2005. The largest release of seismic moment from earthquakes
between the two great events is observed in the vicinity of the 2004 event and further up to the north. The seismic moment
from earthquakes that occurred after the great event of 2005 was mostly released in its vicinity and further down to the south. 相似文献

New observations of fracture nucleation are presented from three triaxial compression experiments on intact samples of Westerly
granite, using Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring. By conducting the tests under different loading conditions, the fracture
process is demonstrated for quasi-static fracture (under AE Feedback load), a slowly developing unstable fracture (loaded
at a `slow' constant strain rate of 2.5 × 10−6 /s) and an unstable fracture that develops near instantaneously (loaded at a `fast' constant strain rate of 5 × 10−5 /s). By recording a continuous ultrasonic waveform during the critical period of fracture, the entire AE catalogue can be
captured and the exact time of fracture defined. Under constant strain loading, three stages are observed: (1) An initial
nucleation or stable growth phase at a rate of ~ 1.3 mm/s, (2) a sudden increase to a constant or slowly accelerating propagation
speed of ~ 18 mm/s, and (3) unstable, accelerating propagation. In the ~ 100 ms before rupture, the high level of AE activity
(as seen on the continuous record) prevented the location of discrete AE events. A lower bound estimate of the average propagation
velocity (using the time-to-rupture and the existing fracture length) suggests values of a few m/s. However from a low gain
acoustic record, we infer that in the final few ms, the fracture propagation speed increased to 175 m/s. These results demonstrate
similarities between fracture nucleation in intact rock and the nucleation of dynamic instabilities in stick slip experiments.
It is suggested that the ability to constrain the size of an evolving fracture provides a crucial tool in further understanding
the controls on fracture nucleation. 相似文献

Seismic velocity parameters in limited, but heterogeneous volumes can be inferred using a double-difference tomographic algorithm,
but to obtain meaningful results accuracy must be maintained at every step of the computation. MONTEILLER et al. (2005) have devised a double-difference tomographic algorithm that takes full advantage of the accuracy of cross-spectral
time-delays of large correlated event sets. This algorithm performs an accurate computation of theoretical travel-time delays
in heterogeneous media and applies a suitable inversion scheme based on optimization theory. When applied to Kilauea Volcano,
in Hawaii, the double-difference tomography approach shows significant and coherent changes to the velocity model in the well-resolved
volumes beneath the Kilauea caldera and the upper east rift. In this paper, we first compare the results obtained using MONTEILLER
et al.'s algorithm with those obtained using the classic travel-time tomographic approach. Then, we evaluated the effect of using
data series of different accuracies, such as handpicked arrival-time differences (``picking differences'), on the results
produced by double-difference tomographic algorithms. We show that picking differences have a non-Gaussian probability density
function (pdf). Using a hyperbolic secant pdf instead of a Gaussian pdf allows improvement of the double-difference tomographic
result when using picking difference data. We completed our study by investigating the use of spatially discontinuous time-delay
