The dredged marine sediments are classified as waste and how to deal with such kind of abandoned materials is a great challenge. The main objective of this experimental work is to provide a novel way to reuse dredged sediment as filling materials in road section. The laboratory dewatering test is performed to model the in situ evaporation and dewatering process of untreated and treated sediment with chemical binder. The impact of binder amount and time is discussed on the change of water content influenced by evaporation. To valorize dredged sediments as roadbed materials, a hydraulic binder is incorporated to investigate its effect on the bearing capacity and strength performance. The suitability of stabilized sediment is assessed based on the obtained mechanical results followed by a detailed discussion on the in situ test roads.  相似文献

Soft clay with high sodium chloride salt concentration is a problem encountered by geotechnical and highway engineers. Chemical stabilization using cement is an attractive method to improve the engineering properties of soft soil. However, very limited studies have been conducted to reveal the effect of salt concentration on the engineering properties of cement-stabilized soil and the reported results in literature are not consistent. The impact of sodium chloride salt on the strength and stiffness properties of cement-stabilized Lianyungang marine clay is studied in this study. The clay with various sodium chloride salt concentrations was prepared artificially and stabilized by various contents of Ordinary Portland cement. A series of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests of cement stabilized clay specimen after 7, 14, and 28 days curing periods were carried out. The results indicate that a high sodium chloride salt concentration has a detrimental effect on the UCS and stiffness of cement-stabilized clay. The detrimental effect of salt concentration on the strength and stiffness of cement-stabilized clay directly relates to cement content. Soils mixed with high cement content are more resistant to the negative effect of salts than soils mixed with low cement content. The ratio of modulus of elasticity to UCS of cement treated soil does not have an obvious relationship with salt concentration. The findings of this study present a rational basis for the understanding of the impact of salt on the engineering properties of cement-treated soil.  相似文献

The fate and movement of dissolved substances in soils and groundwater has generated considerable concern for the quality of the subsurface environment. Many analytical solutions for the partial differential equations that describe solute and pollutant movement exist. Numerical solutions are more general, and often more difficult to verify. In order to determine the model error, the examination of the ability of numerical methods compared to analytical methods is strongly recommended. The objective of the study is to make a comparison between numerical and analytical solution models for solute transport equation. In this study, the numerical solution calculated with the WAVE-model is compared with the analytical solution calculated with CXTFTT-model. The study scenarios considered variables such as compartment depth, applied flux at the top and soil dispersivity under steady-state conditions. The simulations depend on 27 solute infiltration scenarios. The solute concentrations were calculated with the WAVE-model and the CXTFIT-model for each scenario. The WAVE-model error was evaluated with three methods: absolute average maximum error, relative average maximum error and relative average area error. The study implied that the WAVE-model error increased with the increase of the compartment depth, decreasing soil dispersivity, and decrease in flux. The study leads to the recommendation to use compartment depth as thin as possible to minimise the WAVE-model error. Furthermore, it is more useful to use several numerical solution models, such as SWMS-2D model, to evaluate and examine the WAVE-model.  相似文献

Climate warming due to the enhanced greenhouse effect is expected to have a significant impact on the natural environment and human activity in high latitudes. Because of its geography, wide coastal areas, water resources, forests, and wetlands, the environment of Estonia is sensitive to climate change and sea level rise. Climate change scenarios for Estonia were generated using a Model for the Assessment of Greenhouse-gas Induced Climate Change (MAGICC) and a regional climate change database, Scenario Generator (SCENGEN). Three alternative emission scenarios were combined with data from 14 general circulation model experiments. The assessment results of forest resources using RipFor, a forest-soil-atmosphere model, show that climate warming would enhance forest growth in Estonia resulting in increased productivity (2–9%) of harvestable timber on highly productive sites. Nutrient mobility increases greatly and in highly permeable soils with stable vegetation, increased mobility may result in nutrient losses through leaching. The assessment results of water resources using the simple water balance model, WatBal, show that the runoff regime of Estonian rivers would equilibrate and the groundwater table would rise. Climate warming would not cause any particular problems with water supply but the groundwater quality may suffer from increased leaching. Due to milder winters and increased storminess, the destruction of coastal areas, inundation of wetlands and disappearance of rare plant communities in coastal areas would be the most damaging results of climate change. Most sandy beaches high in recreational value would disappear. However, isostatic uplift and settlements inland from the present coastline reduce the risk of socio-economic decline. This paper reviews the modes of formation of sinkhole subsidence associated with mining activities, drawing on examples in India. Sinkhole (pot-hole) subsidence is an abrupt local depression at the surface which can be hazardous to life and property due to its tendency to occur without warning. Shallow extraction, weak overburden and geological discontinuities are the main factors which cause them. Sinkholes occur due to the failure of a mine roof which migrates through the overlying strata until the failure zone intercepts the unconsolidated overburden. Alternatively they may occur by the creation of cavities in the overburden following the inflow of sand and soil from the overlying weathered and friable strata through faults. Overburden cavities eventually cave in and sinkholes appear at the surface. Sinkholing phenomena can be controlled to some extent by proper design of mining supports and construction of walls to create a barrier around an area prone to sinkholes in bord and pillar workings. Backfilling and grouting can be used to stabilize abandoned underground workings.  相似文献
