A hierarchy of models is being developed to represent the changes in climate that could occur in the next 10,000 years at proposed nuclear waste repository sites in the U.S. Three levels of modeling of the global aspects of climate change are included. At the broadest level a multitude of theoretical representations are being considered, most based upon the Milankovitch theory. A set of at least 150 situations will be examined, and those of concern for site stability will be screened for more thorough analysis at the next level of detail. The screening criteria include estimation of the probability of the event; the level of probability which must be considered (0.0001) requires use of the most detailed paleoclimatic records available. Uncertainty in the results will be evaluated by comparison of model reconstructions to the paleoclimatic record and by Monte Carlo analyses.This paper was presented at Emerging Concept, MGUS-87 Conference, Redwood City, California, 13–15 April 1987.  相似文献

Bed load transport rate was measured in ten self-formed small-scale gravel braided streams developed in a laboratory flume at several different values of steady discharge and flume gradient. The streams are approximate Froude models of typical prototype braided streams but of no particular river. Slight viscous effects may be present in the models because particle Reynolds numbers are close to 70. Total bed load discharge was measured every fifteen minutes throughout each 60 hour run. In addition, 80 channel cross-sections were measured in each run to establish the average channel geometry. Total bed load transport rate correlates well with total discharge and total stream power, although at a given stream power bed load discharge is greater when braiding is less intense and the width/depth ratio is lower. Analysis using unit stream power and cross-section average bed shear stress reveals that the laboratory data conform to existing empirical bed load transport relationships. However, comparison with field data from gravel-bed rivers shows discrepancies that may be due to differences in bed material size gradation and bed sediment structure. At constant discharge, wide fluctuations in bed load discharge occur with some regularity. Periods range from 2 to 10 hours in the models, which is equivalent to several tens of hours in a prototype. The presence of these long-period fluctuations compounds the problems of field measurement of bed load in braided streams.  相似文献

A special experimental technique enabled us to study in detail seismic events on a fault model in a uniaxial stress field. The recording system used made it possible to investigate the radiation pattern for all the events observed including the precise determination of the dislocation origin.The aim of the present paper is (1) to find the relation between shear and tensile displacements, (2) to check a possible influence of the process of tensile crack generation on the seismic energy release and (3) to compare the seismic regime of a single fault before and after the tensile crack generation, respectively.Results prove the dominating importance of shear mechanism for the seismic energy release. The tensile displacement can be seismoactive only under special contact conditions on the fault plane.The existence of tensile cracks at the fault tips changed the pattern of seismic energy radiation. This feature is probably caused by subsequent changes in contact conditions on the fault plane and in the stress field around the fault.A comparison of some results of the present model experiments with the already published results of geological and seismological measurements and investigations shows the analogous character in laboratory and in nature of the process of tectonic earthquake preparation, the displacement course on the fault during the earthquake and the manner of seismic energy release on faults.  相似文献

The empirical adequacy of four phosphorus mass-balance models is evaluated with respect to how the prediction error variance of the corresponding net sedimentation parameters is propagated in the steadystate equations. Using the criterion of minimum propagation error variance (PEV), different groups of lakes can be distinguished for which different empirical equations are used to predict net phosphorus sedimentation. The classification reduced prediction error significantly and also reflected different patterns of sedimentation. Application of this criterion to time-series of individual lakes shows that it is possible to determine a priori whether net annual sedimentation will be better correlated to the annual loading or to the lake content. The correlations depended also on the load/lake content ratio, suggesting that net sedimentation is best viewed as the sum of the partial sedimentation of the load and of the partial sedimentation of the lake content. On average, 25% of the load and 18% of the lake content are sedimented annually. Viewing net phosphorus sedimentation as a function of both the load and the lake content can also explain and predict the well-known cross-sectional correlation between phosphorus retention and water residence time.  相似文献

We propose a finite difference method, using a hexagonal grid, to compute displacements (stresses, velocities, accelerations) in the near-field of a 2-D in-plane stress-drop crack, in both whole space (constant stress-drop) and half-space (depth-dependent stress-drop). To exercise the method, the stress field distribution is evaluated for both fundamental 2-D shear cracks, anti-plane. In order to test the method's reliability, the results are compared with some analytical and numerical solutions available in the literature (Kostrov, 1964;Virieux andMadariaga, 1982). For the in-plane source, the results emphasize that the method can resolve the stress concentration due to the rupture front from the stress peak associated with the shear wave propagating in front of the crack. Synthetic motions are computed on the fault, but also in an infinite medium and at the free surface. The rather complex waveforms generated in the near-field, even by simple sources, emphasize the contribution of all wave terms (near, intermediate and far-field) to the motion. The presence of near-field and the numerical procedure explain the significant low frequency content of the computed seismograms. The set of treated problems proves the method is stable and accurate.  相似文献

Results for minor stratospheric constituents using a 2D model with self-consistent transport parameters are reported. The meridional circulation is obtained from the output of the MIT-GIT 3D stratospheric model (Cunnold et al., 1975). Consistent data from the same model are used to evaluate the diffusive tensors following the formalism of Holton (1981) and Tung (1982). Chemical damping is consequently taken into account, so that the entire model is built in a selfconsistent manner at the least with the 3D model and no ad hoc assumptions are made with respect of transport parameters. This version of the model represents a major improvement on previous work (Pitari and Visconti, 1984), which used to much too simple chemistry. Results are compared whenever possible with available experimental data, with particular emphasis on chemical reacting species. This comparison shows in general an agreement which is qualitatively similar to the one obtained from classical Eulerian models where transport parameters are often tuned to long-lived tracers without any sound physical basis.  相似文献

Square plate models with a diagonally located slit in compression were studied photoelastically. The resulting stress field surrounding the discontinuity (slit) is evaluated before and after seismoactive (seismic-energy-releasing) shear displacement. The mechanism of the fast shear movement (stick-slip), including its radiation properties, in interpreted. The results confirm the existence of a central locked zone in the loaded slit, the limits of which coincide with the initiation points of stick-slip movements. The zone is interpreted as the source of the seismic energy release. The complementary measurements (direct optical and ultrasonic) are presented to verify the results of the photoelastic analysis. The results obtained are discussed in regard to the conclusions that follow from the theory of elasticity.  相似文献
