Convective vortices on Mars: a reanalysis of Viking Lander 2 meteorological data, sols 1-60 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Dust devil data from Mars is limited by a lack of data relating to diurnal dust devil behaviour. Previous work looking at the Viking Lander meteorological data highlighted seasonal changes in temporal occurrence of dust devils and gave an indication of typical dust devil diameter, size, and internal dynamics. The meteorological data from Viking Lander 2 for sols 1 to 60 have been revisited to provide detailed diurnal dust devil statistics. Results of our analysis show that the Viking Lander 2 experienced a possible 38 convective vortices in the first 60 sols of its mission with a higher occurrence in the morning compared to Earth, possibly as a result of turbulence generated by the Lander body. Dust devil events have been categorised by statistical confidence and intensity. Some initial analysis and discussion of the results is also presented. Assuming a similar dust loading to the vortices seen by Mars Pathfinder, it is estimated that the amount of dust lofted in the locality of the Lander is approximately 800 ± 10 kgsol−1km−2. 相似文献

Electrochemical Characterization of the Surface of Activated Carbon Used in Water Treatment Plants. We tried to measure electrochemically those properties of activated carbons which are important for using them for water purification. A success was achieved with the electrochemical immersion potential Ui which is found to be a function of concentration of functional surface groups on the carbon surface. The purpose of this paper is to extend the locally based prediction methodology of BayMar to a global one by modelling discrete spatial structures as Markov random fields. BayMar uses one-dimensional Markov-properties for estimating spatial correlation and Bayesian updating for locally integrating prior and additional information. The methodology of this paper introduces a new estimator of the field parameters based on the maximum likelihood technique for one-dimensional Markov chains. This makes the estimator straightforward to calculate also when there is a large amount of missing observations, which often is the case in geological applications. We make simulations (both unconditional and conditional on the observed data) and maximum a posteriori predictions (restorations) of the non-observed data using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, in the restoration case by employing simulated annealing. The described method gives satisfactory predictions, while more work is needed in order to simulate, since it appears to have a tendency to overestimate strong spatial dependence. It provides an important development compared to the BayMar-methodology by facilitating global predictions and improved use of sparse data. 相似文献

The land/sea warming contrast is a phenomenon of both equilibrium and transient simulations of climate change: large areas
of the land surface at most latitudes undergo temperature changes whose amplitude is more than those of the surrounding oceans.
Using idealised GCM experiments with perturbed SSTs, we show that the land/sea contrast in equilibrium simulations is associated
with local feedbacks and the hydrological cycle over land, rather than with externally imposed radiative forcing. This mechanism
also explains a large component of the land/sea contrast in transient simulations as well. We propose a conceptual model with
three elements: (1) there is a spatially variable level in the lower troposphere at which temperature change is the same over
land and sea; (2) the dependence of lapse rate on moisture and temperature causes different changes in lapse rate upon warming
over land and sea, and hence a surface land/sea temperature contrast; (3) moisture convergence over land predominantly takes
place at levels significantly colder than the surface; wherever moisture supply over land is limited, the increase of evaporation
over land upon warming is limited, reducing the relative humidity in the boundary layer over land, and hence also enhancing
the land/sea contrast. The non-linearity of the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship of saturation specific humidity to temperature
is critical in (2) and (3). We examine the sensitivity of the land/sea contrast to model representations of different physical
processes using a large ensemble of climate model integrations with perturbed parameters, and find that it is most sensitive
to representation of large-scale cloud and stomatal closure. We discuss our results in the context of high-resolution and

A finite volume MUSCL scheme for the numerical integration of 2D shallow water equations is presented. In the framework of the SLIC scheme, the proposed weighted surface-depth gradient method (WSDGM) computes intercell water depths through a weighted average of DGM and SGM reconstructions, in which the weight function depends on the local Froude number. This combination makes the scheme capable of performing a robust tracking of wet/dry fronts and, together with an unsplit centered discretization of the bed slope source term, of maintaining the static condition on non-flat topographies (C-property). A correction of the numerical fluxes in the computational cells with water depth smaller than a fixed tolerance enables a drastic reduction of the mass error in the presence of wetting and drying fronts. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed scheme are assessed by comparing numerical results with analytical and reference solutions of a set of test cases. This paper proposes robust methods for local planar surface fitting in 3D laser scanning data. Searching through the literature revealed that many authors frequently used Least Squares (LS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for point cloud processing without any treatment of outliers. It is known that LS and PCA are sensitive to outliers and can give inconsistent and misleading estimates. RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC) is one of the most well-known robust methods used for model fitting when noise and/or outliers are present. We concentrate on the recently introduced Deterministic Minimum Covariance Determinant estimator and robust PCA, and propose two variants of statistically robust algorithms for fitting planar surfaces to 3D laser scanning point cloud data. The performance of the proposed robust methods is demonstrated by qualitative and quantitative analysis through several synthetic and mobile laser scanning 3D data sets for different applications. Using simulated data, and comparisons with LS, PCA, RANSAC, variants of RANSAC and other robust statistical methods, we demonstrate that the new algorithms are significantly more efficient, faster, and produce more accurate fits and robust local statistics (e.g. surface normals), necessary for many point cloud processing tasks. Consider one example data set used consisting of 100 points with 20% outliers representing a plane. The proposed methods called DetRD-PCA and DetRPCA, produce bias angles (angle between the fitted planes with and without outliers) of 0.20° and 0.24° respectively, whereas LS, PCA and RANSAC produce worse bias angles of 52.49°, 39.55° and 0.79° respectively. In terms of speed, DetRD-PCA takes 0.033 s on average for fitting a plane, which is approximately 6.5, 25.4 and 25.8 times faster than RANSAC, and two other robust statistical methods, respectively. The estimated robust surface normals and curvatures from the new methods have been used for plane fitting, sharp feature preservation and segmentation in 3D point clouds obtained from laser scanners.
