A new individual tree-based algorithm for determining forest biomass using small footprint LiDAR data was developed and tested. This algorithm combines computer vision and optimization techniques to become the first training data-based algorithm specifically designed for processing forest LiDAR data. The computer vision portion of the algorithm uses generic properties of trees in small footprint LiDAR canopy height models (CHMs) to locate trees and find their crown boundaries and heights. The ways in which these generic properties are used for a specific scene and image type is dependent on 11 parameters, nine of which are set using training data and the Nelder–Mead simplex optimization procedure. Training data consist of small sections of the LiDAR data and corresponding ground data. After training, the biomass present in areas without ground measurements is determined by developing a regression equation between properties derived from the LiDAR data of the training stands and biomass, and then applying the equation to the new areas. A first test of this technique was performed using 25 plots (radius = 15 m) in a loblolly pine plantation in central Virginia, USA (37.42N, 78.68W) that was not intensively managed, together with corresponding data from a LiDAR canopy height model (resolution = 0.5 m). Results show correlations (r) between actual and predicted aboveground biomass ranging between 0.59 and 0.82, and RMSEs between 13.6 and 140.4 t/ha depending on the selection of training and testing plots, and the minimum diameter at breast height (7 or 10 cm) of trees included in the biomass estimate. Correlations between LiDAR-derived plot density estimates were low (0.22 ≤ r ≤ 0.56) but generally significant (at a 95% confidence level in most cases, based on a one tailed test), suggesting that the program is able to properly identify trees. Based on the results it is concluded that the validation of the first training data-based algorithm for determining forest biomass using small footprint LiDAR data was a success, and future refinement and testing are merited.  相似文献

逆冲构造带的分段性研究是评价该类发震构造地震危险性的基础工作。荥经-马边-盐津逆冲构造带是青藏高原东南边缘重要的NW向强震构造带,该构造带以逆冲错动为主要活动形式,其组合形式与逆冲强度存在南北差异。通过NE向横向断裂的构造地貌分析,发现横向断裂以右旋走滑活动为主,兼有倾滑活动。根据其与纵向断裂的交接关系,将横向断裂概括为横向分割断裂、横向撕裂断裂和横向转换断裂3种类型,讨论了3类横向断裂在逆冲构造带分段中所起的不同作用,进而将荥经-马边-盐津逆冲构造带分为独立的3段,并分析了各段的地震活动特征。研究表明,荥经-马边-盐津逆冲构造带以横向断裂为标志的3分段特点,既体现了段与段之间断裂活动强度、地震破裂强度与步调的差异,又体现了段内地震破裂步调的一致性,表明横向断裂在一定程度上控制了逆冲构造带的破裂分段,只是横向断裂的类型不同,其所起的作用也不同  相似文献

Regular aerosol backscatter measurements using an elastic-backscatter lidar were performed between May 2000 and December 2002 in Barcelona (Spain), within the framework of the European project EARLINET (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network). The mixed-layer depth was one of the major parameters to be retrieved. Three derivative methods have been tested in this complex coastal area using the range-squared-corrected lidar signal: (1) the minimum of its first derivative, (2) the minimum of its second derivative, and (3) the minimum of the first derivative of its logarithm. The second method was found to give statistically the best results when compared to radiosoundings, and was used to process the whole dataset. A number of 162 days and 660 profiles averaged over 30 min have been examined. Between 1000 and 1500 UTC, the mixed-layer depth oscillates between 300 and 1450 m in summer and between 390 and 1420 m in winter. The standard deviation for this portion of the day is 180 and 256 m, respectively, in summer and winter. In summer, low heights (mainly limited to 400–800 m) are associated with large mesoscale compensatory subsidence over the sea and to the thermal internal boundary-layer formation. The strong coastal and orographic influences and the climatological settling of Barcelona determine the complexity of the boundary-layer dynamics and the high heterogeneity of the lidar signals. In many cases, single lidar analyses do not allow an unambiguous determination of the mixed-layer depth. Two diurnal cycle measurements are discussed together with synoptic maps, backtrajectories and radiosoundings in order to outline the complexity of the area and the limitations of the methods.  相似文献

Nocturnal Low-Level Jet Characteristics Over Kansas During Cases-99   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4  
Characteristics and evolution of the low-level jet (LLJ)over southeastern Kansas were investigated during the 1999 Cooperative Surface-AtmosphereExchange Study (CASES–99) field campaign with an instrument complement consisting of ahigh-resolution Doppler lidar (HRDL), a 60 m instrumented tower, and a triangle of Dopplermini-sodar/profiler combinations. Using this collection of instrumentation we determined thespeed UX, height ZX and direction DX of the LLJ. We investigate here the frequencyof occurrence, the spatial distribution, and the evolution through the night, of these LLJcharacteristics. The jet of interest in this study was that which generates the shear and turbulencebelow the jet and near the surface. This was represented by the lowest wind maximum.We found that this wind maximum, which was most often between 7 and 10 m s1,was often at or just below 100 m above ground level as measured by HRDL at the CASEScentral site. Over the 60 km profiler–sodararray, the topography varied by 100 m. The wind speed anddirection were relatively constant over this distance (with some tendency for strongerwinds at the highest site), but ZX was more variable. ZX was occasionally about equal at allthree sites, indicating that the jet was following the terrain, but more often it seemed to berelatively level, i.e., at about the same height above sea level. ZX was also more variable thanUX in the behaviour of the LLJ with time through the night, and on some nights $UX wasremarkably steady. Examples of two nights with strong turbulence below jet level were furtherinvestigated using the 60 m tower at the main CASES–99 site. Evidence of TKE increasing withheight and downward turbulent transport of TKE indicates that turbulence was primarilygenerated aloft and mixed downward, supporting the upside–down boundary layer notion in thestable boundary layer.  相似文献

The Louis scheme for calculating the vertical eddy fluxes within the atmospheric surface layer is improved by broadening the original assumptions. In our approach, the momentum and heat transfer roughness lengths (z0 and zT respectively) can be different, and z0 need not be negligibly small compared with the lowest height (z) in modelling. For these conditions, we choose more consistent wind and potential temperature profile forms, then derive new algorithms for calculating fluxes. Improvement is demonstrated for a wide range of z/L (L is the Obukhov length), z/z0 and z0 zT, by comparing these fluxes with those derived from a theoretical surface-layer model. The improved algorithms can be used in atmospheric modelling systems for more varied surfaces and a wide range of atmospheric stability.  相似文献

In the winter of 1994/95 the TRANSALL research aircraft performed several flights in the region of the Arctic vortex during the period of low stratospheric temperatures. The results of simultaneous measurements of HNO3 column amounts by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) and of aerosol backscatter profiles by the Ozone Lidar EXperiment (OLEX) are presented for two typical flight scenarios across the polar vortex boundary on December 17, 1994 and January 11/12, 1995. On December 17 and January 12, the column amounts of gaseous HNO3 decreased significantly in regions with low stratospheric temperatures. This decrease was correlated with the extent of the polar stratospheric clouds. Depolarisation measurements showed that type Ib PSCs were observed primarily, but equilibrium calculations for H2SO4/HNO3/H2O aerosols seem to underestimate the observed HNO3 sequestering.  相似文献

The shape of the Ti  i 6303.8-Å spectral line of Aldebaran as measured by the line bisector was investigated using high signal-to-noise ratio, high-resolution data. The goal of this study was to understand the nature of the 643-d period in the radial velocity for this star reported by Hatzes & Cochran. Variations in the line bisector with the radial velocity period would provide strong evidence in support of rotational modulation or stellar pulsations as the cause of the 643-d period. A lack of any bisector variability at this period would support the planet hypothesis.
Variations in the line asymmetries are found with a period of 49.93 d. These variations are uncorrelated with the 643-d period found previously in the radial velocity measurements. It is demonstrated that this 50-d period is consistent with an m =4 non-radial sectoral g-mode oscillation. The lack of spectral variability with the radial velocity period of 643 d may provide strong evidence in support of the hypothesis that this variability stems from the reflex motion of the central star due to a planetary companion having a mass of 11 Jupiter masses. However, this long-period variability may still be the result of a low-order ( m =2) pulsation mode as these would cause bisector variations of less than the error measurement.  相似文献

High-resolution, time-resolved spectroscopic observations of Z CMa carried out on 1997 January 14–17 are presented. Large night-to-night and hour-to-hour variations in Hα, Hβ and Na i D P Cygni absorptions, as well as an Hβ emission peak, were observed. Variations in the red wings of the hydrogen emission lines were also detected. The high-velocity wide-emission component on the blue side of Hα appeared on January 17. The observations are discussed in the framework of current wind models.  相似文献

An analysis is described which can derive optical thicknesses and associated quantities from measured intensities and linewidths using convenient expressions for photon escape probabilities and for opacity-broadened line halfwidths. An associated analysis of the effect of observational errors is provided. The analysis treats intensities and linewidths independently so that internal consistency of results can provide a measure of observational accuracy, which is shown here to be a stringent requirement. As examples, first applications are made to Si  II lines in a solar prominence and to some high-resolution observations of the solar He  II 303.78-Å resonance line.  相似文献
