Abstract. The major in situ physiological activities of the common, tropical, West Atlantic demosponge Verongia (= Aplysina) fistularis were determined in order to relate the carbon and energy budgets of this species to the two contrasting patterns documented for bacteriosponges (sponges harbouring large symbiotic bacterial populations) and non-bacteriosponges (sponges lacking such large bacterial populations and considered "normal" sponges). Measurements of specimen dimensions and exhalant water velocity, and samples of exhalant water were obtained from undisturbed field specimens for estimation of rates of water transport, respiration and particulate organic carbon retention. Partial carbon and energy budgets were developed from calculated rates of particulate feeding, respiration and growth. The bacteriosponge, V. fistularis , is very similar to Verongula sp., another bacteriosponge, in terms of high respiration rate, 5.33% of available oxygen being removed during a single-pass water transit, and gross imbalance in particulate carbon and energy budgets, particulate sources supplying only 14% of respiration and growth requirements. The nutrient resource spectrum of Verongia fistularis and other bacteriosponges appears to be overwhelmingly dominated by dissolved organic matter, and thus contrasts strikingly with the present knowledge of nutrition in the normal non-bacteriosponges.  相似文献

通过对COADS和OISST海洋气象资料的分析,以南海的海面温度异常(SSTA)为指示因子,在研究年际尺度上的南海与大尺度ENSO关系的基础上,进一步探讨了季风强迫下Ekman抽吸对SSTA年际变化的贡献。研究发现,南海SSTA滞后5个月时与:Nifio 3的SSTA相关系数最大,且其年际变化依方差贡献大小,分别有42.7月、25.6月及36.6个月的周期,这3个年际模态基本上能够描述海面温度的年际变异,为南海在大尺度ENSO背景下存在区域响应提供了重要的证据;应用Krause—Turner混合层温度方程对南海异常暖事件的研究表明,除了经向风应力异常,Ekman抽吸也是影响SSTA年际变异的主要因素,在某些异常年份甚至是主导因素,为南海SSTA年际变化的研究提供了重要的补充。  相似文献

Wells in aquifers of loose collapsible sediment are cased so that they have a blind wall and gain water only from the bottom. The hydraulic gradient established at the bottom of these wells during pumping brings the aquifer materials in a quicksand state, which may cause abrasion of pipes and pumps and even the destruction of well structure. To examine the quicksand occurrence, an analytical solution for the steady flow to a partially penetrating blind‐wall well in a confined aquifer is developed. The validity of the proposed solution is evaluated numerically. The sensitivity of maximum vertical gradient along the well bottom in response to aquifer and well parameters is examined. The solution is presented in the form of dimensionless‐type curves and equations that can be easily used to design the safe pumping rate and optimum well geometry to protect the well against sand production. The solution incorporates the anisotropy of aquifer materials and can also be used to determine the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A geochemical study was carried out in a small spa area (Onyang Spa, Korea) where intensive pumping of deep thermal groundwater (1 300 000 m3 year−1) is taking place. This has caused the deep fractures to lose their artesian pressure and the upper shallow fractures have been encroached by shallow, cold waters. To quantify the influence of long‐term heavy pumping on the quality of the geothermal water, groundwater sampling and chemical analysis, water‐level measurement, and well loggings were performed for the selected deep thermal wells and shallow cold wells. Chemical analysis results indicate a big contrast in water chemistry and origins between the two water types. Shallow groundwater shows a wider concentration ranges in solutes that are closely related to human activity, illustrating the water's vulnerability to contamination near the land surface. Plots of water chemistry as a function of fluoride reveal that the quality of the thermal water was greatly influenced by the shallow, cold groundwater and that intensive pumping of the deep thermal groundwater has caused the introduction of shallow groundwater into the deeper fractures. Although the deep and the shallow fractures were piezometrically separated to some extent, a mixing model based on fluoride and nitrate indicated that the cold‐water fractions in the thermal wells are up to 50%. This suggests that the thermal water is faced with water quality degradation by the downward flow of the shallow, cold water. Restriction on the total of all the pumpage permits per unit area is suggested to restore the artesian pressure of the deep thermal aquifer and to prevent cold‐water intrusion in the study area. This study presents a novel hysteresis model based on van Genuchten's soil‐moisture relationships. The proposed model yields a series of closed‐form relationships in which two shape factors α and η are determined from the main drying and wetting curves. Experimental and literature‐cited data were used to assess model accuracy. The proposed model was also compared with the Scott and KP models. Analytical results indicate that the present model is simple, accurate and effective in constructing the series of wetting and drying scanning curves. Notably, the proposed model outperforms the Scott and KP models in terms of model accuracy. Moreover, the novel model eliminates the pumping effect and has perfect closure at scanning curve reversal points. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Most methods developed to represent water flow phenomena in an unconfined aquifer with a fully penetrated pumping well are either numerical, such as the well‐known FEMWTER model, or experimental; analytical models of a partially penetrated pumping well are rare. This study employs the linearized Richards equation as the governing equation, with the aid of Fourier Integral Transformation, to obtain an analytical solution of the water content distribution in an unconfined aquifer with a partially penetrated pumping well. The results from this study could serve to substantiate in some sense results from numerical models. In addition, the theory developed herein can be modified to simulate a vacuum‐pressured pumping well since it is derived by considering, among others, the location and length of a well screen with fluxes. Daluo Mountains lie at front of the arcuate tectonic belt at the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and are the landform boundary zone between the active Tibetan Plateau and the stable North China Craton. Studying of the late Cenozoic uplift evolution of Daluo Mountains is important for understanding the expansion mechanism of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau and its influence on the western North China Craton. In this study, the late Cenozoic uplift of Daluo Mountains is constructed from the development of the late Cenozoic alluvial fan around Daluo Mountains. The entire sedimentary sequence and framework of the fan was revealed by the newly obtained drilling core data. The cosmogenic nuclide, optically stimulated luminescence, and detrital zircon U-Pb dating results provide new evidences for discussion about the initial timing of the late Cenozoic uplift of Daluo Mountains and the key stages of uplift during the Pleistocene. The late Cenozoic alluvial fan at front of Daluo Mountains overlies a set of fluvial-facies strata; therefore, development of the alluvial-fan marks the start of late Cenozoic uplift of Daluo Mountains. The timing of this event can be constrained to ~4.64 Ma. Two extensive gravel layers (dated to ca. 0.76–0.6 Ma and ~0.05 Ma) developed during the Pleistocene, indicating two episodes of considerable uplift. This study provides a new time scale for the uplift and expansion of the arcuate tectonic belt at the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.  相似文献

河流沉积物蕴藏着其形成之时水动力条件及古气候变化等重要信息,因此研究河流相沉积物不仅可指示其沉积之时的水动力条件,还可对其反演的古气候进行一定的探索。伊逊河地处燕山东段,开展其下游河流相沉积物粒度、磁化率及形成年代的探讨,可为燕山山地河流相沉积物蕴藏的古环境意义研究提供参考。笔者等通过野外实地调查、光释光测年、粒度分析及磁化率实验对伊逊河下游三级阶地(T3)前缘剖面展开研究,初步确立了伊逊河下游T3的形成时间,大致为晚更新世晚期至全新世早期(13.14±0.76 ka BP至9.55±0.58 ka BP),结合野外实测及实验数据分析发现此剖面可划分为11层,探讨了伊逊河在晚更新世晚期至全新世早期水动力条件的变化,厘定了伊逊河下游9次较为明显的水文事件,并提出新仙女木事件始末及全新世初期此剖面沉积物记录与多种气候变化指标和区域气候变化有较高的一致性,揭示了伊逊河下游河流阶地沉积物对气候变化的响应较为明显,研究结果为该地区古环境研究提供了基础地质依据。  相似文献

Winter coastal upwelling off northwest Borneo in the South China Sea(SCS) is investigated by using satellite data, climatological temperature and salinity fields and reanalysis data. The upwelling forms in December, matures in January, starts to decay in February and almost disappears in March. Both Ekman transport induced by the alongshore winter monsoon and Ekman pumping due to orographic wind stress curl are favorable for the upwelling. Transport estimates demonstrate that the month-to-month variability of Ekman transport and Ekman pumping are both consistent with that of winter coastal upwelling, but Ekman transport is two times larger than Ekman pumping in January and February. Under the influence of El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO), the upwelling shows remarkable interannual variability: during winter of El Ni?o(La Ni?a) years, an anticyclonic(a cyclonic) wind anomaly is established in the SCS, which behaves a northeasterly(southwesterly) anomaly and a positive(negative) wind stress curl anomaly off the northwest Borneo coast, enhancing(reducing) the upwelling and causing anomalous surface cooling(warming) and higher(lower) chlorophyll concentration. The sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA) associated with ENSO off the northwest Borneo coast has an opposite phase to that off southeast Vietnam, resulting in a SSTA seesaw pattern in the southern SCS in winter.  相似文献
