Optimal Perturbations Triggering Weather Regime Transitions: Onset of Blocking and Strong Zonal Flow 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, the approach proposed by Mu and Jiang (2008) to obtain the optimal perturbations for triggering blocking (BL) onset is generalized to seek the optimal perturbations triggering onset of the strong zonal flow (SZF) regime. The BL and SZF regimes are characterized by the same dipole-like anomaly pattern superposed on the climatological flow, but with opposite sign. The results show that this method is also superior at finding the initial optimal perturbations triggering onset of the SZF regime, especially in the medium range. Furthermore, by comparing the two kinds of conditional nonlinear optimal perturbations (CNOPs) trig-gering onset of BL and SZF regimes, we find that in the linear approximation, there is symmetry in the sensitivities for BL and SZF onset, and the perturbations that optimally trigger onset of BL and SZF regimes at times when linear approximation is valid are also characterized by the same spatial pattern but with opposite sign. Whereas when the optimization time is extended to 6 days, the two kinds of CNOPs lose their out-of-phase behavior. The nonlinearity results in an asymmetry between the sensitivity for BL and SZF onset. Additionally, we find that the optimal perturbations have one common property, which is that the second baroclinic mode contributes more to the initial perturbations while the barotropic mode dominates the final structures. 相似文献

The variational assimilation theory is generally based on unbiased observations. In practice, however, almost all observations
suffer from biases arising from observational instruments, radiative transfer operator, precondition of data, and so on. Therefore,
a bias correction scheme is indispensable. The current scheme for radiance bias correction in the GRAPES 3DVar system is an
offline scheme. It is actually a static correction for the radiance bias before the process of cost function minimization.
In consideration of its effects on forecast results, this kind of scheme has some shortcomings. Thus, this study provides
a variational bias correction (VarBC) scheme for the GRAPES 3DVar system following Dee’s idea. In the VarBC scheme, the observation
operator is modified and a new control variable is defined by taking the predictor coefficients as the control parameters.
According to the feature of the GRAPES-3DVAR, an incremental formulation is applied and the original bias correction scheme
is maintained in the actual process of observations. The VarBC is designed to co-exist with the original scheme, because it
is a dynamic revision to the observational operator on the basis of the old method, i.e., it adjusts the model state vector
along with the control parameters to an unbiased state in the process of minimization and the assimilation system remains
consistent with available information automatically. Preliminary experimental results show that the mean departures of background-minus-observation
and analysis-minus-observation are reduced as expected. In a case study of the heavy rainfall that happened in South China
on 11–13 June 2008, the 500-hPa geopotential height is better simulated using the analyzed field from the VarBC as the initial

For a century or so, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has been providing temperature forecast for the whole of Hong Kong with
the HKO Headquarters as the reference location. In recent decades, due to spreading of population from the main urban center
to satellite towns, there is an increasing demand for regional temperature forecasts. To support such provision, the HKO has
developed a regression model to provide objective guidance to forecasters in formulating forecasts of maximum and minimum
temperatures for the next day at various locations in Hong Kong. In this paper, the regression model is presented, together
with the assessment of its performance. Based on the verification of one year of forecasts, it is found that the root mean
square errors (RMSEs) of maximum (minimum) temperature forecasts are from about 1.3 to 2.1 (1.1 to 1.4) degrees, respectively.
The regression model is shown to have generally out-performed the operational regional spectral model then operated by HKO.
Regional temperature forecast methods of other meteorological or research centers are also surveyed. Equipped with the regression
model, the HKO has launched an online regional temperature forecast service for the next day in Hong Kong since March 2008. 相似文献

Millimeter-wavelength radar has proved to be an effective instrument for cloud observation and research. In this study, 8-mm-wavelength cloud radar (MMCR) with Doppler and polarization capabilities was used to investigate cloud dynamics in China for the first time. Its design, system specifications, calibration, and application in measuring clouds associated with typhoon are discussed in this article. The cloud radar measurements of radar reflectivity (Z), Doppler velocity (Vr), velocity spectrum width (Sw) and the depolar-ization ratio (LDR) at vertical incidence were used to analyze the microphysical and dynamic processes of the cloud system and precipitation associated with Typhoon Nuri, which occurred in southern China in August 2008. The results show the reflectivity observed using MMCR to be consistent with the echo height and the melting-layer location data obtained by the nearby China S-band new-generation weather radar (SA), but the Ka-band MMCR provided more detailed structural information about clouds and weak precipitation data than did the SA radar. The variation of radar reflectivity and LDR in vertical structure reveals the transformation of particle phase from ice to water. The vertical velocity and velocity spectrum width of MMCR observations indicate an updraft and strong turbulence in the stratiform cloud layer. Malachite green (MG), a traditional agent used in aquaculture although is not approved; its low cost and high efficacy make illicit use likely. We developed a small‐scale, simple, and sensitive dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction procedure for the assay of trace amounts of MG in aquatic environment of Trout fish. Fiber optic‐linear array detection spectrophotometry with charge‐coupled device detector benefiting from a microcell was used for this purpose. The method is based on enhancement effect of an anionic surfactant on the extraction of MG in to very fine multidroplets of microextraction solvent which made assisted by disperser solvent. Under the optimum conditions, the enrichment factor 77.5 was obtained from a 5‐mL water sample. The calibration graph was linear up to 5 × 10?7 mol L?1 with detection limit of 1 × 10?8 mol L?1. The relative standard deviation for seven replicate measurements of 4 × 10?7 and 5 × 10?8 mol L?1 of MG were 3.3 and 4.5%, respectively. 相似文献
