Observing Metropolitan Atlanta,Georgia: Using an urban field study to enhance student experiences and instructor knowledge in urban geography

Abstract

In urban geography courses, knowledge of a local area is especially useful for demonstrating geographic principles. These classroom examples are further enhanced when students conduct their own field observations, with direction from the instructor. This paper describes a field study of the metropolitan Atlanta area that is used in an intermediate geography class, in which students compare their observations of Atlanta with urban geography models and theories. I argue that the preparation of the project, and the completion of it by students, represents a valuable firsthand observation experience for both the instructor and the students.

Abstract

Geography, long the neglected step-child in the field of social studies education, evinces signs of emerging as one of its key integrating elements. Its prominent inclusion and embellishment in both national and state standards and state assessments bodes well for its future. Higher education's role in this endeavor is paramount. The successful understanding, integration, and alignment of geography standards require the fashioning of exceptional university alliances. Inter-departmental mutuality of purpose and effort can, indeed, produce the next generation of caring and competent geography educators.     

Cartography and Population Geography as Current Events: A Case Study

Abstract

The Sanders housing lawsuit in Pennsylvania provides a case study of how to incorporate current events into the teaching of cartography or population geography at the high school or college level. Settlement of the Sanders case resulted in the release of information about the segregation of public housing by race in the Pittsburgh area. The issues in the Sanders case were mapped using publicly-accessible data, illustrating how an authentic lesson can be created with a minimum of resources.     

GIS专业创新实践教育模式探讨

以提高学生GIS实践能力、创新能力和就业竞争力为目标,分析GIS专业实践教育环节特点与需求,结合南京工业大学GIS专业办学特色,从改进GIS专业实践课程体系内容、营造GIS学社平台、建设校外创新实践基地等3个方面,探讨了GIS专业创新实践的教育模式。     

对当前测绘高等教育现状与测绘地理信息产业发展的几点思考

提出了当前测绘学科教学改革中存在的问题,并以测绘工程专业为例讨论了测绘学科专业人才的培养模式,最后对测绘地理信息产业发展做了评述。     

基于NewMap的教育地理信息系统的开发

以教育地理信息系统的设计和开发为例,全面阐述了系统设计的原则、总体结构,以及数据组织和功能实现过程。该系统基于NewMap开发,调用地理信息公共服务平台数据为教育资源的公众服务提供了新的途径,又很好地起到了数字城市建设中的示范应用作用。     

定向越野非体育教育专业组女子短距离赛研究——以云南省为例

采用文献资料、OCAD（定向运动制图）软件路线分析和China heath定向运动计时系统法。以2011年云南省第6届大学生运动会定向越野非体育教育专业组女子短距离赛决赛前8名运动员比赛时间为研究对象。分析运动员在分段时间中的技能执行能力,结果显示：运动员之间体能差距主要呈现3个层次、比赛结果竞争激烈,比赛时间差距明显;技能训练安排不够系统、运动员选材范围受到局限,缺乏高水平的定向运动队员;运动员对偏向瞄准技术尚未完全吃透、简化读图技术不能准确把握;缺乏高水平的教练员队伍;缺乏高水平的且具有实践经验的教练员队伍。     

Integration of Geospatial Science in Teacher Education

Abstract

One of the primary missions of our university is to train future primary and secondary teachers. Geospatial sciences, including GIS, have long been excluded from teacher education curriculum. This article explains the curriculum revisions undertaken to increase the geospatial technology education of future teachers. A general education class introducing geospatial technology to the general student body has been developed, a cartography class has been modified to provide applied geospatial experience explicitly for future teachers, and a service learning partnership with local K–12 schools has been established where students are working with teachers to integrate geospatial sciences in their academic programs.     

水库移民与科教兴库对策研究--以漫湾电站为例

漫湾水电站是云南省建国以来投资最大的国家重点建设项目。当时的“安置性移民”导致移民搬迁后总体上生活水平下降,贫困问题较为突出。只有通过实施科教兴库战略,才能解决漫湾的贫困问题。通过分析漫湾移民自身的优势条件和限制因素,提出了加强科教兴库的对策、措施:(1)重视移民的文化教育和技能培训;(2)增加库区科技含量;(3)提高库区集约化经营;(4)加强对移民的信息化管理。
