"The Island has been Handed over to Me": Ascension Island as a Company Colony, 1922–42

Ascension Island has spent almost all its years of organised human settlement as a military base. The major exception was between 1922 and 1942 when it was ruled by a civilian company, an unusual form of governance in modern colonial history. Though nominally subject to St Helena, and through that British colony to London, outside interference was largely restricted to rulings on colonial etiquette. The manager of the company was also head of both the government and legal systems. This paper considers the operation of this company colony, the tensions between the company and its workforce/subjects, and the contestation from 1942 for political supremacy between the company, the British state and the American forces that arrived when the island became involved in World War II. Ascension's narrative helps to exemplify some themes in postcolonial discourse and, given the unusual and extreme nature of the island's experiences, informatively broadens understanding of colonialism.     

Remote data analysis, visualization and problem solving environment (PSE) based on wavelets in the geosciences

We discuss here the issues faced by earth scientists in analyzing and visualizing large datasets over a GRID-like setup from a client-server perspective. We approach this problem by using a remote, web-based visualization and data analysis framework, called WEB-IS, and by employing second-generation wavelets as a means for reducing the amount of data transferred and for extracting coherent features in complex geophysical flows and surface faulting patterns. As an example, we describe how onboard processors on satellites can function as a server for beaming down extracted information to the client computer on the ground, thus exemplifying WEB-IS as a viable middleware on a GRID network for geosciences.Reviewed by: Prof. I.D. 三峡工程库区大多属中低山区，沟谷切割深、密度大，随着库区开发，不仅需补修淹没的公路，还将大量修筑新路。兴建公路、铁路势必大量开挖边坡、掘进隧道，从而产生边坡失稳、隧道塌顶和疏干地下水等环境地质问题。因此，防治地质灾害发生，对保护库区地质环境具有重要的现实意义。通过对三峡库区交通工程现状及今后发展引起的各种地质环境问题的实例分析，提出了环境地质预测及防治对策，为三峡库区可持续发展，提供了有价值的地质资料。     

地方小交通的构建与农村经济可持续发展研究——以江苏省为例

文章分析了地方小交通的内涵。指出小交通具有以公路为主导，等级低，密度大，交通流量小，自由式道路多等特征。在大交通发达。乡镇合并和农村社会经济迅速发展的背景下，地方小交通具有互补大交通。促进城乡整合及拉动农村发展的重要功能，同时分析了江苏省地方交通的发展现状，指出了存在问题，然后针对不足，提出加强规划，建管养结合，适度超前，模式多样，系统协调等总体构建原则和地方公路及港口的具体布局设想，以促进地方小交通与农村经济可持续发展。
