Abstract. Biotic zonation and severe impoverishment of benthic macrofauna are two of the most conspicuous features of submarine caves. The prevailing explanation assumes trophic depletion caused by reduction of water flow. However, no isolation of water was found in the studied Catalan submarine cave, even in the wall microlayer. Fluorescein diffusion was so fast that it was detectable everywhere in the cave already only a few minutes after the injection. The rate of dissolution of plaster spheres was even greater in the cave than in a nearby tunnel – without benthic macrofauna impoverishment – showing a considerable water flow. The oxygen concentration of water in dialysis bags placed at varying distances from the cave walls showed that no wall microlayer gradients were present.
Biochemical gradients did not indicate any decrease in food supply. Although photosynthetic pigment concentration generally decreased inside the cave, and although the gradients were not linear but formed different patterns throughout the cave, the BOD5 , the POM, the C:N ratio, the [3 H]-thymidine incorporation rate, and the ETS activity were higher in the inner part of the cave. There was an accumulation of detritic material and bacteria in the inner parts that constitute a plausible food supply for benthic macrofauna.
If neither water motion nor food supply can be invoked, research into the causes of zonation and disappearence of benthic macrofauna is proposed to be carried out on biotic interactions and behavioural processes. 相似文献

What does it mean to reflect upon space in connection to telecommunications? If we start with a conception of urban space as being fully integrated, including on an equal footing both information and communication technologies (ICT) and mobility techniques, as well as the founding notion of copresence that we find at the heart of all urban organization, we might then be able to examine the notion of the ‘digital divide’ in a new light. This clearly experimental approach is conducted by a research group called ‘Urbatic’, which is composed of geographers who, for the last three years, have been conducting theoretical research whose objective is to take into account two fields of social science: the theory of urbanity and the theory of telecommunication. Surveys conducted in this perspective focus on the analysis of the choices people make between the different means they can use to cope with distances (copresence, mobility and telecommunication) with a view to constructing their own space. The analysis of these choices leads us to propose a new theorized interpretation of the ‘digital divide’. 相似文献

Abstract Scapolite, wollastonite, calcite, diopside, grossular-andradite garnet and sphene occur in calc-silicate rocks in the granulite terrain of the Arunta Block, central Australia. This assemblage buffers the CO2 activity at a low value, so that any coexisting fluid phase must be H2 O rich and CO2 poor ( X co2 = 0.2-0.3). In contrast, the H2 O activity in the surrounding felsic and mafic granulites was low. Thus fluid activities during granulite facies metamorphism were locally buffered in various rock units and fluid flow appears to have been restricted or fluid may have been absent. Late retrograde rims of garnet and garnet-quartz separate phases formed in the high-grade stage. Formation of these rims would have required either an influx of water-rich fluid or a decrease in pressure. Evidence from the surrounding granulites shows that in one locality, the calc-silicate rocks had undergone late isobaric hydration; in another locality, minor uplift had occurred soon after peak P-T conditions. In both, scapolite had partly broken down to plagioclase-calite. A calc silicate rock from the granulite terrain of Enderby Land, Antarctica, contains scapolite, wollastonite, calcite, diopside, quartz and sphene; this assemblage also indicates low CO2 activities. In this rock, wollastonite has broken down to calcite-quartz, to indicate isobaric cooling without influx of hydrous fluid. 相似文献
