An atmosphere containing 0.5 cm atm of ammonia is assumed on Io. Such an atmosphere will be frozen at the unilluminated pole during the solstices, but will evaporate at the equinoctial seasons. The ammonia atmosphere will explain: (1) the posteclipse brightenings and their observed times of occurrence and nonocurrence; (2) the observed departure from a two-layer model beating curve upon emergence from eclipse; (3) the discordant temperatures obtained at 10 and 20 μm; and (4) discordant temperatures obtained at 10 and 20 μm during the total phase of an eclipse by Jupiter.In order to explain items 3 and 4 above, a proton flux in Jupiter's magnetosphere of 1.1 × 109 cm?2s? at an energy of 0.5MeV at io's distance from Jupiter is assumed. This flux is 40 times the flux in Divine's (1972) “upper-limit” model of the Jovian radiation belts, while the proton energy is eight times less. The proton flux, plus the solar ultraviolet and infrared flux absorbed by the ammonia, will heat the atmosphere to 245 ± 10°K. At this temperature the occultation atmospheric upper limit allows the addition of 4 cmatm of nitrogen.  相似文献

Abstract– Larkman Nunatak (LAR) 06299 is a vesicular LL chondrite impact melt breccia that cooled rapidly (0.1–0.3 °C s?1) during crystallization. Ar‐Ar data from the literature indicate that the impact event that formed this rock occurred approximately 1 Ga ago. About 30 vol% of the meteorite consists of a melt matrix containing faceted and intergrown mafic silicate grains (mainly 4–11 μm size olivine phenocrysts) partially to completely surrounded by 2–20 μm size patches of plagioclase. Suspended in the melt are 30–370 μm size ellipsoidal to spheroidal metal‐sulfide nodules (several hundred per thin section), many connected to 8–600 μm size ellipsoidal to spheroidal vesicles. Most of the metal‐sulfide nodules contain a large oblate metallic Fe‐Ni bleb at one end of the nodule. For approximately 90% of the nodules, the metal blebs are aligned on the same side of the nodules; for approximately 80% of the nodules that are adjacent to vesicles, the vesicles are attached to the opposite end of the nodules from the oblate metal blebs. Most of the oblate metal blebs themselves are flattened in a direction perpendicular to the long axis of the nodule/vesicle. These features result from alignment in the gravitational field on the LL parent asteroid, making LAR 06299 the first known chondrite to indicate gravitational direction. Using reasonable estimates of the cooling rate, viscosity of the metal‐sulfide melt, and asteroid density, as well as the observed sizes of constituent phases in LAR 06299, we obtain a lower limit of approximately 1.5 km for the radius of the LAR 06299 parent body. Experiments are described in which pyrite is synthesized at room temperature and atmospheric pressure from hydrated iron oxides and hydrogen sulphide under conditions similar to those expected in the natural environment. This synthesis differs from earlier work in that oxygen was rigorously excluded from the system and the pH was 5.6. During a later ageing period a reaction appears to take place in which iron monosulphide is converted to pyrite at pH 5.85.
Zusammenfassung Versuche zur Synthese von Pyrit bei Raumtemperatur unter atmosphärischem Druck, ausgehend von Eisenhydroxiden und Schwefelwasserstoff und somit unter gleichen Verhältnissen, wie in natürlicher Umgebung, werden beschrieben.Die Synthese unterscheidet sich von früheren Arbeiten durch den strengen Ausschluß von Sauerstoff und den pH-Wert von 5.6. In einer darauffolgenden Alterungsperiode scheint eine Reaktion einzusetzen, in der Eisenmonosulfid bei pH 5.85 zu Pyrit umgewandelt wird.

Turbulent wall pressure data acquired during tests of a full-scale experimental towed array over a range of tow speeds in straight tows and turns is presented. The experimental towed array contained a linear array of sensors mounted at the fluid–solid interface to measure the spectra of the wall pressure fluctuations due to the cylindrical turbulent boundary layer. The physics are dominated by the growth of a thick, high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layer at arc length Reynolds numbers as high as 9×108. The measured wavenumber-frequency spectra, autospectra, cross-spectral decay and convection velocities are presented. A well-defined convective ridge exists in the wavenumber-frequency spectra obtained during straight tows and turns. Turns give rise to a complicated fluid–structure interaction problem, but do not lead to the separation of the turbulent boundary layer. As the array moves through a turn, flow-induced vibrations of the array are shown to dominate the spectra at low frequencies, with more rapid decay in the measured coherence occurring at higher frequencies. The use of tow speed as a velocity scale is shown to collapse autospectra and convection velocities.  相似文献

Over the last 12600 years, lake levels in the eastern Lake Erie basin have fluctuated dramatically, causing major changes in drainage patterns, flooding and draining ephemeral Lake Wainfleet several times and widening and narrowing the Niagara Gorge as the erosive effects of Niagara Falls waxed and waned. The control sill for Lake Erie levels was at first the Fort Erie/Buffalo sill, before the Lyell/Johnson sill in Niagara Falls took over due to isostatic rebound. This sill, in time, was eventually eroded by the recession of Niagara Falls and the Fort Erie/Buffalo sill regained control. The environmental picture is complicated by catastrophic outbursts from glacial Lake Agassiz and Lake Barlow-Ojibway, changes in outlet routes, isostatic rebound and climatic changes over the Great Lakes basins. Today, the flow of water into Lake Erie from the streams and rivers surrounding it only accounts for about 13% of the flow out of it, therefore, the importance of flow from the Upper Great Lakes, specifically the flow from Lake Huron, has a great effect on Lake Erie levels. While the changing control sills, Lyell/Johnson and Buffalo/Fort Erie would affect Lake Erie levels, overall they are mostly input driven by the amount of waters received from the Upper Great Lakes. Since Lake Erie's water level changes are so closely tied to Lake Huron's water level changes we have decided to use names assigned to Lake Huron such as the two Mattawa highstands and three Stanley lowstands rather than inflict a whole new set of names on the public. While the duration of each high and lowstand in Erie and Huron may not always be the same, they always happen within the same time frame. The datum elevations used for Lake Huron (175.8 m) and Lake Erie (173.3 m) are historically recorded averages. The Lake Erie levels proposed in this paper reflect Lake Hurons effects on Lake Erie and the levels occuring at the eastern end of the Erie Basin throughout the last 12600 years. All dates in this paper are uncorrected 14 C dates unless the date was obtained from shells, then the date has been corrected for hard-water effects. Also, all heights are given as modern day elevations and are not adjusted for isostatic rebound.  相似文献

Recent work suggesting that fisheries depletions have turned the corner is misplaced because analysis was based largely on fisheries from better-managed developed-world fisheries. Some indicators of status show improvements in the minority of fisheries subjected to formal assessment. Other indicators, such as trophic level and catch time series, have been controversial. Nevertheless, several deeper analyses of the status of the majority of world fisheries confirm the previous dismal picture: serious depletions are the norm world-wide, management quality is poor, catch per effort is still declining. The performance of stock assessment itself may stand challenged by random environmental shifts and by the need to accommodate ecosystem-level effects. The global picture for further fisheries species extinctions, the degradation of ecosystem food webs and seafood security is indeed alarming. Moreover, marine ecosystems and their embedded fisheries are challenged in parallel by climate change, acidification, metabolic disruptors and other pollutants. Attempts to remedy the situation need to be urgent, focused, innovative and global.  相似文献

Using available information on the accretion rates and the bulk chemical compositions of oceanic ferromanganese nodules, it can be shown that the accumulation rate of manganese is proportional to the square of the accumulation rate of iron. This relationship has been used to derive an equation that predicts nodule growth rates from their chemical compositions. The equation accurately predicts growth rates up to about 50 mm/106 yr, but yields incorrect rates for faster-growing concretions. From this relationship nodules underneath water of high primary productivity grow most rapidly and accumulate transition metals most rapidly; however, nodules from regions of highest primary productivity do not have the highest concentrations of nickel and copper. Reduction of manganese within the sediment column and remobilization of a fraction to the surface sediments adds manganese to nodules without substantially augmenting the supply of other transition elements. The addition of remobilized manganese to the nodule dilutes the concentrations of nickel, copper and iron, even though their rates of accumulation are also high.  相似文献
