Fluctuating plume models provide a useful conceptual paradigm in the understanding of plume dispersion in a turbulent flow. In particular, these models have enabled analytical predictions of higher-order concentration moments, and the form of the one-point concentration probability density function (PDF). In this paper, we extend the traditional formalism of these models, grounded in the theory of homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow, to two cases: namely, a simple sheared boundary layer and a large array of regular obstacles. Some very high-resolution measurements of plume dispersion in a water channel, obtained using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) line-scan techniques are utilised. These data enable us to extract time series of plume centroid position (plume meander) and dispersion in the relative frame of reference in unprecedented detail. Consequently, experimentally extracted PDFs are able to be directly compared with various theoretical forms proposed in the literature. This includes the PDF of plume centroid motion, the PDF of concentration in the relative frame, and a variety of concentration moments in the absolute and relative frames of reference. The analysis confirms the accuracy of some previously proposed functional forms of model components used in fluctuating plume models, as well as suggesting some new forms necessary to deal with the complex boundary conditions in the spatial domain.  相似文献

Present-day (1979–2003) and future (2075–2099) simulations of mean and extreme rainfall and temperature are examined using data from the Meteorological Research Institute super-high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model. Analyses are performed over the 20-km model grid for (1) a main Caribbean basin, (2) sub-regional zones, and (3) specific Caribbean islands. Though the model’s topography underestimates heights over the eastern Caribbean, it captures well the present-day spatial and temporal variations of seasonal and annual climates. Temperature underestimations range from 0.1 °C to 2 °C with respect to the Japanese Reanalysis and the Climatic Research Unit datasets. The model also captures fairly well sub-regional scale variations in the rainfall climatology. End-of-century projections under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change SRES A1B scenario indicate declines in rainfall amounts by 10–20 % for most of the Caribbean during the early (May–July) and late (August–October) rainy seasons relative to the 1979–2003 baselines. The early dry season (November–January) is also projected to get wetter in the far north and south Caribbean by approximately 10 %. The model also projects a warming of 2–3 °C over the Caribbean region. Analysis of future climate extremes indicate a 5–10 % decrease in the simple daily precipitation intensity but no significant change in the number of consecutive dry days for Cuba, Jamaica, southern Bahamas, and Haiti. There is also indication that the number of hot days and nights will significantly increase over the main Caribbean basin.  相似文献

There is increased interest in the potential of tree planting to help mitigate flooding using nature-based solutions or natural flood management. However, many publications based upon catchment studies conclude that, as flood magnitude increases, benefit from forest cover declines and is insignificant for extreme flood events. These conclusions conflict with estimates of evaporation loss from forest plot observations of gross rainfall, through fall and stem flow. This study explores data from existing studies to assess the magnitudes of evaporation and attempts to identify the meteorological conditions under which they would be supported. This is achieved using rainfall event data collated from publications and data archives from studies undertaken in temperate environments around the world. The meteorological conditions required to drive the observed evaporation losses are explored theoretically using the Penman–Monteith equation. The results of this theoretical analysis are compared with the prevailing meteorological conditions during large and extreme rainfall events in mountainous regions of the United Kingdom to assess the likely significance of wet canopy evaporation loss. The collated dataset showed that event Ewc losses between approximately 2 and 38% of gross rainfall (1.5 to 39.4 mm day−1) have been observed during large rainfall events (up to 118 mm day−1) and that there are few data for extreme events (>150 mm day−1). Event data greater than 150 mm (reported separately) included similarly high percentage evaporation losses. Theoretical estimates of wet-canopy evaporation indicated that, to reproduce the losses towards the high end of these observations, relative humidity and the aerodynamic resistance for vapour transport needed to be lower than approximately 97.5% and 0.5 to 2 s m−1 respectively. Surface meteorological data during large and extreme rainfall events in the United Kingdom suggest that conditions favourable for high wet-canopy evaporation are not uncommon and indicate that significant evaporation losses during large and extreme events are possible but not for all events and not at all locations. Thus the disparity with the results from catchment studies remains.  相似文献

The magnesium isotopic compositions of 26 hibonite-bearing inclusions from the CM chondrite Murchison, as well as isotopic measurements on a subset of these samples for oxygen, titanium, and lithium-beryllium-boron are reported along with oxygen isotopic data for an additional 13 hibonites that were previously investigated for other isotope systems (magnesium, potassium, calcium, and titanium) and rare earth element concentrations. Magnesium isotopic compositions divide CM hibonites into two distinct populations which correlate perfectly with their mineralogy and morphology, as previously discovered by Ireland [Ireland T. R. (1988) Correlated morphological, chemical, and isotopic characteristics of hibonites from the Murchison carbonaceous chondrite. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta52, 2827-2839]: Spinel-HIBonite spherules (SHIBs) bear evidence of in situ26Al decay, whereas PLAty-Crystals (PLACs) and Blue AGgregates (BAGs) either lack resolvable 26Mg-excesses or exhibit 26Mg deficits by up to ∼4‰. High precision, multiple collector SIMS analyses show that 6 of 7 SHIBs investigated fall on a single correlation line implying 26Al/27Al = (4.5 ± 0.2) × 10−5 at the time of isotopic closure, consistent with the “canonical” 26Al abundance characteristic of internal isochrons in many calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs). One SHIB sample exhibits Δ26Mg consistent with a “supracanonical” 26Al/27Al ratio of (6.4 ± 0.5) × 10−5. The PLAC hibonites contain highly anomalous titanium isotopic compositions, with δ50Ti values ranging from −80‰ to almost +200‰, whereas SHIBs generally lack large Ti isotopic anomalies.Eight out of 11 26Al-free PLAC hibonite grains record 10B/11B excesses that correlate with Be/B; the inferred initial 10Be/9Be ratio of (5.1 ± 1.4) × 10−4 is lower than the best-constrained 10Be/9Be of (8.8 ± 0.6) × 10−4 in a CV CAI. The data demonstrate that 10Be cannot be used as a relative chronometer for these objects and that most of the 10Be observed in CAIs must be produced by irradiation of precursor solids in the early solar system. The lack of 26Al in PLAC hibonites indicates that significant amounts of 26Al were not formed in the same spallogenic processes that made 10Be in PLAC precursors. This is most easily understood as indicating very early formation of the PLAC hibonites, prior to the incorporation and mixing of 26Al into the solar nebula, although an alternative scenario, which invokes irradiation under different solar flare conditions, cannot be ruled out. Lithium isotopes are normal within uncertainties, probably reflecting contamination and/or postcrystallization exchange.The oxygen isotopic compositions of SHIBs and PLACs are all highly 16O-enriched, but are not derived from a homogeneous reservoir: Δ17O values span a range of ∼−28‰ to −15‰. The ranges of 16O-enrichment in SHIBs and PLACs overlap and are less “anomalous” than the most 16O-enriched compositions found in meteorites [Kobayashi S., Imai H. and Yurimoto H. (2003) New extreme 16O-rich chondrule in the early solar system. Geochem. J.37, 663-669]. Both PLACs and SHIBs formed in 16O-enriched reservoirs characterized by small-scale heterogeneities in the gas phase. If such heterogeneities were generated by an admixture of relatively 16O-poor gas created by self-shielding during CO photolysis and transported to the hot inner regions of the accretion disk, then this process must have been initiated very early on, prior to the arrival of fresh radioactivity into the inner solar system. Oxygen isotope heterogeneities persisted throughout the formation interval of PLACs, CAI precursors, and SHIBs which could be as long as 3 × 105 years based on 26Al records.One SHIB and one BAG exhibit mass fractionated oxygen isotopic compositions similar to those seen in FUN inclusions and in several platy hibonite crystals [Lee T., Mayeda T. K. and Clayton R. N. (1980) Oxygen isotopic anomalies in Allende inclusion HAL. Geophys. Res. Lett.7, 493-496; Ireland T. R., Zinner E. K., Fahey A. J. and Esat T. M. (2007) A FUN-like hibonite inclusion with a large 26Mg-excess. Earth Planet. Sci. Lett.254, 115-126]. The suite of mass-fractionated hibonites exhibit a range of isotopic properties, including 26Al/27Al ratios from below detection to a “canonical” level and oxygen and titanium anomalies that are not exceptional by PLAC standards. This suggests that F (fractionation) processes—evaporation under (oxidizing) conditions—are not necessarily associated with sampling a special isotopic reservoir.  相似文献

Stereochemical changes of triterpanes present in extracts from an immature oil shale sequence intruded by a 3-m dolerite sill have been studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The steric configuration of the hopanes was observed to change from one dominated by the thermally less stable 17β(H), 21β(H) configuration at some distance from the intrusion, to one dominated by the thermally more stable 17α(H), 21β(H) and 17β(H), 21α(H) configurating in the immediate vicinity of the intrusion. In addition, severe alteration of the kerogen appeared to have taken place as a result of the contact metamorphism, and high concentrations of extractable organic matter were observed below the intrusion. Characterization of the kerogens by Curie-point pyrolysis has enabled the effects of the intrusion on the shales to be monitored.  相似文献

The evolution in X-ray properties of early-type galaxies is largely unconstrained. In particular, little is known about how, and if, remnants of mergers generate hot gas haloes. Here we examine the relationship between X-ray luminosity and galaxy age for a sample of early-type galaxies. Comparing normalized X-ray luminosity to three different age indicators, we find that L X L B increases with age, suggesting an increase in X-ray halo mass with time after the last major star formation episode of a galaxy. The long-term nature of this trend, which appears to continue across the full age range of our sample, poses a challenge for many models of hot halo formation. We conclude that models involving a declining rate of type Ia supernovae, and a transition from outflow to inflow of the gas originally lost by galactic stars, offer the most promising explanation for the observed evolution in X-ray luminosity.  相似文献

The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP (NGRIP) contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene–Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision. This climatic event is most clearly reflected in an abrupt shift in deuterium excess values, accompanied by more gradual changes in δ18O, dust concentration, a range of chemical species, and annual layer thickness. A timescale based on multi‐parameter annual layer counting provides an age of 11 700 calendar yr b2 k (before AD 2000) for the base of the Holocene, with a maximum counting error of 99 yr. A proposal that an archived core from this unique sequence should constitute the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Holocene Series/Epoch (Quaternary System/Period) has been ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences. The effects of non-uniform plasma target ionisation on the spectrum of thick-target HXR bremsstrahlung from a non-thermal electron beam are analysed. In particular the effect of the target ionisation structure on beam collisional energy losses, and hence on inversion of an observed photon spectrum to yield the electron injection spectrum, is considered and results compared with those obtained under the usual assumption of a fully ionised target.The problem is formulated and solved in principle for a general target ionisation structure, then discussed in detail for the case of a step function distribution of ionisation with column depth as an approximation to the sharp coronal–chromospheric step structure in solar flare plasmas. It is found that such ionisation structure has very dramatic effects on derivation of the thick-target electron injection spectrum F0(E0) as compared with the result F*0(E 0) obtained under the usual assumption of a fully ionised target: (a) Inferred F*0 contain more electrons than F 0 and in some cases include electrons at energies where none are actually present. Although the total (energy-integrated) beam fluxes in the two cases do not differ by a factor of more than Aee/AeH, the spectral shapes can differ greatly over finite energy intervals resulting in the danger of misleading results for total fluxes obtained by extrapolation. (b) The unconstrained mathematical solution for F0 for any photon spectrum is never unique, while that for F*0 is unique. When the physical constraint F0 0 is added, for some photon spectra solutions for F0 may not exist or may not be unique. (This is not an effect of noise but of real analytic ambiguity.) (c) For data corresponding to F*0 with a low-energy cut-off, or a cut-off or rapid enough exponential decline at high energies, a unique solution F0 does exist and we obtain a recursive summation for its evaluation.Consequently, in future work on the inversion of HXR bremsstrahlung spectra it will be vital for algorithms to include the effects of target ionisation if spurious results on thick-target electron spectra are not to be inferred. Finally it is pointed out that the depth of the transition zone, and its evaporative evolution during flares may be derivable from its effect on the HXR spectrum.  相似文献
