The construction of S-wave velocity models of marine sediments down to hundreds of meters below the seafloor is important in a number of disciplines. One of the most significant trends in marine geophysics is to use interface waves to estimate shallow shear velocities which play an important role in determining the shallow crustal structure. In marine settings, the waves trapped near the fluid–solid interface are called Scholte waves, and this is the subject of the study. In 1998, there were experiments on the Ninetyeast Ridge (Central Indian Ocean) to study the shallow seismic structure at the drilled site. The data were acquired by both ocean bottom seismometer and ocean bottom hydrophone. A new type of seafloor implosion sources has been used in this experiment, which successfully excited fast and high frequency (>500 Hz) body waves and slow, intermediate frequency (<20 Hz) Scholte waves. The fundamental and first higher mode Scholte waves have both been excited by the implosion source. Here, the Scholte waves are investigated with a full waveform modeling and a group velocity inversion approach. Shear wave velocities for the uppermost layers of the region are inferred and results from the different methods are compared. We find that the full waveform modeling is important to understand the intrinsic attenuation of the Scholte waves between 1 and 20 Hz. The modeling shows that the S-wave velocity varies from 195 to 350 m/s in the first 16 m of the uppermost layer. Depths levels of high S-wave impedance contrasts compare well to the layer depth derived from a P-wave analysis as well as from drilling data. As expected, the P- to S-wave velocity ratio is very high in the uppermost 16 m of the seafloor and the Poisson ratio is nearly 0.5. Depth levels of high S-wave impedance contrasts are comparable to the layer depth derived from drilling data.  相似文献

To understand the processes and energy dissipation performance caused by turbulence during the wave run-up over a stepped revetment, hydraulic model tests with steady flow conditions are conducted and correlated with unsteady flow conditions of the wave run-up within a short time frame. Under irregular waves, the run-up reduction over a stepped revetment is dependent on the Iribarren number and decreases for decreasing Iribarren numbers. Velocity gradients are found to be similar in a steady and unsteady flow regime near the pseudo-bottom.  相似文献

We studied the internal lake processes that control the spatial distribution and characteristics of modern sediments at the ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) deep drilling site in Laguna Potrok Aike, southern Patagonia, Argentina. Sediment distribution patterns were investigated using a dense grid of 63 gravity cores taken throughout the lake basin and 40 additional shoreline samples. Analysis of the surficial sediment distribution points to distinct internal depositional dynamics induced by wind-driven lake internal currents. Distribution maps illustrate that the spatial characteristics of analysed variables are linked to high erosional wave activity. Persistent wave action and littoral erosion along all shores, especially the eastern shore, is caused by prevailing Southern Hemispheric Westerlies. Several sediment variables (grain size, benthic diatoms, total inorganic carbon and calcium) indicate re-suspension of littoral sediment followed by re-distribution to profundal accumulation areas near the eastern shore. Variations within the catchment influence sediment characteristics in the north-eastern bay. That area is characterized by different mineralogical and sedimentological conditions as well as greater accumulation of pollen, inorganic carbon and diatoms. These findings are related to the influence of episodic inflow into this bay. Spatial differences in stable isotope values throughout the lake suggest that ephemeral tributaries around the lake basin may also contribute to the detected spatial sediment variations.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine whether wallrocks around the Twin Creeks Carlin-type gold deposits exhibit oxygen isotope haloes similar to those found around other types of hydrothermal deposits. Mineralization at Twin Creeks is hosted by Ordovician Sequence shales containing some carbonate minerals and by Pennsylvanian–Permian Etchart Formation limestone. Analysis of orthophosphate-soluble carbonate from these rocks shows that oxygen isotope haloes are detectable in Ordovician Sequence shales but not in Etchart Formation limestone. The soluble fraction of Ordovician Sequence shales at Twin Creeks has δ18O values of 12 to 24‰ and δ13C values of 0 to −10‰. Most samples fall along a poorly defined trend that extends from δ18O of about 24‰ and δ13C values of about 0, which are typical of unaltered limestones, toward lower values for both isotope systems, which are typical of rocks that have undergone alteration by hydrothermal fluids. Plots of these values along two sections through the ore body show that δ18O values of wallrocks are lowest in the ore zone and increase outward, forming a halo several hundred meters in size. In the same plots, δ13C values of the wallrocks do not show systematic spatial variations. The soluble fraction of Etchart Formation limestones at Twin Creeks have δ18O values of 25 to 5‰ and δ13C values of 4 to −10‰, but do not show any systematic spatial variation relative to mineralization at the scale of our samples. Failure of the Etchart Formation samples to show detectable haloes is probably related to deposition of post-ore carbonate minerals or lower ore fluid : rock ratios. Material balance calculations used to model the isotopic composition of average Ordovician Sequence shales indicate that changes in temperature and water : rock ratio were probably not sufficient to account for the wide range of isotope compositions observed in these rocks. The most likely additional factor contributing to this range of values was a change in the composition of the altering fluid, probably by mixing of the ore fluid with surrounding meteoric water. These results suggest that Carlin-type gold deposits are surrounded by haloes of low δ18O values, but that detection of these haloes could be complicated by local compositional variations and post-ore modification of the wallrocks.  相似文献

Complete chemical analyses, including ferric and ferrous iron, H2O contents and δD values for 16 phlogopite and biotite and 2 hornblende separates are presented. Samples were obtained from volcanic rocks from four localities: (1) phlogopite phenocrysts from minette lavas from the western Mexico continental arc, (2) biotite and hornblende phenocrysts from andesite lavas from Mono Basin, California, (3) phlogopite and biotite from clinopyroxenite nodules entrained in potassic lavas from the East African Rift, Uganda, and (4) phlogopite phenocrysts from a wyomingite lava in the Leucite Hills, Wyoming. The Fe2O3 contents in the micas range from 0.8 to 10.5 wt%, corresponding to 0.09 to 1.15 Fe3+ per formula unit (pfu). Water contents vary from 1.6 to 3.0 wt%, corresponding to 1.58 to 3.04 OH pfu, significantly less than would be expected for a site fully occupied by hydroxyl. Cation- and anion-based normalization procedures provide accurate mineral formulae with respect to most cations and anions, but are unable to generate accurate estimates of Fe3+/FeT, and overestimate OH at the expense of O on the hydroxyl site. These inaccuracies are present despite acceptable adjusted totals and stoichiometric calculated site occupancies. The phlogopite and biotite phenocrysts in arc-related lavas from western Mexico and eastern California have the highest Fe3+/FeT ratios (56–87%), reflecting high magmatic oxygen fugacities (ΔNNO = +2 to +5), in contrast to those from Uganda (25–40%) and the Leucite Hills (23%). There is no correlation between the OH content and the Fe3+/FeT ratio in the micas. Values of KMg/Fe2+D (± 2σ errors) were calculated for three phlogopite-olivine pairs (0.12 ± 0.12, 0.26 ± 0.14, 0.09 ± 0.12), two biotite-hornblende pairs (0.73 ± 0.08 and 1.22 ± 0.10) and a single phlogopite-augite pair (1.15 ± 0.12). Values of KF/OHD for two biotite and hornblende pairs could not be determined without significant error because of the extremely low F contents (< 0.2 wt%) of the four phases. The δD values obtained in this study encompass a large range (−137 to −43‰). The phlogopite and biotite separates from Uganda have δD values of −70 to −49‰, which overlap those believed to represent “primary” mantle. There is a larger range in δD values (−137 to −43‰) for phlogopite phenocrysts from western Mexico minette lavas, although their range in δ18O values (5.2–6.2‰) is consistent with “normal” mantle. It is unlikely, therefore, that the variable δD values reflect heterogeneity in the mantle source region of the minette magmas. Nor can the extremely low δD values reflect degassing of H2 or H2O since almost 100% loss of dissolved water in the magma is required, an unrealistic scenario given the stability of the hydrous phenocrysts. The very low δD values of the Mascota minette phlogopites require that the hydrogen be introduced from an external source (e.g., meteoric water). Whatever the process responsible for the observed hydrogen isotope composition, it had no effect on the δ18O value, f O 2, a H 2O or bulk composition of the host magmas. One of the most-outstanding problems in the gravitational collapse scenario of early structure formation is the cooling of primordial gas to allow for small-mass objects to form. As the neutral primordial gas is a poor radiator at temperatures   T ≤ 104 K  , molecular hydrogen is needed for further cooling down to temperatures   T ∼ 100 K  . The formation of molecular hydrogen is catalyzed by the presence of free electrons, which could be provided by the ionization due to an early population of cosmic rays (CRs). In order to investigate this possibility, we developed a code to study the effects of ionizing CRs on the thermal and chemical evolution of primordial gas. We found that CRs can provide enough free electrons needed for the formation of molecular hydrogen, and therefore can increase the cooling ability of such primordial gas under following conditions. A dissociating photon flux with   F < 10−18 erg cm−2 Hz−1 s−1  , initial temperature of the gas  ∼103 K  , total gas number densities   n ≥ 1 cm−3  , and cosmic-ray sources with     .  相似文献

During the forthcoming years, ESO will implement a large number of CCDs in optical instruments for the Paranal and La Silla observatories. An important step in this process is the CCD characterization and optimization that is done after the device is received from the manufacturer. In order to accommodate the new large CCDs and to interface to the new FIERA controller, ESO is building a new CCD testing facility in Garching. Among the measurements that will be made with this new facility are: quantum efficiency, conversion factor, charge transfer efficiency, dark current, read out noise and cosmetic quality.  相似文献

The volcanogenic lake Laguna Potrok Aike, Santa Cruz, Argentina, reveals an unprecedented continuous high resolution climatic record for the steppe regions of southern Patagonia. With the applied multi-proxy approach rapid climatic changes before the turn of the first millennium were detected followed by medieval droughts which are intersected by moist and/or cold periods of varying durations and intensities. The total inorganic carbon content was identified as a sensitive lake level indicator. This proxy suggests that during the late Middle Ages (ca. AD 1230–1410) the lake level was rather low representing a signal of the Medieval Climate Anomaly in southeastern Patagonia. At the beginning of the Little Ice Age the lake level rose considerably staying on a high level during the whole period. Subsequently, the lake level lowered again in the course of the 20th century.  相似文献

Dispersed quartz veinlets in Proterozoic enderbitic charnockite from Tromøy, Bamble sector (southern Norway), with Ti-concentrations of mostly 80–180 ppm, produce bright blue cathodoluminescence (CL), against contrasting micro-textures of secondary pure quartz with low CL intensity. The textures comprise grain boundary alteration, healed micro-fractures, patches of secondary quartz, and euhedral quartz nuclei. The secondary quartz locally makes up 50% of the total quartz. Trace element analysis has been done by electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA), laser-induced coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS), and additional electron-paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. These studies testify systematic trace element reduction and extensive quartz recovery during retrograde metamorphism. We assume healing of a part of the aqueous fluid inclusions during a late thermal event, possible correlated with Paleozoic magmatic activity in the Oslo-Rift. During final cooling, aqueous fluids were largely retrapped in patches of secondary quartz associated with healed fractures, whereas carbonic inclusions (without secondary quartz) may have survived retrograde metamorphism. The variable but generally high salinity of fluid inclusions is assumed to be in part the result of quartz recovery by which ion concentrations were increased in the percentage range.Editorial Responsibility: J.
