Effective natural resource management requires interrelated technical practices and social arrangements that are appropriate
to a region’s biophysical characteristics and that address protection and sustainable management of resources. This is illustrated
from our experience in the Republic of Niger, West Africa. In 1980 barren plains, infertile soils, drought, dust storms, severe
fodder shortages, and agricultural pest outbreaks were normal occurrences in Niger’s rural regions. In general, despite large
investments of time and funding, conventional reforestation efforts had little impact. However by 2008 over five million hectares
of once barren land had been transformed through wide adoption of an agroforestry method known as ‘Farmer Managed Natural
Regeneration’ (FMNR), introduced in 1983. In the Aguie Department, the practice of FMNR was formalized through the Desert
Community Initiative (DCI), addressing interrelated technical and social issues in resource management. New governance structures,
which include marginalized groups, implement monitoring and enforcement systems enabling communities to manage land and regenerating
trees. These, together with technical solutions that build on local knowledge and skills and use previously undervalued indigenous
tree species, have generated a sustainable fuel-wood market for the first time. Increased linkage and compatibility between
institutions at local and national levels and strengthened social capital have been crucial to these impacts. Food security
and community resilience to drought have been markedly enhanced and local incomes have increased. The experience provides
important lessons for approaches to addressing environmental degradation and poverty in other semi arid areas and facilitating
the spread and adoption of new agroforestry systems. 相似文献

XMM–Newton X-ray spectra of the hard state black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) SWIFT J1753.5−0127 and GX 339−4 show evidence for accretion disc blackbody emission, in addition to hard power laws. The soft and hard band power spectral densities (PSDs) of these sources demonstrate variability over a wide range of time-scales. However, on time-scales of tens of seconds, corresponding to the putative low-frequency Lorentzian in the PSD, there is additional power in the soft band. To interpret this behaviour, we introduce a new spectral analysis technique, the 'covariance spectrum', to disentangle the contribution of the X-ray spectral components to variations on different time-scales. We use this technique to show that the disc blackbody component varies on all time-scales, but varies more, relative to the power law, on longer time-scales. This behaviour explains the additional long-term variability seen in the soft band. Comparison of the blackbody and iron line normalizations seen in the covariance spectra in GX 339−4 implies that the short-term blackbody variations are driven by thermal reprocessing of the power-law continuum absorbed by the disc. However, since the amplitude of variable reflection is the same on long and short time-scales, we rule out reprocessing as the cause of the enhanced disc variability on long time-scales. Therefore, we conclude that the long time-scale blackbody variations are caused by instabilities in the disc itself, in contrast to the stable discs seen in BHXRB soft states. Our results provide the first observational evidence that the low-frequency Lorentzian feature present in the PSD is produced by the accretion disc. 相似文献

We discuss the optical properties, X-ray detections and active galactic nucleus (AGN) populations of four clusters at z ∼ 1 in the Subaru–XMM Deep Field (SXDF). The velocity distribution and plausible extended X-ray detections are examined, as well as the number of X-ray point sources and radio sources associated with the clusters. We find that the two clusters that appear virialized and have an extended X-ray detection contain few, if any, AGN, whereas the two pre-virialized clusters have a large AGN population. This constitutes evidence that the AGN fraction in clusters is linked to the clusters' evolutionary stage. The number of X-ray AGN in the pre-virialized clusters is consistent with an overdensity of a factor of ∼200; the radio AGN appear to be clustered with a factor of 3 to 6 higher. The median K -band luminosities of LK = 1.7 ± 0.7 L * for the X-ray sources and LK = 2.3 ± 0.1 L * for the radio sources support the theory that these AGN are triggered by galaxy interaction and merging events in sub-groups with low internal velocity distributions, which make up the cluster environment in a pre-virialization evolutionary stage. 相似文献

Internationally there is considerable interest in utilizing hydrogen as an energy carrier. The use of hydrogen offers considerable potential benefits such as reducing greenhouse emissions, reducing urban pollution, increased energy security and increased efficiencies from the use of advanced energy conversion technologies.One of the most important questions when considering the development of a hydrogen economy is “where will the hydrogen come from?” Possible answers include electrolysis of water, steam reforming of methane and the gasification of coal. Given the high costs associated with electrolysis of water, and the increase in the cost of methane predicted over time, the gasification of coal is viewed by many as being the cheapest method of hydrogen production in the foreseeable future. These considerations are particularly relevant to New Zealand where gas supplies are dwindling but where there is sufficient coal to last for many centuries at present utilization rates. This, along with the current high international interest in hydrogen energy, has been recognized by the New Zealand Government in the form of a six-year [2002–2008] research project “Hydrogen Energy for the Future of New Zealand”.One important coal property that, in particular, determines the suitability of a particular coal for use in a fluidised bed gasifier is its reactivity towards the gasification reaction. It was found that a high percentage of New Zealand's coal resource is particularly well-suited towards fluidised bed gasification, reacting at anywhere between 0.9 to 1.75 times the rate of Australian brown coals. It was found the New Zealand lignites contained significant levels of organically bound calcium, which was shown to be responsible for not only the high reactivity of the New Zealand lignites, but also a product gas composition with higher than expected hydrogen concentrations. Data describing sediment generation focusing on the temporal evolution of size gradation are required for the prediction of long‐term landform evolution. This paper presents such data for the salt weathering of a quartz‐chlorite schist obtained from the Ranger Uranium Mine in northern Australia. Rock fragment samples are subjected to three different climate regimes: (1) a dry season climate; (2) a wet season climate (both based on observations at the Ranger site); and (3) an oven‐drying sequence designed to test the sensitivity of the weathering process by exposing the rocks to more extreme temperatures. Two MgSO4 salt solutions are applied, one being typical of wet season runoff and the other a more concentrated solution. Salt solution is applied daily in the wet season experiments and once only at the beginning of the dry season experiments. Results of the experiments reveal four stages of weathering. The kinetics of each stage are described and related to the formation of sediment of different sizes. Wet season climate conditions are shown to produce greater moisture variability and lead to faster weathering rates. However, salt concentrations in the wet season are typically lower and so when climate is combined with observed salt concentrations, the dry and wet season experiments weather at approximately equal rates. Finally, small variations in rock properties were shown to have a large impact on weathering rates, leading to the conclusion that rock weathering experiments need to be carefully designed if results are to be used to help predict weathering behaviour at the landscape scale. This work looks at the application of neural networks in geophysical well‐logging problems and specifically their utilization for inversion of nuclear downhole data. Simulated neutron and γ‐ray fluxes at a given detector location within a neutron logging tool were inverted to obtain formation properties such as porosity, salinity and oil/water saturation. To achieve this, the forward particle‐radiation transport problem was first solved for different energy groups (47 neutron groups and 20 γ‐ray groups) using the multigroup code EVENT. A neural network for each of the neutron and γ‐ray energy groups was trained to re‐produce the detector fluxes using the forward modelling results from 504 scenarios. The networks were subsequently tested on unseen data sets and the unseen input parameters (formation properties) were then predicted using a global search procedure. The results obtained are very encouraging with formation properties being predicted to within 10% average relative error. The examples presented show that neural networks can be applied successfully to nuclear well‐logging problems. This enables the implementation of a fast inversion procedure, yielding quick and reliable values for unknown subsurface properties such as porosity, salinity and oil saturation. 相似文献

à dinosaures, succédant en continuité à des niveaux marins carbonatés trés peu épais du Lias inférieur (Hettangien-Sinémurien
probables), sont rapportées au Lias moyen-supérieur. Les dép?ts continentaux contiennent une part importante de produits volcanoclastiques
différents des basaltes triasiques. Les centres d’émission, non connus, étaient sans doute proches. La sédimentation continentale,
de type chenaux fluviatiles – plaine d’inondation, refléte un climat chaud à périodes alternativement humides et séches, ces
derniéres étant fortement marquées. Les deux niveaux à ossements correspondent à des coulées boueuses ayant charrié des ossements
et portions de carcasses (os en connexion) sur de courtes distances. Ce mode de transport a préservé les ossements de l’érosion
et favorisé un enfouissement rapide permettant leur conservation.
