This study focused on the development of a seasonal data set of the Hg air/surface exchange over soils associated with low Hg containing surfaces in a deciduous forest in the southern USA. Data were collected every month for 11 months in 2004 within Standing Stone State Forest in Tennessee using the dynamic flux chamber method. Mercury air/surface exchange associated with the litter covered forest floor was very low with the annual mean daytime flux being 0.4 ± 0.5 ng m−2 h−1 (n = 301). The daytime Hg air/surface exchange over the year oscillated between emission (81% of samples with positive flux) and deposition (19% of samples with negative flux). A seasonal trend of lower emission in the spring and summer (closed canopy) relative to the fall and winter (open canopy) was observed. Correlations were found between the air/surface exchange and certain environmental factors on specific days sampled but not collectively over the entire year. The very low magnitude of Hg air/surface exchange as observed in this study suggests that an improved methodology for determining and reporting emission fluxes is needed when the values of fluxes and chamber blanks are both very low and comparable. This study raises questions and points to a need for more research regarding how to scale the Hg air/surface exchange for surfaces with very low emissions. 相似文献

Many vapor intrusion (VI) mitigation systems involve some form of gas extraction from below the concrete floor slab of a building to create a static vacuum below the slab that meets or exceeds a value specified in a guidance document or standard. This also results in some degree of ventilation below the floor slab, which reduces vapor concentrations and achieves some level of mass removal of target chemicals. The relative contribution of vacuum and ventilation to protecting building occupants is generally not quantified. Recent research completed under ESTCP Project ER-201322 yields some new insights using new lines of evidence. The results warrant changes in the guidance documents and standards of practice to promote and enable VI mitigation system designs that vary according to the transmissivity of the material below the floor slab and the rate of vertical leakance of indoor air across the floor slab and incorporate additional lines of evidence including the mass removal rate. 相似文献

Organic matter was isolated from the water columns and sediments of two pond systems in the south-eastern United States. Water column material was ultrafiltered to provide three fractions, i.e. <0.45 μm, but > 50,000 daltons; <50,000 daltons, but > 5000 daltons; and <5000 daltons. Sedimentary organic matter was separated into humic acid and fulvic acid fractions based on solubility criteria and the humic acid fraction was ultrafiltered to provide the same fractions as the water column isolates. All fractions were analysed for organic carbon, Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg and Mn. Infra-red spectra were also measured for the sedimentary organic fractions. Organic matter isolated from the water column of the two ponds had similar organic carbon and elemental distributions, as did the organic matter isolated from the two sediments. However, significant differences in the organic carbon and elemental distributions were observed for water column and sedimentary organic matter isolated from the same pond. Gulf sturgeon are anadromous, spawning in freshwater and returning to the marine environment to feed. Herein, we document
the marine distribution and timing of movement in and out of the marine environment of Gulf sturgeon natal to the Pascagoula
and Pearl rivers (MS and LA). From 1999 to 2004, we attached sonic transmitters to 194 fish averaging 151 (MS) to 160 (LA)
cm in fork length. We located 56 different Gulf sturgeon in the estuarine or marine environments, some multiple times. Fish
were distributed nonrandomly, being found primarily in shallow water (mean = 3.9 m) in barrier island passes. Benthic samples
taken at Gulf sturgeon telemetry location sites were dominated by Florida lancelets, sand dollars, annelids, haustoriid amphipods,
and mollusks—all documented prey of Gulf sturgeon. Movement into salt water consistently occurred in October and November;
movement back into rivers or low salinity estuaries was complete by the end of March. 相似文献

Summary ?This paper presents an objective analysis of the structure of daily rainfall variability over the South American/South Atlantic
region (15°–60° W and 0°–40° S) during individual austral summer months of November to March. From EOF analysis of satellite
derived daily rainfall we find that the leading mode of variability is represented by a highly coherent meridional dipole
structure, organised into 2 extensive bands, oriented northwest to southeast across the continent and Atlantic Ocean. We argue
that this dipole structure represents variability in the meridional position of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ).
During early and later summer, in the positive (negative) phase of the dipole, enhanced (suppressed) rainfall over eastern
tropical Brazil links with that over the subtropical and extra-tropical Atlantic and is associated with suppressed (enhanced)
rainfall over the sub-tropical plains and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. This structure is indicative of interaction between the
tropical, subtropical and temperate zones. Composite fields from NCEP reanalysis products (associated with the major positive
and negative events) show that in early and late summer the position of the SACZ is associated with variability in: (a) the
midlatitude wave structure, (b) the position of the continental low, and (c) the zonal position of the South Atlantic Subtropical
High. Harmonic analysis of the 200 hPa geopotential anomaly structure in the midlatitudes indicates that reversals in the
rainfall dipole structure are associated primarily with variability in zonal wave 4. There is evidence of a wave train extending
throughout the midlatitudes from the western Pacific into the SACZ region. During positive (negative) events the largest anomalous
moisture advection occurs within westerlies (easterlies) primarily from Amazonia (the South Atlantic). In both phases a convergent
poleward flow results along the leading edge of the low-level trough extending from the tropics into temperate latitudes.
High summer events differ from those in early and late summer in that the rainfall dipole is primarily associated with variability
in the phase of zonal wave 3, and that tropical-temperate link is not clearly evident in positive events.

The distribution of perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in the environment is well documented with higher concentrations observed in wildlife located in industrial and urban areas. This study examined the distribution of PFCs in relation to land use using blood samples collected from bottlenose dolphins during capture-release health assessment surveys conducted in Charleston, SC. The study area was partitioned into three subareas (ACW, CHS, and SRE) based upon habitat and land use characteristics. The ACW and CHS subareas are characterized by high degrees of industrial and urban land uses, while the SRE subarea is more residential and characterized by a lower degree of developed land use. Long-term monitoring data from photo-identification surveys were used to group bottlenose dolphins based on their proportions of sightings in the different subareas. Dolphins affiliated with both the ACW and CHS subareas were observed to have significantly higher mean plasma concentrations of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) than those affiliated with the SRE subarea. Dolphins affiliated with the ACW subarea were found to have a significantly higher mean plasma concentration of PFUnA than those affiliated with the CHS subarea. Further examination of the distribution of the PFCs revealed positive correlations with developed land uses and negative correlations with wetland/marsh land cover. A positive correlation was also observed between PFUnA and agricultural land use. The variability and scale of the observed contaminant burdens have important implications for the conservation and management of living marine resources and illustrates the importance of long-term monitoring of free-ranging wildlife species. 相似文献

Mercury air/surface exchange was measured over litter-covered soils with low Hg concentrations within various types of forests along the eastern seaboard of the USA. The fieldwork was conducted at six forested sites in state parks in South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Maine from mid-May to early June 2005. The study showed that the Hg air/surface exchange was consistently very low and similar (overall daytime mean flux = 0.2 ± 0.9 ng m−2 h−1, n = 310, for all six sites monitored) with the various forest types. These flux values are comparable with those found in a year-long study in Tennessee (yearly daytime mean = 0.4 ± 0.5 ng m−2 h−1), but lower than many previous flux results reported for background soils. The Hg fluxes at all sites oscillated around zero, with many episodes of deposition (negative fluxes) occurring in both daytime and nighttime. While there were particular days showing significant correlations among the Hg air/surface exchange and certain environmental parameters, perhaps because of the low fluxes encountered, few significant correlations were found for any particular day of sampling between the Hg flux and environmental parameters such as solar radiation, soil temperature, air temperature (little variability seen), relative humidity, and ambient air Hg concentrations. Factors driving the Hg exchange as previously found for enriched soils may not hold for these background litter-covered forest soils. The results suggest that spatial variations of the Hg air/surface exchange were small among these different forest types for this particular time of year. 相似文献
