The chemical composition of wolframite crystals from four different localities in Cornwall were investigated using an electron microprobe. The hübnerite:ferberite ratios were calculated and it was found that a considerable variation exists within each individual crystal. X-ray distribution images showed a patchy distribution of iron and manganese but not a zonal one. This evidence disputes the use of the H/F ratio as a geothermometer. 相似文献

A fiber extraction technique is used to concentrate Ra and Th isotopes from 1000 liters or more of seawater. Natural226Ra and234Th are used as yield tracers. In the equatorial Pacific the228Ra activity of surface water varies from 20 to 1 dpm/1000 kg and generally decreases away from continental shelf areas. Across the Peru Current System, this decrease is modeled as one-dimensional diffusion and indicates the possibility of two flow regimes with distinct characteristic mixing lengths and apparent eddy diffusivities of 105 and 107 cm2/s. The perturbing effects of advection and equatorial upwelling west of the Galapagos Islands are noted. Off the coast of Southern California a vertical228Ra distribution gives an apparent diffusivity of 1.6 cm2/s for the upper thermocline.226Ra concentrations near the coast appear to be higher than the open ocean values at comparable depths, which may reflect supply of this isotope from continental shelf sediments and/or upwelling. The insoluble daughter/soluble parent activity ratios228Th/228Ra and234Th/238U in the equatorial Pacific surface water display latitudinal trends which may be correlated with productivity variations. Near the coast of California these ratios reflect the differing oceanographic conditions north and south of Pt. Conception indicating a mean chemical removal time constant on the order of 4 months for Th and other highly reactive elements within the Southern California Bight. The232Th content of seawater sampled is less than 0.1 μg/1000 1; most of the published values for seawater232Th could well be too high. A comparison of the two methods of determining228Ra (via228Ac and via228Th) made on 64 seawater samples shows that the time delay required by the228Th method is more than compensated by its better analytical simplicity and precision. 相似文献

Recent sedimentary facies in marginal basins which are isolated from terrigenous sedimentation have been analysed in relation to their tectonic environment to generate a general evolutionary model for sedimentation in marginal basins of this type. Marginal basins are assumed to open symmetrically, while the sedimentation pattern is asymmetric. A volcaniclastic apron forms as a large submarine fan complex adjacent to the volcanic chain; beyond the distal end of the apron pelagic brown clay with a high content of montmorillonite, glass and phenocrysts accumulates. Pelagic oozes with high contents of CaCO3 are deposited in distal parts of the basin. The volcaniclastic apron migrates toward the remnant arc, prograding over older pelagic sediments. Cessation of spreading has little effect on the sedimentation pattern if volcanism is still active. When volcanic activity ceases, the dominant sediment sources are biogenous and wind-blown pelagics. Most basins by this time have subsided below the carbonate compensation depth (CCD) and these brown clays accumulate at rates near 2.5 m/m.y. No simple pattern of sedimentation emerges from the available data in marginal basins adjacent to continents or to major sources of terrigenous material. 相似文献

Distilled water was passed at a low rate down a temperature gradient through cylinders of Barre and Westerly Granite. Temperatures ranged from 80–100°C at the outer edges of the cylinders to 250–300°C in central, drilled holes which housed the heating coils. The measured permeabilities of the granite cylinders decreased by as much as two orders of magnitude in experiments of 1–3 weeks' duration. The amount of permeability decrease varied directly with temperature and inversely with the rate of fluid flow. The compositions of the fluids discharged from the granites were functions of temperature and flow rate as well as mineral composition, with dissolved silica concentrations showing trends different from those of the other analyzed species. Fluids from experiments run at higher temperatures but at much lower initial rates of fluid flow had higher concentrations of most ions but substantially lower dissolved silica contents. In contrast, an increase in temperature at similar rates of fluid flow resulted in higher silica concentrations. In the experiments, the distilled water acquired enough dissolved materials at high temperatures to become supersaturated with respect to several minerals at the low-temperature edges of the cylinders. Some of this material, particularly silica, was deposited along grain boundaries and microfractures, causing the observed permeability decreases. The very low rates of fluid flow in some high-temperature experiments significantly increased the rates of SiO2 precipitation and reduced dissolved silica concentrations relative to other species in the discharged fluids. 相似文献

A preliminary commission error analysis whereby orbit perturbation theory and other techniques are used to assess and predict the recovery of the Earths gravity field from the challenging microsatellite payload (CHAMP) mission is developed and implemented. With CHAMP launched in July 2000, accumulated evidence is now available to quantify the errors in the recovery procedure including the orbital precision from GPS, attitude errors, accelerometer noise and thruster mismatch/misalignment. For the latter, numerical integrations using a variable length single-step Runge–Kutta integrator and a fixed length multi-step method are compared to assess the error associated with assuming that the thruster misalignment can be spread uniformly across a step interval. Error degree variances from simulated studies are compared to results from a recently released CHAMP-based gravity field, EIGEN-1S. It is seen that the orbital positioning, as derived from the onboard GPS receiver, is critical, with accelerometer noise contributing at a lower level. Attitude error, at currently quoted accuracy, is not significant as an error source.

Roach, goby and sturgeon were examined for cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) expression and histopathology, in relation to contaminant burdens in fish and sediment. Gradients of induction of CYP1A were observed. Roach from the Ural and Ily River Deltas and roach and goby from the two stations nearest the Caspian Sea oil fields displayed higher levels of CYP1A expression in several organs than was observed in fish from further offshore. Great sturgeon and Russian sturgeon showed higher levels of CYP1A expression than was seen in starred sturgeon and gobies in the Ural delta. No fish showed evidence of contaminant-related histopathologies in the organs examined, despite the elevated CYP1A levels. Low levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and elevated levels of inshore and riverine petroleum hydrocarbons from these habitats suggest that this ongoing hydrocarbon exposure, and that from natural sources and long-term oil exploration on the Northeastern Caspian shore, contributed to the CYP1A induction observed. 相似文献
