Apparently, there are two types of size-frequency distributions of small lunar craters (1–100 m across): (1) crater production distributions for which the cumulative frequency of craters is an inverse function of diameter to power near 2.8, and (2) steady-state distributions for which the cumulative frequency of craters is inversely proportional to the square of their diameters. According to theory, cumulative frequencies of craters in each morphologic category within the steady-state should also be an inverse function of the square of their diameters. Some data on frequency distribution of craters by morphologic types are approximately consistent with theory, whereas other data are inconsistent with theory.A flux of crater producing objects can be inferred from size-frequency distributions of small craters on the flanks and ejecta of craters of known age. Crater frequency distributions and data on the craters Tycho, North Ray, Cone, and South Ray, when compared with the flux of objects measured by the Apollo Passive Seismometer, suggest that the flux of objects has been relatively constant over the last 100 m.y. (within 1/3 to 3 times of the flux estimated for Tycho).Steady-state frequency distributions for craters in several morphologic categories formed the basis for estimating the relative ages of craters and surfaces in a system used during the Apollo landing site mapping program of the U.S. Geological Survey. The relative ages in this system are converted to model absolute ages that have a rather broad range of values. The range of values of the absolute ages are between about 1/3 to 3 times the assigned model absolute age.  相似文献

Certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phenobarbital induced an increase in the activity of microsomal NADPH neotetrazolium reductase (linked to mixed function oxygenase systems) in the blood cells of Mytilus edulis. Phenanthrene and methylated naphthalenes caused lysosomal destabilisation which is believed to be directly related to the mechanism of cytotoxicity in the digestive cells. The use of these cytochemical techniques as indices of aromatic hydrocarbon contamination is discussed.  相似文献

Studies were performed on the common mussel, M. edulis L., to determine whether copper (Cu) exposure can affect the extent to which digestive cell proteins are oxidised and whether such oxidative damage is mediated by free radicals. Three age groups of mussels were exposed for 6 -days to environmentally realistic concentrations of Cu and then digestive gland homogenates were examined for evidence of protein carbonyl formation. Significant increases in carbonyls relative to untreated control mussels were seen for the youngest (2–4 year-old) and oldest (≥ 10 year-old) mussels only after exposure for 6 days, followed by recovery from exposure for a further 6 days. Untreated mussels also showed an age-related difference in protein oxidation, with a significantly lower concentration in the youngest animals (2–4 year olds). Copper did not affect the levels of modified tryptophan or tyrosine residues or the extent of total lipid peroxidation in digestive gland homogenate. Significant depletion of total vitamin E (a-tocopherol) was seen only in young and medium-aged mussels following exposure for 6 days. The levels of protein carbonyl groups were increased in digestive cell cytosol and lighter lysosomes but not in heavier lysosomes or digestive gland microsomes following 5 days exposure to Cu. Dihydrohodamine-123 was converted to fluorescent rhodamine-123 following sequestration into digestive cell lysosomes. The results suggest a link between the lysosomal sequestration of copper, a concomitant increase in the production of oxyradicals and the potential for intracellular oxidative damage, as well as an increased capacity for oxidative damage in older animals.  相似文献

Multichannel seismic reflection profiles across the Sunda Trench slope off central Sumatra reveal details of subduction zone structure. Normal faults formed on the outer ridge of the trench offset deep strate and the oceanic crust, but die out upsection under the trench sediments. At the base of the inner trench slope, shallow reflectors are tilted seaward, while deeper reflectors dip landward parallel to the underlying oceanic crustal reflector. Intermediate depth reflectors can be traced landward through a seaward-dipping monocline. We interpret this fold as the shallow expression of a landward-dipping thrust fault at depth. Landward of this flexure, relatively undeformed strata have been stripped off the oceanic plate, uplifted 700 meters, and accreted to the base of the slope. The oceanic crust is not involved in the deformation at the toe of the slope, and it can be observed dipping landward about 25 km under the toe of the accretionary prism.The middle portion of the trench slope is underlain by deformed accreted strata. Shallow reflectors define anticlinal structures, but coherent deep reflectors are lacking. Reflectors 45 to 55 km landward of the base of the slope dip 4°-5° landward beneath a steep slope, suggesting structural imbrication.A significant sediment apron is absent from the trench slope. Instead, slope basins are developed in 375–1500 m water depths, with an especially large one at about 1500 m water depth that is filled with more than 1.1 seconds of relatively undeformed sediments. The seaward flank of the basin has recently been uplifted, as indicated by shallow landward-dipping reflectors. A 42-d flow-through experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the organo-phosphate pesticide, chlorpyrifos, and microcosm size (small: 144 cm2; large: 400 cm2) on benthic estuarine macroinvertebrate colonization. Nested central and perimeter (outside margin) cores were used to assess animal distribution within microcosms. Fine-grained, organically-rich (approximately 4.0% organic carbon and 20% dry wt) sediments were nominally fortified with chlorpyrifos controls, low (1.0) and high treatments (10.0 μg−1 wet sediment). Large microcosms contained a significantly (p < 0.05) higher average taxa richness (10.9) than small microcosms (8.6) but small microcosms contained a significantly greater average animal density (295.8; numerical abundance adjusted to unit area) than large microcosms (120.5). Density of the polychaete, Neanthes succinea, the amphipod, Corophium acherusicum, and the barnacle, Balanus sp., was significantly greater in small microcosms but density of Ensis minor was significantly greater in large microcosms. In small and large microcosms, respectively, densities averaged significantly greater numbers in perimeter cores (e.g. 203.1 and 75.1) vs central cores (71.9 and 45.4). Average density decreased significantly with increasing chlorpyrifos concentration from controls (326.8), to low (123.8) and high (78.8) treatments. The density decrease was significantly related only to C. acherusicum whose densities decreased from controls (285.8) to low (88.5) and high (43.9) dosed microcosms. Application of an equilibrium partitioning model indicated that density of C. acherusicum was sensitive to an estimated interstitial water concentration of approximately 0.48 μg liter−1. Non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination analyses provided important insights into response patterns not available through ANOVA procedures. A permutation procedure (ANOSIM) detected a significant size effect (p < 0.0001) and a significant effect between controls and low (p < 0.042) and high doses (p < 0.013) but not between low and high chlorpyrifos treatments (p < 0.465). A single species, C. ascherusicum, as in the ANOVA analyses, dominated contributions to community average percent dissimilarity in most combinations of microcosm size and chlorpyrifos treatment effects (range: 8.4–21.9%). Community structure differed significantly in several combinations of microcosm size, core position and chlorpyrifos treatment. Results confirm earlier work that intrinsic design factors influence benthic macroinvertebrate community structure and determine taxa available to pesticide exposure in microcosms.  相似文献

Coastal zones are among the most productive and vulnerable areas on the planet. An example of impact on these fragile environments was shown in the case of the "Sea Empress" oil tanker, which ran aground in the Bristol Channel in 1996, spilling 72,000 tons of "Forties" crude oil. The objective was to investigate the sub-lethal cellular pathology and tissue hydrocarbon contamination in marine mussel populations, 4 months after the initial spill, using the neutral red retention (NRR) assay for lysosomal stability in blood cells. NRR was reduced in mussels, and indicative of cell injury, from the two sites closest to the spill in comparison with more distant and reference sites. Lysosomal stability was inversely correlated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in mussel tissues. Reduced lysosomal stability has previously been shown to contribute to impaired immunocompetence and to autophagic loss of body tissues. The use of this type of technique is discussed in the context of cost-effective, ecotoxicological tools for Integrated Coastal Zone Management.  相似文献

Depth profiles of the naturally-occurring radionuclides 238U, 234U, 226Ra, 228Ra and 228Th were obtained in two diverse anoxic marine environments; the permanently anoxic Framvaren Fjord in southern Norway and the intermittently anoxic Saanich Inlet in British Columbia. Concentrations of total H2S were over three orders of magnitude greater in the anoxic bottom waters of Framvaren Fjord compared to those in Saanich Inlet.In Framvaren Fjord, the O2/H2S interface was located at 17 m. While dissolved 238U behaved conservatively throughout the oxic and anoxic water columns, concentrations based on the 238U/salinity ratio in oxic oceanic waters were almost 30% lower. Dissolved 226Ra displayed a sharp maximum just below the O2/H2S interface, coinciding with dissolved Mn (II) and Fe (II) maxima in this zone. It is suggested that reductive dissolution of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides remobilizes 226Ra in this region.In Saanich Inlet, the O2/H2S interface was located at 175 m. Dissolved 238U displayed a strongly nonconservative distribution. The depth profiles of dissolved 226Ra and 228Th correlated well with the distribution of dissolved Mn (II) in the suboxic waters above the O2/H2S interface, suggesting that reduction of particulate Mn regulates the behavior of 226Ra and 228Th in this region.Removal residence times for dissolved 228Th in the surface oxic waters of both systems are longer than those generally reported for particle-reactive radionuclides in coastal marine environments. In the anoxic waters of Framvaren Fjord and Saanich Inlet, however, the dissolved 228Th removal residence times are quite similar to values reported for dissolved 210Pb in the anoxic waters of the Cariaco Trench and the Orca Basin. This implies that the geochemistries of Th and Pb may be similar in anoxic marine waters.  相似文献
