We present laboratory and field evidence that in mountainous catchment‐fan systems persistent alluvial fanhead aggradation and trenching may result from infrequent, large sediment inputs. We suggest that the river‐fan systems along the fault‐bounded range front of the western Southern Alps, New Zealand, are likely to be in a dynamic equilibrium on ≥103‐yr timescales, superimposed on which their fanheads undergo long‐term cumulative episodic aggradation. These fanheads are active only in rare events, do not take part in the usual behaviour of the catchment‐fan system and require much longer to exhibit dynamic equilibrium than the rest of the fan. These findings (1) increase our knowledge of the effects of extreme events on alluvial fan morphodynamics in humid climates, (2) question the general applicability of inferring past climatic or tectonic regimes from alluvial‐fan morphology and stratigraphy and (3) provide a conceptual basis for hazard zonation on alluvial fans. The organic composition of produced water samples from coalbed natural gas (CBNG) wells in the Powder River Basin, WY, sampled in 2001 and 2002 are reported as part of a larger study of the potential health and environmental effects of organic compounds derived from coal. The quality of CBNG produced waters is a potential environmental concern and disposal problem for CBNG producers, and no previous studies of organic compounds in CBNG produced water have been published. Organic compounds identified in the produced water samples included: phenols, biphenyls, N-, O-, and S-containing heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines, various non-aromatic compounds, and phthalates. Many of the identified organic compounds (phenols, heterocyclic compounds, PAHs) are probably coal-derived. PAHs represented the group of organic compounds most commonly observed. Concentrations of total PAHs ranged up to 23 μg/L. Concentrations of individual compounds ranged from about 18 to <0.01 μg/L. Temporal variability of organic compound concentrations was documented, as two wells with relatively high organic compound contents in produced water in 2001 had much lower concentrations in 2002. 相似文献

The Neoproterozoic Wadi Kid metamorphic belt in southeastern Sinai in Egypt represents a structurally and metamorphically complex assemblage of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks folded into a series of ENE–WSW-trending antiforms and synforms. Geological mapping in this region is challenging, primarily due to difficult access, complexity of structures, and lack of resolution and areal integrity of lithological differentiation using conventional mapping techniques. Spectral ratioing of selected bands of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data of the area, in synergy with geological field observation, proved effective in resolving geological mapping problems in the region. A new ASTER band-ratio image 4/7-4/6-4/10 is applied successfully for lithological mapping in the Wadi Kid area, showing improvement over previous techniques in detailing the main rock units. These are gneiss and migmatite, amphibolite, volcanogenic sediments with banded iron formation, meta-pelites, talc schist, meta-psammites, meta-acidic volcanics, meta-pyroclastics volcaniclastics, albitites and granitic rocks. Validating the use of the new ASTER band-ratio image relied on both calculating statistical optimum index factor (OIF) and matching interpreted lithological boundaries to field data and previously published geologic maps. The adopted ASTER band-ratio image demonstrates the benefit of using ASTER remote sensing data in lithological mapping of the Wadi Kid area and therefore for lithological mapping in the Arabian–Nubian shield and other arid areas. 相似文献

Fluid inclusions in quartz veins within Proterozoic metamorphic rocks in the Black Hills, South Dakota, were examined by microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy to assess the evolution of fluid compositions during regional metamorphism of organic-rich shales and late-orogenic magmatism, both of which were related to the collision of the Wyoming and Superior crustal blocks. Fluid inclusions occur in veins that began to be generated before or during regional compression and metamorphism that reached at least garnet-grade conditions, and in veins within the aureole of the Harney Peak Granite (HPG), where temperatures reached second-sillimanite grade conditions. Early veins in the schists have undergone recrystallization during heating and deformation that modified the composition of early CH4 or CO2 and N2-dominated inclusions. These fluids were apparently trapped under conditions of immiscibility with a saline aqueous fluid phase. They are interpreted to represent components generated during maturation of organic matter and dehydration of phyllosilicates during incipient metamorphism at reducing fO2 conditions. Most inclusions in the quartz veins are, however, secondary CO2-bearing. They imply a transition to higher fO2 conditions with increasing temperature of regional metamorphism. The fO2 conditions may have been controlled by the mineral assemblage in the host metapelites. The prevalence of bimodal distributions of trapped CO2-N2 and aqueous endmembers in the biotite and garnet zones also suggests that two immiscible fluid phases existed during the regional metamorphism.In the aureole of the HPG, graphite was evidently consumed by influx of magmatic fluids. CO2-H2O fluid inclusions dominate, but they have significantly less N2 than inclusions at lower metamorphic grades. All inclusions define secondary trails in mostly unstrained quartz. The bimodality of inclusion compositions is not as well defined as at lower grades, with many inclusions containing intermediate CO2-H2O compositions. This suggests that a single fluid phase existed at the high temperatures in the granite aureole, but then unmixed during cooling. A set of late quartz veins with graphitized and tourmalinized selvages in the granite aureole contains CH4-bearing inclusions with little N2. The existence of CH4 in these inclusions is attributed to complexing of magmatic B with hydroxyl anions taken from the CO2-H2O fluid phase, effectively causing reduction in fO2 and promoting precipitation of graphite. 相似文献

We excavated five trenches across the North Anatolia fault zone (NAFZ)along the Ganos fault (Gazikoy-Saros segment), which last produced surfacerupture in 1912, near Kavakkoy where the fault enters the Gulf of Saros. The trenches exposed faulted sediments in a flood-plain environment withabundant detrital charcoal and scattered land-snail shells. Twenty-tworadiocarbon dates place constraints on the ages of the exposed sediments,which range from less than a few hundred years to about 6000 years inage. In two closely spaced trenches, we identified five discrete earthquakeevent horizons in the upper 2.5 m of stratigraphy based on abruptupward termination of shear zones, folding, fissuring, and abruptstratigraphic thickening, four of which may corresponded to historicallyrecorded large regional earthquakes. The earliest of the identified eventsoccurs below an unconformity and dates to about 4 ka B.P. The morerecent four events all occurred within the past 1000–1200 years and maycorrespond to large earthquakes in A.D. 824, ca 1354, 1509, 1766 and1912 (Ambraseys and Finkel, 1987, 1991, 1995). In another trench,we identified at least two events that have occurred during the past 500years and probably correspond to the large events of 1766 and 1912. These observations support an average return period of about 250–300years for the Gazikoy-Saros segment of the NAFZ. They also suggest thatthis segment, which is bound both to the east and west by large releasingstepovers, behaves in a quasi-periodic fashion, at least for the past severalsurface ruptures.Most of the 23 mm/yr of dextral shear between Anatolia and Europeobserved by GPS occurs on the North Anatolian fault. We use18 mm/yr and the 250–300 year recurrence rate, as determined fromour trenching and the historical record, to suggest that each of theearthquakes observed in our trenches produced several meters of slip,consistent with their inferred sizes from the extent of historical damage. Considering that Istanbul has not suffered a large nearby event in theMarmara Sea since 1766, we suggest that about 4 m of strain hasaccumulated across faults in the Marmara during these past centuries. Thisis similar to the average slip in many of the large earthquakes on the NorthAnatolian fault this century. If released seismically, this could result in anearthquake in the M 7.2–M 7.6 range, similar to the August and November,1999 earthquakes east of the Marmara Sea. 相似文献

Infrared emission lines of stratospheric ammonia (NH3) were observed following the collisions of the fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter in July of 1994 at the impact sites of fragments G and K. Infrared heterodyne spectra near 10.7 μm were obtained by A. Betz et al. (in Abstracts for Special Sessions on Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, The 26th Meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences, Washington DC, 31 Oct.-4 Nov. 1994, p. 25) using one of the Infrared Spatial Interferometer telescope systems on Mount Wilson. Lineshapes of up to three different NH3 emission lines were measured at a resolving power of ∼107 at multiple times following the impacts. We present here our radiative transfer analysis of the fully resolved spectral lineshapes of the multiple rovibrational lines. This analysis provides information on temperature structure and NH3 abundance distributions and their temporal changes up to 18 days after impact. These results are compared to photochemical models to determine the role of photochemistry and other mechanisms in the destruction and dilution of NH3 in the jovian stratosphere after the SL9 impacts.One day following the G impact, the inferred temperature above 0.001 mbar altitude is 283±13 K, consistent with a recent plume splashback model. Cooling of the upper stratosphere to 204 K by the fourth day and to quiescence after a week is consistent with a simple gray atmosphere radiative flux calculation and mixing with cold jovian air. During the first 4 days after impact, NH3 was present primarily at altitudes above 1 mbar with a column density of (7.7±1.6)×1017 cm−2 after 1 day and (3.7±0.8)×1017 cm−2 after 4 days. (Errors represent precision.) We obtained >2.5 times more NH3 than can be supplied by nitrogen from a large cometary fragment, suggesting a primarily jovian source for the NH3. By 18 days postimpact, a return to quiescent upper stratospheric temperature is retrieved for the G region, with an NH3 column density of 7.3×1017 cm−2 or more in the lower stratosphere, possibly supplied by NH3 upwelling across an impact-heated and turbulent tropopause, which may have been masked by initial dust and haze. Above the 1-mbar level, the maximum retrieved column density decreased to 6.5×1016 cm−2. Comparison to photochemical models indicates that photolysis alone is not sufficient to account for the loss of NH3 above 1 mbar by that time, even when chemical reformation of NH3 is ignored. We speculate that the dispersion of plume material at high altitudes (above 1 mbar) is responsible for the change in the spectra observed a few days postimpact. This paper presents the results of finite element (FE) analyses of shear strain localization that occurred in cohesionless soils supported by a geosynthetic‐reinforced retaining wall. The innovative aspects of the analyses include capturing of the localized deformation and the accompanying collapse mechanism using a recently developed embedded strong discontinuity model. The case study analysed, reported in previous publications, consists of a 3.5‐m tall, full‐scale reinforced wall model deforming in plane strain and loaded by surcharge at the surface to failure. Results of the analysis suggest strain localization developing from the toe of the wall and propagating upward to the ground surface, forming a curved failure surface. This is in agreement with a well‐documented failure mechanism experienced by the physical wall model showing internal failure surfaces developing behind the wall as a result of the surface loading. Important features of the analyses include mesh sensitivity studies and a comparison of the localization properties predicted by different pre‐localization constitutive models, including a family of three‐invariant elastoplastic constitutive models appropriate for frictional/dilatant materials. Results of the analysis demonstrate the potential of the enhanced FE method for capturing a collapse mechanism characterized by the presence of a failure, or slip, surface through earthen materials. We investigate the association of high-speed solar wind with coronal holes during the Skylab mission by: (1) direct comparison of solar wind and coronal X-ray data; (2) comparison of near-equatorial coronal hole area with maximum solar wind velocity in the associated streams; and (3) examination of the correlation between solar and interplanetary magnetic polarities. We find that all large near-equatorial coronal holes seen during the Skylab period were associated with high-velocity solar wind streams observed at 1 AU.Harvard College Observatory-Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.A substantial portion of this work was done while a visiting scientist at American Science and Engineering. 相似文献
