To investigate the potential for enantioselective transformation and accumulation, the enantiomer distributions of seven polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) atropisomers were measured in the sediment and biota from a sub-tropical estuary heavily contaminated with Aroclor 1268, a technical mixture of highly chlorinated PCB congeners. Enantiomer fractions (EFs) of PCBs 91, 95, 136, 149, 174, 176, and 183 in marsh sediment, invertebrate, forage and predatory fish species, and bottlenose dolphins were determined. Non-racemic EFs greater than 0.75 were found in sediments for PCBs 136 and 174, likely the result of microbial dechlorination. Although enantiomer fractions in grass shrimp (Palaemonetes spp.) mirrored those of sediment, fish species had EFs that differed significantly from sediment or grass shrimp. Similarly, bottlenose dolphins were also found to contain non-racemic quantities of PCBs 91, 136, 174, 176, and 183. Non-racemic EFs in these biota were likely a result of both uptake of non-racemic proportions of PCBs from the diet and enantioselective biotransformation.  相似文献

Mussels were maintained for 4 weeks under different combinations of dissolved oxygen concentration (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 mg O2 l(-1)) and salinity (15, 20, 25 and 30) in a 3×4 factorial design experiment. Clearance rate (CR), absorption efficiency (AE), respiration rate (RR) and scope for growth (SFG) decreased with decreasing salinity and dissolved oxygen concentration (DO), while excretion rate (ER) increased with decreasing salinity and increasing DO. The O:N ratio was <10 at salinities of 15 and 20, irrespective of DO levels. SFG was negative in most of the treatments, except for those under 6.0 mg O2 l(-1) or at a salinity of 30 when DO was lower. The results may help explain the distribution pattern of Perna viridis in Hong Kong waters and provide guidelines for mussel culture site selection.  相似文献

Tolo Harbour is a landlocked bay with poor tidal flushings in the northeastern part of Hong Kong. During the 1980s, excessive nutrient loading led to dramatic increase in nutrient concentrations, accompanied by lower N:P ratios, higher algal biomass and shifts in the phytoplankton community. We studied the effects of nutrient loading reduction measures on nutrient concentrations, nutrient ratios and phytoplankton dynamics in Tolo Harbour by comparing data collected before the full implementation of nutrient loading reduction measures (1986-1997) to those after the implementation (1998-2008). Such measures led to declines in nutrient concentrations, changes in N:P and N:Si ratios, lower chlorophyll-a concentrations and fewer algal blooms. Diatoms were the most abundant phytoplankton group in Tolo Harbour both before and after declines in nutrient concentrations. The density of dinoflagellates did not change, but substantial increase in other algal group abundance was recorded.  相似文献

The Jiangshan–Shaoxing Fault Zone (JSFZ) in Zhejiang Province has been proposed to represent a suture between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks in South China. In this study, in-situ zircon U–Pb and Hf isotopic analysis and whole-rock major- and trace-element measurement of early to middle Cretaceous felsic rocks across the fault zone were conducted to constrain the nature of the fault zone. Twelve Cretaceous granitoid bodies were sampled from the NW and SE sides of the fault zone, respectively, with composition ranging from diorite to granite (SiO2 = 56.2–76.6 wt.%). These granitoids yielded U–Pb ages ranging from 135–100 Ma, with a systematic variation in zircon Hf isotopic compositions (εHf(t) = + 6.9 to –7.0 in the NW side vs. + 1.9 to ? 12.9 in the SE side). The TDM2 values for the granitoids from the NW side are 0.34 to 1.33 Ga, with two peaks at ca. 876 and 1170 Ma respectively, whereas those from the SE side are 0.70 to 1.62 Ga, with a single peak at ca. 1126 Ma. The Hf isotopic disparity for the two sides may indicate a fundamental difference in the lower crustal compositions of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks, supporting that the JSFZ is possibly a suture zone between the two blocks. Our results together with the available geological data suggest that the Mesoproterozoic materials are important for both the Yangtze and Cathaysia basement and the Neoproterozoic magmatic activities were important in the Yangtze Block, possibly related to the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent, but less significant in the Cathaysia Block. This may imply that the two blocks have not completely juxtaposed in the Neoproterozoic.  相似文献

The occurrence of several recent “extreme” earthquakes with their significant loss of life and the apparent failure to have been prepared for such disasters has raised the question of whether such events are accounted for in modern seismic hazard analyses. In light of the great 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, were the questions of “how big, how bad, and how often” addressed in probabilistic seismic hazard analyses (PSHA) in Japan, one of the most earthquake-prone but most earthquake-prepared countries in the world? The guidance on how to properly perform PSHAs exists but may not be followed for a whole range of reasons, not all technical. One of the major emphases of these guidelines is that it must be recognized that there are significant uncertainties in our knowledge of earthquake processes and these uncertainties need to be fully incorporated into PSHAs. If such uncertainties are properly accounted for in PSHA, extreme events can be accounted for more often than not. This is not to say that no surprises will occur. That is the nature of trying to characterize a natural process such as earthquake generation whose properties also have random (aleatory) uncertainties. It must be stressed that no PSHA is ever final because new information and data need to be continuously monitored and addressed, often requiring an updated PSHA.  相似文献

Seismic stratigraphic analysis of 150 km of high-resolution seismic profiles (GEO-PULSE and 3.5 kHz) obtained along the muddy coast off Taishan, Guangdong provided valuable information on the offshore Quaternary stratigraphy, tectonics, sedimentary evolution, and environmental and engineering geology of this area. The following late Quaternary stratigraphic sequences were mapped. (1) Pleistocene alluvial silty sand and shallow marine clay; (2) coarse fluvial channel sand; (3) nearshore and bay clayey sediments. The incision of fluvial channels occurred in two stages: dttring the Late Pleistocene and at the beginning of the Holocene. The Pleistocene fluvial channels have been filled by coarses and overlain by more than 10 m of late Pleistocene clay and 20 - 30 m of Holocene clay. The coastal area is dissected by two major fault systems: the first group strikes ENE-WSW and controls the evolution of the adjacent Quaternary basin, while the second one trends NNE-SSW. These fault systems must be taken into account in any coastal engineering considerations. In addition, both granitic and metamorphic basements were recognized.  相似文献

Spectroscopic remote sensing in the infrared and (sub)millimeter range is a powerful technique that is well suited for detecting minor species in planetary atmospheres (Planet Space Sci. 43(1995) 1485). Yet, only a handful of molecules in the Mars atmosphere (CO2, CO and H2O along with their isotopic species, O3, and more recently H2O2 and CH4) have been detected so far by this method. New high performance spectroscopic instruments will become available in the future in the infrared and (sub)millimeter range, for observations from the ground (infrared spectrometers on 8 m class telescopes, large millimeter and submillimeter interferometers) and from space, in particular the Planetary Fourier Spectrometer (PFS) aboard Mars Express (MEx), and the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) aboard the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO). In this paper we will present results of a study that determines detectability of minor species in the atmosphere of Mars, taking into account the expected performance of the above spectroscopic instruments. In the near future, a new determination of the D/H value is expected with the PFS, especially during times of maximum H2O abundance in the martian atmosphere. PFS is also expected to place constraints on the abundance of several minor species (H2O2,CH4,CH2O, SO2, H2S, OCS, HCl) above any local outgassing sources, the hot spots. It will be possible to obtain complementary information on some minor species (O3,H2O2, CH4) from ground-based infrared spectrometers on large telescopes. In the more distant future, HIFI will be ideally suited for measuring the isotopic ratios with unprecedented accuracy. Moreover, it should be able to observe O2, which has not yet been detected spectroscopically in the IR/submm range, as well as H2O2. HIFI should also provide upper limits for several species that have not yet been detected (HCl, NH3, PH3) in the atmosphere of Mars. Some species (SO, SO2,H2S, OCS, CH2O) that may be observable from the ground could be searched for with present single-dish antennae and arrays, and in the future with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) submillimeter interferometer.  相似文献

Dongsha Island and the adjacent sea area locate at the northern continental margin of the South China Sea (SCS), and is connected to the east by the Manila Trench. Analyses of seismic stratigraphy and gravity, magnetic and drilling wells data led to the discovery of three post-fault sequences (Ⅴ, Ⅵ, Ⅶ). Extensive tectonic uplift, magma activity and erosion occurred in Dongsha Island and the adjacent area, where most of the faults in the northeastern SCS were still active during Pliocene and Quaternary. Two groups of faults trending NEE and NW were developed during Late Cenozoic. We conclude that three important tectonic movements, especially Dongsha movement(4.4 - 5.2 Ma) and Liuhua movement (1.4 - 1.89 Ma), controlled the structural framework in the Dongsha rise; whose deformation in the east is stronger than that in the west and whose stress field variation suggests that the tectonic uplift in the study area contributed to magmato-tectonic events correlated to the main collision phases between the East China and Taiwan 5 - 3 and 3 - 0 Ma ago.  相似文献
