The Mgeni Estuary is situated on the east coast of South Africa. Tidal salinity changes commonly extend 2.5 km upstream from the mouth. The subtropical climatic regime causes seasonal flooding, the geomorphological effects of which are increased by a steep river gradient. A 120-150 year flood event during September 1987, with an estimated peak discharge of 10800 cumecs, resulted in the erosion of 1.86 × 106 m3 of sediment from the estuary. The normal high tide volume of the estuary (0.35 × 106 m3) increased to 1.85 × 106 m3 after the flood. The post-flood intertidal volume (tidal prism) of the estuary was 0.43 × 106 m3 compared to 0.19 × 106 m3 before the event. The nature and extent of erosion in the estuary was controlled by the composition of the estuary banks and bed material. Gravel and sand substrates were preferentially eroded from the estuary bed before the cohesive bank materials were undercut in sections of the estuary. Mud and fine sand were deposited on overbank areas when the flood waned and a lag of coarse sand and gravel was produced on the estuary bed. Approximately 46 per cent of the bedload sediment supplied to the estuary since 1917 was retained in the estuary until the 1987 flood. The remainder was transported through the system and into the Indian Ocean. Results show that catastrophic floods play an important role in sedimentation in small estuaries. 相似文献

Early diagenesis of organic matter in sediments from two sites in the Peruvian Upwelling Zone (12°05′S, 77°39′W; 15°17′S, 75°24′W) has been studied by observing changes in the total organic carbon and lipid and humin fractions with depth. Transformations of the total carbon and humin fraction have been characterized by conventional and time-dependent solid state NMR techniques, while lipid diagenesis was monitored by measuring the concentration of sterols in the same sedimentary horizons. Both the quantity of total sterols and the relative abundances of individual sterols vary with sampling location, suggesting a difference in the input of biomass to the sediments at the two sites. Total sterol concentrations decrease with depth at both sites, but the loss of sterols occurs much more slowly at the more anoxic northern site, where sedimentation rates and organic carbon contents are approximately twice those at the southern site. 13C-NMR spectra of the total organic carbon and the humin fraction suggest that humin-like compounds are an original component of the sedimentary biomass, and dipolar-dephased spectra of the humin residue indicate that diagenetic alterations of the humin fraction are occurring even in these very young sediments. Conventional and time-dependent spectroscopic data support the hypothesis that humin formation results from selective preservation of microbially-resistant biopolymers which are an original component of the sedimentary biomass combined with loss of certain labile compounds. 相似文献

The sintering behavior of olivine and olivine-basalt aggregates has been examined at temperatures near 1,300° C. Experimental factors contributing to rapid sintering kinetics and high-density, fine-grained specimens include: (i) the uniform dispersion of basalt throughout the specimen, (ii) a very fine, uniform particle size for the olivine powder, (iii) oxygen fugacities near the high P O2 end of the olivine stability field, and (iv) rapid heating to the sintering temperature. Olivine-basalt specimens prepared from olivine particles coated with a synthetic basalt achieve chemical and microstructural equilibrium more rapidly, as well as produce higher density and finer grain-sized aggregates, than do specimens prepared by mechanical mixing of olivine and natural basalt powders. The grain boundary mobility for olivine, measured for olivine-basalt aggregates which have undergone secondary recrystallization, is on the order of 2×10?15 (m/s)/(N/m2) in the temperature range 1,300–1,400° C. Solution-precipitation (pressure-solution) processes make an important contribution to the development of the microstructure in olivine-basalt aggregates. 相似文献

Lake Chicot is an oxbow lake located along the western side of the Mississippi River in southeastern Arkansas. A major flood
in 1927, levee construction, land use changes from bottomland hardwood to agriculture, a large increase in drainage area,
and stream channelization have altered the appearance of contributing watersheds and the lake. The lake often has high suspended
sediment concentrations making it undesirable for recreation and aquatic production. As part of a coordinated study to determine
changes in the lake, sediment accumulation patterns and rates were determined in Lake Chicot using the137Cs technique. Major sediment accumulation is occurring near the major inlet and along the thalweg of the oxbow. Average sediment
accumulation of 1.8 cm/yr since 1963 was measured for twelve samples. Calculations show sediment accumulation is decreasing.
This study has shown that the137Cs technique can provide useful planning information for the environmental geologist or reservoir manager. Results of the
current study will be used to develop better sediment and water management strategies for Lake Chicot.

Lithogeochemical-mineralogical haloes around unconformity-type uranium deposits in northern Saskatchewan can expand the size of drill targets up to fifteen times. The deposits are located at or near the unconformity between Aphebian metamorphosed basement rocks in close proximity to Archean granitoids and overlying unmetamorphosed sandstones of the Helikian Athabasca Group. Deposits studied include Key Lake (Deilmann), Midwest Lake and Eagle Point.Unconformity-type deposits are associated with broad alteration haloes in the overlying sandstones and more restricted haloes in the basement rocks. The haloes in the sandstone are localized around steeply dipping fault structures and are characterized by zones of intense leaching of specular hematite and detrital heavy mineral layers and by changes in chemistry related to clay mineral alteration and tourmalinization.Clay mineral alteration haloes are common in the sandstone and basement host rocks. Interstitial clays consist mainly of kaolinite and illite with lesser amounts of chlorite. The ratio K2O/AI2O3 proved useful in delineating illite-kaolinite patterns in the sandstone and in the uppermost portions of the paleoweathering profile in basement rocks. The Midwest deposit is characterized by a broad bell-shaped zone (500 m across strike) of high K2O/AI2O3 ratios (>0.18) in which illite is the dominant clay mineral. The sandstone above the Deilmann deposit, on the other hand, is characterized by silicification and kaolinitization with low K2O/AI2O3 ratios (<0.04). This kaolinite cap overprints a preexisting illite zone.Anomalously high boron values are characteristic of the three deposits considered in this study. Boron anomalies are similar in extent to the anomalous clay mineral alteration haloes. Altered sandstones commonly contain aggregates of radiating magnesium-rich dravite needles within the clay matrix. The interpretation of boron patterns is problema tical however, mainly because of the detrital tourmaline component in sandstones and metamorphic tourmalines present in the Aphebian metasediments.Trace elements such as U, Ni, As and Co are generally of limited use in expanding targets in sandstone because their haloes are restricted to a few tens of metres horizon-anomalies along the steeply dipping zones of mineralization related to fault structures. Uranium (>3 ppm) does form an anomaly more than 200 metres laterally across the Midwest deposit. At the Deilmano deposit anomalous uranium dispersion is restricted to within a few metres of high grade ore.In the basement rocks, the various layers of the paleoweathering profile are geochemically overprinted up to 250 m from mineralization. Bleaching related to illitization and chloritization is associated with enrichment in K2O, MgO, B, S, U, As, Ni and P2O3. The ratio Fe2O3/MgO is useful in delineating chloritization in the upper portion of the paleo weathering profile.Deposits with large root extensions in the Aphebian metasediments such as Eagle Point, have intense dravite-chlorite-illite alteration zones which are restricted to within a few metres of mineralization across strike. ‘Quartzite” units are alteration related. The complexity of the basement lithology inhibits the use of individual elements as alteration guides other than in the intensely altered zone. The application of multivariant techniques, element ratios and clay mineralogical work prove useful in identifying the mineralogical changes at Eagle Point. 相似文献

Results from two independently developed biomass-burning smoke plume models are compared. Model results were obtained for the temporal evolution of two nascent smoke plumes originating from significantly different fire environments (an Alaskan boreal forest and an African savanna). The two smoke plume models differed by 1%–10% for [O3], with similar differences for NO
x
and formaldehyde (relative percent differences). Smaller intermodel differences were observed for the African savanna smoke plume as compared to the plume from the Alaskan boreal fire. Mechanistic differences between the models are heightened for the Alaskan smoke plume due to the higher VOC emission ratios as compared to the African savanna fire. The largest deviations result from the differences in oxidative photochemical mechanisms, with a smaller contribution attributable to the calculation of photolysis frequencies. The differences between the two smoke plume models are significantly smaller than the uncertainties of available photokinetic data or field measurements. Model accuracy depends most significantly on having the fullest possible VOC data, a requirement that is constrained by currently available instrumentation. 相似文献

Traditionally, approaches to account for the effect of the boundary roughness of a gravel‐bed river have used a grain‐size index of the bed surface as a surrogate for hydraulic resistance. The use of a single grain‐size does not take into account the spatial heterogeneity in the bed surface and how this heterogeneity imparts resistance on the flow, nor the way in which this relationship changes with variables such as flow stage. A new technique to remotely quantify hydraulic resistance is proposed. It is based on measuring the dynamics of a river's water surface and relating this to the actual hydraulic resistance created by a rough sediment boundary. The water surface dynamics are measured using a new acoustic technique, grazing angle sound propagation (GRASP). This proposed method to measure hydraulic resistance is based on a greater degree of physical reasoning, and this is discussed in the letter. By measuring acoustically the temporal dynamics of turbulent water surfaces over a water‐worked gravel bed in a laboratory flume, a dependency is demonstrated between the temporal variation in the reflected acoustic pressure and measured hydraulic resistance. It is shown that the standard deviation in acoustic pressure decreases with increasing hydraulic resistance. This is shown to apply for a range of relative submergences and bed slopes that are typical of gravel‐bed rivers. This remote sensing technique is both rapid and inexpensive, and has the potential to be applied to natural river channels and to other environmental turbulent flows, such as overland flows. A whole new class of low‐cost, remote and non‐intrusive instruments could be developed as a result and used in a wide range of hydraulic and hydrological applications.
