HR 1217 is a prototypical rapidly oscillating Ap star that has presented a test to the theory of non-radial stellar pulsation. Prior observations showed a clear pattern of five modes with alternating frequency spacings of 33.3 and 34.6 μHz, with a sixth mode at a problematic spacing of 50.0 μHz (which equals 1.5×33.3 μHz) to the high-frequency side. Asymptotic pulsation theory allowed for a frequency spacing of 34 μHz, but Hipparcos observations rule out such a spacing. Theoretical calculations of magnetoacoustic modes in Ap stars by Cunha predicted that there should be a previously undetected mode 34 μHz higher than the main group, with a smaller spacing between it and the highest one. In this Letter, we present preliminary results from a multisite photometric campaign on the rapidly oscillating Ap star HR 1217 using the 'Whole Earth Telescope'. While a complete analysis of the data will appear in a later paper, one outstanding result from this run is the discovery of a newly detected frequency in the pulsation spectrum of this star, at the frequency predicted by Cunha. 相似文献

Plasma and magnetic field parameter variations across fast forward interplanetary shocks are analyzed during the last solar
cycle minimum (1995–1996, 15 shocks), and maximum year 2000 (50 shocks). It was observed that the solar wind velocity and
magnetic field strength variation across the shocks were the parameters better correlated with Dst. Superposed epoch analysis centered on the shock showed that, during solar minimum, B
z
profiles had a southward, long-duration variation superposed with fluctuations, whereas in solar maximum the B
z
profile presented 2 peaks. The first peak occurred 4 hr after the shock, and seems to be associated with the magnetic field
disturbed by the shock in the sheath region. The second peak occurred 19 hr after the shock, and seems to be associated with
the ejecta fields. The difference in shape and peak in solar maximum (Dst peak =−50 nT, moderate activity) and minimum (Dst peak =−30 nT, weak activity) in average Dst profiles after shocks are, probably, a consequence of the energy injection in the magnetosphere being driven by different
interplanetary southward magnetic structures. A statistical distribution of geomagnetic activity levels following interplanetary
shocks was also obtained. It was observed that during solar maximum, 36% of interplanetary shocks were followed by intense
(Dst≤−100 nT) and 28% by moderate (−50≤Dst <−100 nT) geomagnetic activity. During solar minimum, 13% and 33% of the shocks were followed by intense and moderate geomagnetic
activity, respectively. Thus, during solar maximum a higher relative number of interplanetary shocks might be followed by
intense geomagnetic activity than during solar minimum. One can extrapolate, for forecasting goals, that during a whole solar
cycle a shock has a probability of around 50–60% to be followed by intense/moderate geomagnetic activity. 相似文献

Network magnetic fields, ephemeral active regions, and intranetwork magnetic fields are illustrated and discussed in several contexts. First, they are presented in relation to the appearance and disappearance of magnetic flux. Second, their properties in common with all solar magnetic features are discussed. Third, their distinguishing characteristics are emphasized. Lastly, their interactions are illustrated.Network magnetic fields are no longer considered to be just the aged remnants of active regions. The network is the dynamic product of the merging and cancelling of intranetwork fields, ephemeral regions, and the remnants of active regions. Intranetwork fields are magnetic fields of mixed polarity that appear to originate continuously from localized source sites in between the network. The intranetwork magnetic fields are characterized by flow of successive fragments in approximately radial patterns away from their apparent source sites and by the relative weakness of their magnetic fields. Ephemeral active regions are small, new bipoles that grow as a unit or a succession of bipolar units and whose poles move in opposite directions from their apparent site of origin. The Roccamonfina volcano is characterised by two stages of volcanic activity that are separated by volcano-tectonic caldera
collapses. Ultrapotassic leucite-bearing rocks are confined to the pre-caldera stage and display geochemical characteristics
similar to those of other volcanoes in the Roman Province. After the major sector collapse of the volcano, occurred at ca.
400 ka, shoshonitic rocks erupted from cinder cones and domes both within the caldera and on the external flanks of the pre-caldera
Roccamonfina volcano. On the basis of new trace element and Sr–Nd–Pb isotope data, we show that the Roccamonfina shoshonitic
rocks are distinct from shoshonites of the Northern Roman Province, but are very similar to those of the Neapolitan volcanoes.
The last phases of volcanic activity erupted sub-alkaline magmas as enclaves in trachytic domes, and as lavas within the Monte
Santa Croce dome. Ultrapotassic rocks of the pre-caldera composite volcano are plagioclase-bearing leucitites characterised
by high levels of incompatible trace elements with an orogenic signature having troughs at Ba, Ta, Nb, and Ti, and peaks at
Cs, K, Th, U, and Pb. Initial values of 87Sr/86Sr range from 0.70926 to 0.70999, 143Nd/144Nd ranges from 0.51213 to 0.51217, while the lead isotope rations vary between 18.788–18.851 for 206Pb/204Pb, 15.685–15.701 for 207Pb/204Pb, and 39.048–39.076 for 208Pb/204Pb. Shoshonites show a similar pattern of trace element depletions and enrichments to the earlier ultrapotassic leucite-bearing
rocks but have a larger degree of differentiation and lower concentrations of incompatible trace elements. On the other hand,
shoshonitic rocks have Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes consistently different than pre-caldera ultrapotassic leucite-bearing rocks.
87Sr/86Sr ranges from 0.70665 to 0.70745, 143Nd/144Nd ranges from 0.51234 to 0.51238, 206Pb/204Pb ranges from 18.924 to 19.153, 207Pb/204Pb ranges from 15.661 to 15.694, and 208Pb/204Pb ranges from 39.084 to 39.212. High-K calc-alkaline samples have intermediate isotopic values between ultrapotassic plagioclase
leucitites and shoshonites, but the lowest levels of incompatible trace element contents. It is argued that ultrapotassic
magmas were generated in a modified lithospheric mantle after crustal-derived metasomatism. Interaction between the metasomatic
agent and lithospheric upper mantle produced a low-melting point metasomatised veined network. The partial melting of the
veins alone produced pre-caldera leucite-bearing ultrapotassic magmas. It was possibly triggered by either post-collisional
isotherms relaxation or increasing T°C due increasing heat flow through slab tears. Shoshonitic magmas were generated by further melting, at higher temperature,
of the same metasomatic assemblage with addition 10–20% of OIB-like astenospheric mantle material. We suggest that addition
of astenospheric upper mantle material from foreland mantle, flowing through slab tearing after collision was achieved.

We developed a source detection algorithm based on the Minimal Spanning Tree (MST), that is a graph-theoretical method useful for finding clusters in a given set of points. This algorithm is applied to γ-ray bi-dimensional images where the points correspond to the arrival direction of photons, and the possible sources are associated with the regions where they clusterize. Some filters to select these clusters and to reduce the spurious detections are introduced. An empirical study of the statistical properties of MST on random fields is carried out in order to derive some criteria to estimate the best filter values. We also introduce two parameters useful to verify the goodness of candidate sources. To show how the MST algorithm works in practice, we present an application to an EGRET observation of the Virgo field, at high Galactic latitude and with a low and rather uniform background, in which several sources are detected. 相似文献

Quantitative environmental justice (EJ) research has relied on aggregated data from census units to determine disproportionate hazard exposure. Additionally, variables typically used to analyze ethnic inequities in exposure (e.g., percent Hispanic) are too broad and assume a degree of homogeneity that may not exist, given the diversity of ethnic minority populations. We address these limitations through a study that utilizes primary household level survey data and cancer risk estimates from the National-Scale Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) to analyze intra-ethnic inequities in exposure to vehicular air pollutants in the Miami metropolitan area, Florida. Our analysis disaggregates the Hispanic category based on five characteristics (language proficiency, U.S. citizenship, nativity, unemployment status, and national origin) and finds that risk burdens are significantly higher for Hispanic respondents who are foreign-born, unemployed, and of Cuban origin. Findings highlight the advantages of downscaling EJ analyses to the household level and considering intra-ethnic heterogeneity in EJ research and policy. 相似文献
