The solar wind conditions at one astronomical unit (AU) can be strongly disturbed by interplanetary coronal mass ejections
(ICMEs). A subset, called magnetic clouds (MCs), is formed by twisted flux ropes that transport an important amount of magnetic
flux and helicity, which is released in CMEs. At 1 AU from the Sun, the magnetic structure of MCs is generally modeled by
neglecting their expansion during the spacecraft crossing. However, in some cases, MCs present a significant expansion. We
present here an analysis of the huge and significantly expanding MC observed by the Wind spacecraft during 9 – 10 November 2004. This MC was embedded in an ICME. After determining an approximate orientation for
the flux rope using the minimum variance method, we obtain a precise orientation of the cloud axis by relating its front and
rear magnetic discontinuities using a direct method. This method takes into account the conservation of the azimuthal magnetic
flux between the inbound and outbound branches and is valid for a finite impact parameter (i.e., not necessarily a small distance between the spacecraft trajectory and the cloud axis). The MC is also studied using dynamic
models with isotropic expansion. We have found (6.2±1.5)×1020 Mx for the axial flux and (78±18)×1020 Mx for the azimuthal flux. Moreover, using the direct method, we find that the ICME is formed by a flux rope (MC) followed
by an extended coherent magnetic region. These observations are interpreted by considering the existence of a previously larger
flux rope, which partially reconnected with its environment in the front. We estimate that the reconnection process started
close to the Sun. These findings imply that the ejected flux rope is progressively peeled by reconnection and transformed
to the observed ICME (with a remnant flux rope in the front part). 相似文献

Glacial tills are highly compressible soils composed of loosely cemented sandy silt particles. Their role, for instance, as initial filler materials in geo-technical projects along temperate glacier regions warrant a systematic evaluation of their compressive characteristics. As such, we carry out a series of onedimensional compression tests on re-compacted glacial till samples obtained from Tianmo Gully, Tibet, with the aims of evaluating their compressive behavior under controlled initial stress conditions. The yield stress was determined from the void ratio versus consolidation pressure(e-log) planes. Its compression and swelling behaviors were observed during the primary and secondary compressions of the consolidation tests. From the compression curves, a correlation can be found between the consolidation stress and the void index. In addition, we find that the compression curves of glacial tills collapse into a single curve when normalized by the compression index. The experimental results in this study provide a basic understanding of the compression characteristics of the glacial tills in Tibet, China. 相似文献

In order to decide whether the seeing conditions at SAAO/Sutherland justify the erection of a 3.5 m telescope and also to compare Sutherland with the Gamsberg/Namibia site, a seeing campaign covering 15 months has been carried out. For direct comparison with the results of the seeing campaign at Gamsberg twenty years before the same QUESTAR telescope was employed. The seeing is determined by the scattering of the star-trail exposed on a film in the focal plane of the telescope. The campaign commenced in February 1992. Up to May 1993, data for 204 nights, that is 47.3% of the total number of nights, were collected. Due to wind speeds above 30 km h-1, 25 out of the 204 nights were not considered in the final reduction. The useful 179 nights are evenly distributed over the campaign period. The median seeing value for the whole period is = 0.52. There are differences during the year: the best season gives = 0.42, the worst = 0.67. Each night was divided into three intervals, although data for each of the three intervals were not always available. Generally, there is an improvement in the seeing during the course of a night. The results are compared to the seeing values of Gamsberg/Namibia and ESO/La Silla. 相似文献

The study of climate changes in India and search for robust evidences are issues of concern specially when it is known that
poor people are very vulnerable to climate changes. Due to the vast size of India and its complex geography, climate in this
part of the globe has large spatial and temporal variations. Important weather events affecting India are floods and droughts,
monsoon depressions and cyclones, heat waves, cold waves, prolonged fog and snowfall. Results of this comprehensive study
based on observed data and model reanalyzed fields indicate that in the last century, the atmospheric surface temperature
in India has enhanced by about 1 and 1.1°C during winter and post-monsoon months respectively. Also decrease in the minimum
temperature during summer monsoon and its increase during post-monsoon months have created a large difference of about 0.8°C
in the seasonal temperature anomalies which may bring about seasonal asymmetry and hence changes in atmospheric circulation.
Opposite phases of increase and decrease in the minimum temperatures in the southern and northern regions of India respectively
have been noticed in the interannual variability. In north India, the minimum temperature shows sharp decrease of its magnitude
between 1955 and 1972 and then sharp increase till date. But in south India, the minimum temperature has a steady increase.
The sea surface temperatures (SST) of Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal also show increasing trend. Observations indicate occurrence
of more extreme temperature events in the east coast of India in the recent past. During summer monsoon months, there is a
decreasing (increasing) trend in the frequency of depressions (low pressure areas). In the last century the frequency of occurrence
of cyclonic storms shows increasing trend in the month of November. In addition there is increase in the number of severe
cyclonic storms crossing Indian Coast. Analysis of rainfall amount during different seasons indicate decreasing tendency in
the summer monsoon rainfall over Indian landmass and increasing trend in the rainfall during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon

Independent methods of geological and molecular-biological chronologies have made it possible to define generally corresponding
stages in the geological and biological evolution of the environments and communities of Lake Baikal since the Late Cretaceous,
i.e., during the last 70 myr. All the abiotic elements drastically changed during geological evolution, with destruction of
existing and formation of new natural complexes. Nevertheless, some specific zones retained relicts of former settings. The
resulting present-day natural complex includes elements of different ages and geneses. Similar to different natural zones
of the present-day Earth, which are populated by different biocoenoses, stages in the development of abiotic elements are
also characterized by different faunal and floral assemblages. Some taxa were replaced by others, and the resulting aqueous
biota of Lake Baikal includes different-age and ecologically different elements. The oldest groups of Baikal organisms appeared
approximately 70 Ma ago, although the largest proportion of the lake biota started forming 4–3 Ma ago in response to the most
drastic changes in the abiotic elements of the environment. The youngest taxa appeared 1.8 to 0.15 Ma ago, i.e., during the
period when superdeep lake environments and mountainous glaciations were developing. The chronological coincidence of main
stages in development of abiotic and biotic elements of the nature indicates their relationships. Particular transformations
of abiotic elements and the probable mechanism of their influence on the evolution of living communities are also considered. 相似文献

We consider the three-dimensional bounded motion of a test particle around razor-thin disk configurations, by focusing on the adiabatic invariance of the vertical action associated with disk-crossing orbits. We find that it leads to an approximate third integral of motion predicting envelopes of the form \(Z(R)\propto [\varSigma (R)]^{-1/3}\), where R is the radial galactocentric coordinate, Z is the z-amplitude (vertical amplitude) of the orbit and \(\varSigma \) represents the surface mass density of the thin disk. This third integral, which was previously formulated for the case of flattened 3D configurations, is tested for a variety of trajectories in different thin-disk models. 相似文献

Preservation of biological information in thermal spring deposits: developing a strategy for the search for fossil life on Mars 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Current interpretations of the early history of Mars suggest many similarities with the early Earth and therefore raise the possibility that the Archean and Proterozoic history of life on Earth could have a counterpart on Mars. Terrestrial experience suggests that, with techniques that can be employed remotely, ancient springs, including thermal springs, could well yield important information. By delivering water and various dissolved species to the sunlit surface of Mars, springs very likely created an environment suitable for life, which could have been difficult, if not impossible, to attain elsewhere. The chemical and temperature gradients associated with thermal springs sort organisms into sharply delineated, distinctive and different communities, and so diverse organisms are concentrated into relatively small areas in a predictable and informative fashion. A wide range of metabolic strategies are concentrated into small areas, thus furnishing a useful and representative sampling of the existing biota. Mineral-charged springwaters frequently deposit chemical precipitates of silica and/or carbonate which incorporate microorganisms and preserve them as fossils. The juxtaposition of stream valley headwaters with volcanoes and impact craters on Mars strongly implies that subsurface heating of groundwater created thermal springs. On Earth, thermal springs create distinctive geomorphic features and chemical signatures which can be detected by remote sensing. Spring deposits can be quite different chemically from adjacent rocks. Individual springs can be hundreds of meters wide, and complexes of springs occupy areas up to several kilometers wide. Benthic microbial mats and the resultant stromatolites occupy a large fraction of the available area. The relatively high densities of fossils and microbial mat fabrics within these deposits make them highly prospective in any search for morphological evidence of life, and there are examples of microbial fossils in spring deposits as old as 300 Myr. 相似文献
