The decrease and degradation of the tropical forests affect not only the production of timber but also the global environment in a large scale. The ability of soil to sustain and its supply of nutrients to a growing forest are controlled by a complex of biogeochemical processes. The purpose of the present study aims to assess the degraded forest fringe areas, to promote plantations of various types and to evaluate their impacts on the soil nutrients and carbon content accumulation. The soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient content were evaluated and compared between plantations of mixed native species (MNS), some native tree species as Shorea robusta, Dalbergia sissoo, Dendrocalamus spp., certain agro‐forestry species and some exotic varieties. The impacts of the plantations on the SOC and the nutrients were firstly analyzed through comprehensive chemical analyses and the results were compared with the soil samples collected prior to plantation forestry. Significant changes were observed in SOC content, in nutrients, and in amounts of exchangeable cations. Soil carbon levels were highest under the MNS, Dendrocalamus and Tectona grandis stands and lowest under D. sissoo and Terminalia arjuna. Total N showed highest levels under Dendrocalamus and Pongamia pinnata and significantly higher in stands of native species; lowest total N level was observed in D. sissoo plantations. The C/N ratios of the soil varied between 9.2 and 13.5 among the exchangeable cations. Ca2+ recorded the maximum levels and Na+ showed the lowest levels.  相似文献

Deep unconsolidated sediments in the Mississippi embayment will influence ground motions from earthquakes in the New Madrid seismic zone. Shear wave velocity profiles of these sediments are important input parameters for modeling wave propagation and site response in this region. Low-frequency, active-source surface wave velocity measurements were performed to develop small-strain shear wave velocity (VS) profiles at eleven deep soil sites in the Mississippi embayment, from north of New Madrid, Missouri to Memphis, Tennessee. A servo-hydraulic, low-frequency source was used to excite surface wave energy to wavelengths of 600 m, resulting in VS profiles to depths of over 200 m. The average VS profile calculated from the eleven sites is in good agreement with common reference VS profiles that have been used in seismic hazard studies of this region. The variability in VS profiles is shown to be associated with changes in formation depth and thickness from site-to-site. Using lithologic information at each site, average formation velocities were developed and compared to previous studies. We found average VS values of about 193 m/s for alluvial deposits, 400 m/s for the Upper Claiborne formations, and 685 m/s for the Memphis Sand formation.  相似文献

This paper presents initial results from a study of factors that inhibit or enhance hard coral recovery in rubble fields created by blast fishing in Komodo National Park and Bunaken National Park, Indonesia. Within nine sites monitored since 1998, there was no significant natural recovery. Levels of potential source coral larvae were assessed with settlement tiles in the rubble fields and in nearby high coral cover sites. Rubble movement was measured and shown to be detrimental to small scleractinians, especially in high current areas. In shallow water (2-6 m deep), rubble is often overgrown by soft corals and corallimorpharians, which inhibit hard coral survival. There is increased scleractinian recruitment in quadrats cleared of soft coral, and Acropora nubbins transplanted into soft coral fields suffer greater mortality than those transplanted above the soft coral canopy. Gaining an understanding of the prognosis for coral recovery is essential not only in order to assess the long-term impacts of blast fishing, but also to improve management decisions about protection of intact reefs and potential restoration of damaged areas.  相似文献

Traditionally, the overall diluting capacity of an estuary is characterized using a coefficient of longitudinal dispersion, Kxe, which is given by the ratio of the dispersive flux of a dissolved substance to its tidally averaged longitudinal gradient. A steady-state model, which assumes a balance between the dispersive and non-dispersive fluxes and an exponential increase in estuary cross-sectional area towards the sea, has been used to derive expressions for the axial salinity distribution and the dispersive flux of salt. The model was set up assuming either a constant dispersion coefficient along the estuary or one that increased with distance towards the sea. By comparing salinity predictions with data from five UK estuaries, estimates were made of the maximum dispersive salt flux and the corresponding maximum salinity gradient for each system. The results indicated that there was an approximately linear relation between the fluxes and gradients, and the slope of a line plotted through the origin provided an estimate of a common Kxe for all five estuaries. The magnitude of Kxe was found to be about 90 m2 s–1 with a standard deviation of approximately ±32 m2 s–1. It is concluded that a representative value of 100 m2 s–1 for Kxe is a reasonable first choice when setting up a cross-sectionally averaged estuary model. The results also showed that larger systems, such as the Thames, had lower salinity gradients and lower dispersive salt fluxes, whilst smaller estuaries displayed the opposite characteristics. The model was used to predict the variation in the non-advective flux of salt along an estuary. The distribution was found to be similar to the corresponding flux distribution estimated from observations at the seaward end of the Tees estuary, despite appreciable spatial variations in the individual flux components. Allowing for a small decrease in freshwater flow, the model indicated that there was a decrease in the maximum dispersive flux between neap and spring tides. It is argued that such a reduction in flux can result in a seaward shift in the salinity distribution to a region of greater cross-section, where the freshwater transport per unit area again balances the reduced upstream dispersive flux, as found in the neap to spring response in the Tees estuary.Responsible Editor: Hans Burchard  相似文献

This demand calls for enhanced GPS algorithms that accommodate high degrees of signal attenuation and multipath effects unique to the "urban channel." Abstract— Concentrations of the trace elements Mg, Al, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba and Ce were determined by ion microprobe mass spectrometry in 60 individual silicon carbide (SiC) grains (in addition, Nb and Nd were determined in 20 of them), from separate KJH (size range 3.4–5.9 μm) of the Murchison carbonaceous meteorite, whose C-, N- and Si-isotopic compositions have been measured before (Hoppe et al., 1994) and provide evidence that these grains are of stellar origin. The selected SiC grains represent all previously recognized subgroups: mainstream (20 < 12C/13C < 120; 200 < 14N/15N; Si isotopes on slope 1.34 line), grains A (12C/13C < 3.5), grains B (3.5 < 12C/13C < 10), grains X (15N excesses, large 28Si excesses) and grains Y (150 < 12C/13C < 260; Si isotopes on slope 0.35 line). Data on these grains are compared with measurements on fine-grained SiC fractions. Trace-element patterns reflect both the condensation behavior of individual elements and the source composition of the stellar atmospheres. A detailed discussion of the condensation of trace elements in SiC from C-rich stellar atmospheres is given in a companion paper by Lodders and Fegley (1995). Elements such as Mg, Al, Ca, Fe and Sr are depleted because their compounds are more volatile than SiC. Elements whose compounds are believed to be more refractory than SiC can also be depleted due to condensation and removal prior to SiC condensation. Among the refractory elements, however, the heavy elements from Y to Ce (and Nd) are systematically enriched relative to Ti and V, indicating enrichments by up to a factor of 14 of the s-process elements relative to elements lighter than Fe. Such enrichments are expected if N-type carbon stars (thermally pulsing AGB stars) are the main source of circumstellar SiC grains. Large grains are less enriched than small grains, possibly because they are from different AGB stars. The trace-element patterns of subgroups such as groups A and B and grains X can at least qualitatively be understood if grains A and B come from J-type carbon stars (known to be lacking in s-process enhancements shown by N-type carbon stars) or carbon stars that had not experienced much dredge-up of He-shell material and if grains X come from supernovae. However, a remaining puzzle is how stars become carbon stars without much accompanying dredge-up of s-process elements.  相似文献
