We report laboratory studies on the 0.8 MeV proton irradiation of ices composed of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sulfuric acid monohydrate (H2SO4·H2O), and sulfuric acid tetrahydrate (H2SO4·4H2O) between 10 and 180 K. Using infrared spectroscopy, we identify the main radiation products as H2O, SO2, (S2O3)x, H3O+, , and . At high radiation doses, we find that H2SO4 molecules are destroyed completely and that H2SO4·H2O is formed on subsequent warming. This hydrate is significantly more stable to radiolytic destruction than pure H2SO4, falling to an equilibrium relative abundance of 50% of its original value on prolonged irradiation. Unlike either pure H2SO4 or H2SO4·H2O, the loss of H2SO4·4H2O exhibits a strong temperature dependence, as the tetrahydrate is essentially unchanged at the highest irradiation temperatures and completely destroyed at the lowest ones, which we speculate is due to a combination of radiolytic destruction and amorphization. Furthermore, at the lower temperatures it is clear that irradiation causes the tetrahydrate spectrum to transition to one that closely resembles the monohydrate spectrum. Extrapolating our results to Europa’s surface, we speculate that the variations in SO2 concentrations observed in the chaotic terrains are a result of radiation processing of lower hydration states of sulfuric acid and that the monohydrate will remain stable on the surface over geological times, while the tetrahydrate will remain stable in the warmer regions but be destroyed in the colder regions, unless it can be reformed by other processes, such as thermal reactions induced by diurnal cycling. 相似文献

Results of a survey of instrumentation and detector systems, either currently deployed or planned for use at telescopes larger than 3.5 m, in ground based observatories world-wide, are presented. This survey revealed a number of instrumentation design trends at optical, near, and mid-infrared wavelengths. Some of the most prominent trends include the development of vastly larger optical detector systems (> 109 pixels) than anything built to date, and the frequent use of mosaics of near-infrared detectors – something that was quite rare only a decade ago in astronomy. Some future science applications for detectors are then explored, in an attempt to build a bridge between current detectors and what will be needed to support the research ambitions of astronomers in the future. 相似文献

Abstract The detailed characteristics of a CASPII warm frontal passage are presented in this article. This storm, Intensive Operating Period (IOP) 13 (February 26–27, 1992), was observed in detail with an array of diverse instruments. It has the advantage over earlier freezing precipitation studies of having simultaneous, in situ and remote sensing measurements by aircraft and ground‐based Doppler radar. The associated precipitation was in the form of banded structures parallel to the front. Within these bands were embedded precipitation cores, some parallel to the band, some perpendicular. The warm front itself was characterized by major perturbations in its kinematic and thermodynamic features. The cores oriented parallel to the front were the result of embedded convection generated, at least in part, by the irregularities in the frontal surface. The cores oriented perpendicular to the front were closely associated with the 0°C isotherm on the underside of the frontal inversion. Precipitation phase changes played a significant role in the occurrence of wide near 0°C regions, both vertically and horizontally. These regions had a profound influence on the observed precipitation types and led to complex precipitation‐thermodynamic‐dynamic interactions. Instabilities produced by these interactions are seen in wave‐like features observed by the Doppler radar in these regions, both parallel and perpendicular to the frontal zone. 相似文献

Twinning elements of reality gains a growing interest in support of decision-making, learning, and simulations: a single and shared model should provide a unique integrative basis for managing assets of any replica of the real world. From a technical viewpoint, sharing and opening information requires both an exchange format and a high degree of freedom and flexibility. It should allow an important number of users to manage this information, to modify it, etc. Storing and manipulating spatial information concerning the urban built context currently focuses on ensuring consistency thanks to relational databases and predefined schemas. Following a paradigm shift from a relational database to a NoSQL database, a schema validation middleware is proposed to improve the flexibility of storage by conceding a share of its consistency. The flexibility improvements thus provide users a common basis that is able to evolve all along the lifecycle of their models and applications as required for twinning things. It allows users and their applications to take advantage of new storage features such as common: versioning, partitioning, prioritization, applications profiles, etc. The middleware and their new capabilities are illustrated thanks to the CityJSON encoding and its simplified schema for a document-oriented database. 相似文献

Assessing potential repositories for geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide using numerical models can be complicated, costly,
and time-consuming, especially when faced with the challenge of selecting a repository from a multitude of potential repositories.
This paper presents a set of simple analytical equations (model), based on the work of previous researchers, that could be
used to evaluate the suitability of candidate repositories for subsurface sequestration of carbon dioxide. We considered the
injection of carbon dioxide at a constant rate into a confined saline aquifer via a fully perforated vertical injection well.
The validity of the analytical model was assessed via comparison with the TOUGH2 numerical model. The metrics used in comparing
the two models include (1) spatial variations in formation pressure and (2) vertically integrated brine saturation profile.
The analytical model and TOUGH2 show excellent agreement in their results when similar input conditions and assumptions are
applied in both. The analytical model neglects capillary pressure and the pressure dependence of fluid properties. However,
simulations in TOUGH2 indicate that little error is introduced by these simplifications. Sensitivity studies indicate that
the agreement between the analytical model and TOUGH2 depends strongly on (1) the residual brine saturation, (2) the difference
in density between carbon dioxide and resident brine (buoyancy), and (3) the relationship between relative permeability and
brine saturation. The results achieved suggest that the analytical model is valid when the relationship between relative permeability
and brine saturation is linear or quasi-linear and when the irreducible saturation of brine is zero or very small. 相似文献

High-pressure metamorphism in the Pohorje Mountains of Slovenia (Austroalpine unit, Eastern Alps) affected N-MORB type metabasic
and metapelitic lithologies. Thermodynamic calculations and equilibrium phase diagrams of kyanite–phengite-bearing eclogites
reveal PT conditions of >2.1 GPa at T<750°C, but within the stability field of quartz. Metapelitic eclogite country rocks contain the assemblage garnet + phengite
+ kyanite + quartz, for which calculated peak pressure conditions are in good agreement with results obtained from eclogite
samples. The eclogites contain a single population of spherical zircon with a low Th/U ratio. Combined constraints on the
age of metamorphism come from U/Pb zircon as well as garnet–whole rock and mineral–mineral Sm-Nd analyses from eclogites.
A coherent cluster of single zircon analyses yields a 206Pb/238U age of 90.7±1.0 Ma that is in good agreement with results from Sm-Nd garnet–whole rock regression of 90.7±3.9 and 90.1±2.0 Ma
(εNd: +8) for two eclogite samples. The agreement between U-Pb and Sm-Nd age data strongly suggests an age of approximately
90 Ma for the pressure peak of the eclogites in the Pohorje Mountains. The presence of garnet, omphacite and quartz inclusions
in unfractured zircon indicates high-pressure rather than ultrahigh pressure conditions. The analysed metapelite sample yields
a Sm-Nd garnet–whole rock scatterchron age of 97±15 Ma. These data probably support a single P-T loop for mafic and pelitic
lithologies of the Pohorje area and a late Cretaceous high-pressure event that affected the entire easternmost Austroalpine
basement including the Koralpe and Saualpe eclogite type locality in the course of the complex collision of the Apulian microplate
