Hematite is an iron oxide that is very important for the study of climatic evolution of Mars. It can occur in three forms: nanophase (dark purple), fine-grained (red) and coarse-grained (gray).In a previous work, we studied the influence of particle size and shape on the infrared spectra (in the wavelength range 6.25-50 μm) of submicron red hematite particles and found that bulk optical constants did not fit the spectra of very fine particles with several classes of models.In the present paper, we derive bulk optical constants of a sample of the same parent material of hematite already used in a previous work in order to determine the particulate optical constants. As a first result we find that, also in this case, bulk and particulate optical constants are different from each other. Furthermore, we show that these bulk optical constants, although derived starting from the same parent material of hematite and used with a model adopting the laboratory measured grain size distribution of the sample, cannot be used to reproduce the spectra of submicron particles. Our results can help the scientific community to appropriately model the contribution of hematite submicron grains to the martian dust for a better understanding of the geologic evolution of the planet. 相似文献

Rail transit continues to be a popular alternative for cities as a tool for alleviating automobile congestion and for redeveloping
areas into transit and pedestrian-friendly environments. Ideally, rail transit will draw trips away from cars, but the quantitative
work that tests this notion has often been either case studies of neighborhoods, in which conclusions are tough to generalize,
or citywide comparisons where important spatial variation is lost in aggregation. This study seeks to narrow this gap in the
research by using multivariate analysis of covariance to isolate the effect of covariates and cities on changes in work trip
mode choice at the traffic analysis zone (TAZ) level for nine cities between 1990 and 2000. The results suggest differences
by city in the change at the TAZ level of the proportion of people driving alone and taking transit. Increases in transit
usage were associated with cities that built rail transit, while increases in automobile commuting and decreases in transit

New theories to explain how tides and river flow determine estuarine bathymetries have been developed. The range of validity of these theories has been subsequently assessed against a recently available observational data set.Success in reproducing the evolution of estuarine bathymetries that has occurred over the last 10 000 years provides the basis for the translation, here, of these theories into new typologies. These then provide reference frameworks to enhance our perspective on existing morphologies and identify ‘anomalous’ estuaries. Further refinement of these new theories requires analyses of causal factors responsible for such anomalies drawing on classical morphological experience. These frameworks can also be used for calculating likely future bathymetric adjustments for prescribed changes in mean sea level, tidal amplitudes, river flow and sediment supply. 相似文献

Characterization of the Structure of River-Bed Gravels Using Two-Dimensional Fractal Analysis 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
This paper is concerned with the application of fractal analysis to understand the structure of water-worked gravel-bed river surfaces. High resolution digital elevation models, acquired using digital photogrammetric methods, allowed the application of two-dimensional fractal methods. Previous gravel-bed river studies have been based upon sampled profiles and hence one-dimensional fractal characterisation. After basic testing that bed elevation increments are Gaussian, the paper uses two-dimensional variogram surfaces to derive directionally dependent estimates of fractal dimension. The results identify mixed fractal behavior with two characteristic fractal bands, one associated with the subgrain scale and one associated with the grain scale. The subgrain scale characteristics were isotropic and sensitive to decisions made during the data collection process. Thus, it was difficult to differentiate whether these characteristics were real facets of the surfaces studied. The second band was anisotropic and not sensitive to data collection issues. Fractal dimensions were greater in the downstream direction than in other directions suggesting that the effects of water working are to alter the level of surface organisation, by increasing surface irregularity and hence roughness. This is an important observation as it means that water-worked surfaces may have a distinct anisotropic signal, revealed when using a fractal type analysis. 相似文献

We investigate the properties of optically passive spirals and dusty red galaxies in the A901/2 cluster complex at redshift ∼0.17 using rest-frame near-ultraviolet–optical spectral energy distributions, 24-μm infrared data and Hubble Space Telescope morphologies from the STAGES data set. The cluster sample is based on COMBO-17 redshifts with an rms precision of σ cz ≈ 2000 km s−1 . We find that 'dusty red galaxies' and 'optically passive spirals' in A901/2 are largely the same phenomenon, and that they form stars at a substantial rate, which is only four times lower than that in blue spirals at fixed mass. This star formation is more obscured than in blue galaxies and its optical signatures are weak. They appear predominantly in the stellar mass range of log M * /M⊙ =[10, 11] where they constitute over half of the star-forming galaxies in the cluster; they are thus a vital ingredient for understanding the overall picture of star formation quenching in clusters. We find that the mean specific star formation rate (SFR) of star-forming galaxies in the cluster is clearly lower than in the field, in contrast to the specific SFR properties of blue galaxies alone, which appear similar in cluster and field. Such a rich red spiral population is best explained if quenching is a slow process and morphological transformation is delayed even more. At log M * /M⊙ < 10 , such galaxies are rare, suggesting that their quenching is fast and accompanied by morphological change. Artificial residential waterways are now widespread in the world’s estuaries. We used the global mapping tool, Google Earth, to determine that there are nearly 4000 linear km of artificial waterways globally, covering an area of 270 km2. Residential waterways constructed as open, flow-through canal estates are at their greatest extent in North America (77% of global linear extent), where systems are typically longer and narrower, with more openings and dead-ends than systems elsewhere. The remaining canal estates are spread across all other continents except Antarctica: Asia (7%), Europe (7%), Oceania (7%), South America (0.9%), and Africa (0.6%). A relatively recent design change from open canals to artificial estuarine lakes with tidal barriers has occurred on all continents except Africa, most extensively in Australia (14 km2 area, 57 independent systems). The extremely large expansion in artificial residential waterways aimed at increasing opportunities for waterfront living by humans has also modified and expanded estuarine habitat available to aquatic biota. Research can best underpin planning and management of these types of waterways by focussing on their value as habitat and their provision of other goods and services. 相似文献

The outer edges of Saturn's A and B rings, at 2.27 Rs and 1.95 Rs, have been examined using data acquired by four Voyager experiments. The shapes and kinematics of these features are influenced by their proximity to strong low-order Lindblad resonances. The data for the A-ring edge are consistent with a seven-loded radial distortion of amplitude 6.7 ± 1.5 km which rotates with the mass-weighted mean angular velocity of the coorbital satellite system. The B-ring edge has essentially a double-lobed figure of radial amplitude 74 ± 9 km which rotates with the mean motion of Mimas, though there is an indication that it is not completely described withe a simple Saturn-centered ellipse. An upper limit of 10 m has been placed on the vertical thickness in the unperturbed region of the B ring. 相似文献
