A study investigated the effect of truck‐traffic intensity and road water‐content on the quality of runoff water from unsealed forest roads. Three sections of a gravel‐surfaced forest road were instrumented and exposed to low and high levels of truck traffic during wet winter conditions and dry summer conditions between July 2001 and December 2002. Rainfall, runoff, road moisture, and traffic were measured continuously, and suspended and bedload sediments were integrated measurements over 2‐week site‐service intervals. The median suspended sediment concentration from the three road segments under low truck‐traffic conditions (less than nine return truck passes prior to a storm) was 269 mg l?1, increasing 2·7‐fold to a median of 725 mg l?1 under high truck‐traffic conditions (greater than or equal to nine return truck passes prior to a storm). These concentrations, and increases due to traffic, are substantially less than most previously reported values. When these data are expressed as modified universal soil loss equation (MUSLE) erodibility values K, accounting for differences in rainfall energy, site characteristics and runoff, high traffic resulted in a road surface that was four times more erodible than the same road under low traffic conditions. Using multiple regression, traffic explained 36% of the variation in MUSLE erodibility, whereas road water content was not significant in the model. There was little difference in the erodibility of the road when trafficked in low water‐content compared with high water‐content conditions (MUSLE K values of 0·0084 versus 0·0080 respectively). This study shows that, for a good quality well‐maintained gravel forest road, the level of truck traffic affects the sediment concentration of water discharging from the road, whereas the water content of the road at the time of that traffic does not (note that traffic is not allowed during runoff events in Victoria). These conclusions are conditional upon the road being adequately maintained so that trafficking does not compromise the lateral drainage of the road profile. This article focuses on embodied geographies of food, belonging and hope for a group of migrant women in the small city of Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand. We explore the complex nature of multiculturalism as it is produced via place and food-sharing. Interviews and cooking sessions with 11 migrant women in Hamilton, each from a different country, prompted a range of emotions highlighting the numerous ways in which migrant women feel that they belong, or do not belong, to their ‘old home’, and their ‘new home’. Furthermore, the sharing of food and feelings helps establish affective ties between women migrants – across ethnic differences – and to the place of Hamilton. These hopeful intercultural encounters – discussed and digested in kitchens – are moments of reciprocity and mutual recognition between ethnically and culturally ‘different’ women. This account provides a means of not only highlighting the difficulties that migrant women face, but also the possibilities of multicultural place sharing. 相似文献

The gradient-based similarity approach removes turbulent fluxes as governing parameters and replaces them with vertical gradients of mean wind speed and potential temperature. As a result, the gradient Richardson number, Ri, appears as a stability parameter instead of the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter z/L (L is the Obukhov length). The gradient-based scaling is more appropriate for moderate and very stable conditions when the gradients are large and their errors are relatively small whereas z/L becomes ambiguous in these conditions because turbulent fluxes are small. However, the gradient-based formulation is faced with a problem related to the influence of Ri outliers: outliers with high values of Ri can exist in conditions that are really near-neutral. These outliers are mapped into the very stable range in plots in which Ri is the independent variable and may lead to spurious dependencies for bin-averaged data (spurious bin-averaging). This effect is quite large for functions that are steep for the gradient-based scaling. The present study uses the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) data to examine the problem and proposes two methods, conditional analysis and independent binning, to limit the influence of outliers on bin-averaging. A disadvantage of the conditional analysis is associated with eliminating outliers based on criteria that could be considered as subjective. The independent bin-averaging method does not have this disadvantage, but the scatter of the bin-averaged points is higher than for the conditional analysis, rendering data analysis and interpretation difficult. 相似文献

This paper surveys results of the comprehensive turbulent measurements in the stable boundary layer (SBL) made over the Arctic
pack ice during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA) in the Beaufort Gyre from October 1997 through
September 1998. Turbulent fluxes and mean meteorological data were continuously measured and reported hourly at five levels
on a 20-m main SHEBA tower. Eleven months of measurements during SHEBA cover a wide range of stability conditions, from the
weakly unstable regime to very stable stratification, and allow studying the SBL in detail.
A brief overview of the SBL regimes, the flux-profile relationships, the turbulent Prandtl number, and other parameters obtained

The effects of temperature, water stress, hydration–dehydration cycles and seed priming on the germination of Callitris verrucosa and Callitris preissii, two Australian semi-arid coniferous tree species, were investigated. Optimum germination occurred at 18°C, with a minimum germination time of 8–9 days for both species. At this temperature, germination was inhibited at osmotic potentials lower than −1·0 MPa, but the capacity to germinate at low osmotic stress increased as the temperature decreased. Seed priming and hydration–dehydration cycles did not reduce seed viability, and Callitris seeds appear to retain the physiological changes induced by short-term hydration, as the time to the onset of germination was decreased to about 3 days. The capacity of Callitris seeds for incremental germination is likely to increase overall germination success in a low rainfall environment. 相似文献

Throughout most of its geological evolution Etna has been characterized by the eruption of lava flows of a predominantly hawaiitic composition, but within the stratigraphical record there are four major sequences of pyroclastic materials: the Acireale tephra and lahars (˜100000 B.P.); the ‘lower tephra’ and Milo lahars (both ˜26000 B.P.); the Biancavilla ignimbrites (15–15500 B.P.) and the ‘upper tephra’ (˜5000–6000 B.P.). This paper reports investigations carried out on these deposits in order to determine their stratigraphy, petrology, sedimentology, and likely origins. Whereas the Biancavilla ignimbrites were generated when a more evolved, gas-charged magma (benmoreite) was being produced by the volcano, the other suites of pyroclastic deposits were erupted from hawaiitic magmas—similar to those that have characterized the volcano during historical times. These deposits resulted from two processes: violent strombolian activity producing lapilli-rich. coarse, but well-sorted sediments, and hydrovolcanism when the mixing of water and magma in the conduit, brought about more violently explosive activity, giving rise to highly fragmented, poorly sorted, airfall tephra and lahars. Conditions favouring hydrovolcanism occurred at times in the volcano's history when palaeoenvironment and palaeogeography were conducive to the retention of large amounts of surface and subsurface water. Although climates favouring the retention of water at high levels on the volcano have occurred on many occasions in the history of the volcano, at ˜26.000 and ˜5000-6000 B.P. these occurred in conjunction with a construct of sufficient height and suitable configuration to allow storage of water and give rise to hydrovolcanic activity. The nature of the mechanisms responsible for the emplacement of these hydrovolcanic deposits is considered and it is concluded that airfall is the most probable process. Finally, the implications of this research for the assessment of hazard are reviewed. 相似文献

Measurements of atmospheric turbulence made over the Arctic pack ice during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA) are used to determine the limits of applicability of Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (in the local scaling formulation) in the stable atmospheric boundary layer. Based on the spectral analysis of wind velocity and air temperature fluctuations, it is shown that, when both the gradient Richardson number, Ri, and the flux Richardson number, Rf, exceed a ‘critical value’ of about 0.20–0.25, the inertial subrange associated with the Richardson–Kolmogorov cascade dies out and vertical turbulent fluxes become small. Some small-scale turbulence survives even in this supercritical regime, but this is non-Kolmogorov turbulence, and it decays rapidly with further increasing stability. Similarity theory is based on the turbulent fluxes in the high-frequency part of the spectra that are associated with energy-containing/flux-carrying eddies. Spectral densities in this high-frequency band diminish as the Richardson–Kolmogorov energy cascade weakens; therefore, the applicability of local Monin–Obukhov similarity theory in stable conditions is limited by the inequalities Ri < Ri cr and Rf < Rf cr. However, it is found that Rf cr = 0.20–0.25 is a primary threshold for applicability. Applying this prerequisite shows that the data follow classical Monin–Obukhov local z-less predictions after the irrelevant cases (turbulence without the Richardson–Kolmogorov cascade) have been filtered out. 相似文献

Turbulent and mean meteorological data collected at five levels on a 20-m tower over the Arctic pack ice during the Surface
Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean experiment (SHEBA) are analyzed to examine different regimes of the stable boundary layer
(SBL). Eleven months of measurements during SHEBA cover a wide range of stability conditions, from the weakly unstable regime
to very stable stratification. Scaling arguments and our analysis show that the SBL can be classified into four major regimes:
(i) surface-layer scaling regime (weakly stable case), (ii) transition regime, (iii) turbulent Ekman layer, and (iv) intermittently
turbulent Ekman layer (supercritical stable regime). These four regimes may be considered as the basic states of the traditional
SBL. Sometimes these regimes, especially the last two, can be markedly perturbed by gravity waves, detached elevated turbulence
(‘upside down SBL’), and inertial oscillations. Traditional Monin–Obukhov similarity theory works well in the weakly stable
regime. In the transition regime, Businger–Dyer formulations work if scaling variables are re-defined in terms of local fluxes,
although stability function estimates expressed in these terms include more scatter compared to the surface-layer scaling.
As stability increases, the near-surface turbulence is affected by the turning effects of the Coriolis force (the turbulent
Ekman layer). In this regime, the surface layer, where the turbulence is continuous, may be very shallow (< 5 m). Turbulent
transfer near the critical Richardson number is characterized by small but still significant heat flux and negligible stress.
The supercritical stable regime, where the Richardson number exceeds a critical value, is associated with collapsed turbulence
and the strong influence of the earth’s rotation even near the surface. In the limit of very strong stability, the stress
is no longer a primary scaling parameter. 相似文献
