A regional model of the 3-D variation in seismic P -wave velocity structure in the crust of NW Europe has been compiled from wide-angle reflection/refraction profiles. Along each 2-D profile a velocity–depth function has been digitised at 5 km intervals. These 1-D velocity functions were mapped into three dimensions using ordinary kriging with weights determined to minimise the difference between digitised and interpolated values. An analysis of variograms of the digitised data suggested a radial isotropic weighting scheme was most appropriate. Horizontal dimensions of the model cells are optimised at 40 × 40 km and the vertical dimension at 1 km. The resulting model provides a higher resolution image of the 3-D variation in seismic velocity structure of the UK, Ireland and surrounding areas than existing models. The construction of the model through kriging allows the uncertainty in the velocity structure to be assessed. This uncertainty indicates the high density of data required to confidently interpolate the crustal velocity structure, and shows that for this region the velocity is poorly constrained for large areas away from the input data. 相似文献

The spatial distribution of discovered resources may not fully mimic the distribution of all such resources, discovered and
undiscovered, because the process of discovery is biased by accessibility factors (e.g., outcrops, roads, and lakes) and by
exploration criteria. In data-driven predictive models, the use of training sites (resource occurrences) biased by exploration
criteria and accessibility does not necessarily translate to a biased predictive map. However, problems occur when evidence
layers correlate with these same exploration factors. These biases then can produce a data-driven model that predicts known
occurrences well, but poorly predicts undiscovered resources.
Statistical assessment of correlation between evidence layers and map-based exploration factors is difficult because it is
difficult to quantify the “degree of exploration.” However, if such a degree-of-exploration map can be produced, the benefits
can be enormous. Not only does it become possible to assess this correlation, but it becomes possible to predict undiscovered,
instead of discovered, resources.
Using geothermal systems in Nevada, USA, as an example, a degree-of-exploration model is created, which then is resolved into
purely explored and unexplored equivalents, each occurring within coextensive study areas. A weights-of-evidence (WofE) model
is built first without regard to the degree of exploration, and then a revised WofE model is calculated for the “explored
fraction” only. Differences in the weights between the two models provide a correlation measure between the evidence and the
degree of exploration.
The data used to build the geothermal evidence layers are perceived to be independent of degree of exploration. Nevertheless,
the evidence layers correlate with exploration because exploration has preferred the same favorable areas identified by the
evidence patterns. In this circumstance, however, the weights for the “explored” WofE model minimize this bias. Using these
revised weights, posterior probability is extrapolated into unexplored areas to estimate undiscovered deposits. 相似文献

We explore a practical approach to earthquake early warning in southern California by determining a ground-motion period parameter τ c and a high-pass filtered displacement amplitude parameter Pd from the initial 3 s of the P waveforms recorded at the Southern California Seismic Network stations for earthquakes with M > 4.0. At a given site, we estimate the magnitude of an event from τ c and the peak ground-motion velocity ( PGV ) from Pd . The incoming three-component signals are recursively converted to ground acceleration, velocity and displacement. The displacements are recursively filtered with a one-way Butterworth high-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of 0.075 Hz, and a P -wave trigger is constantly monitored. When a trigger occurs, τ c and Pd are computed. We found the relationship between τ c and magnitude ( M ) for southern California, and between Pd and PGV for both southern California and Taiwan. These two relationships can be used to detect the occurrence of a major earthquake and provide onsite warning in the area around the station where onset of strong ground motion is expected within seconds after the arrival of the P wave. When the station density is high, the methods can be applied to multistation data to increase the robustness of onsite early warning and to add the regional warning approach. In an ideal situation, such warnings would be available within 10 s of the origin time of a large earthquake whose subsequent ground motion may last for tens of seconds. 相似文献

Taiwan is a region of rapid active tectonics, yet the study of the tectonic processes that shape the interior of the island is difficult due to the high rates of erosion and dense vegetation. We use digital topography to look for indications of active deformation preserved in the local geomorphology. In particular, anomalies in the regional pattern of drainage are used to infer zones of enhanced tectonic activity. The apparent anticlockwise rotation of major river systems in plan view indicates the presence of a diffuse zone of left-lateral shear running down the southeastern side of Taiwan. Asymmetries in the catchments of individual drainage basins show the influence of varying rates of uplift across southern Taiwan, with the most rapid uplift close to Taitung at the indentation point of the Luzon arc with the Chinese continental margin. Our interpretations, though based predominantly on remote-sensing observations, are consistent with the available field evidence. This study demonstrates the usefulness of drainage basins as tectonic markers in the quantification of regional strain and uplift, which may have wider applicability in other deforming parts of the world. 相似文献

We examined the abundance and distribution of Eleodes extricata (Tenebrionidae) in a semi-arid region of West Texas. During the 2-year study, climatic conditions were extreme but opposite, with 1997 being unusually wet and mild, and 1998 being unusually dry and hot. These conditions were associated with striking differences in the population structure of the beetles. Under identical pitfall-sampling efforts, we captured 1562 and 671 individuals in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Capture rates were lowest in grassland, and highest in sand shinnery oak, and within the latter, they were lowest in blowouts, intermediate along the edges of blowouts, and highest under vegetative cover. Sex ratios were consistently female-biased, and the degree of bias increased from spring through fall in both years. These increases were more pronounced in 1998, with the sex ratios of early and late sampling periods differing by over four-fold, from 1·15 to 5·00. Females were heavier than males, and the dry masses of both sexes increased from spring though fall in both years. As with sex ratios, these increases were more pronounced in 1998. Only the largest beetles survived the drought, illustrating how extreme conditions can exert especially strong directional selection, and affect sex ratios in populations with sexual size dimorphism. 相似文献
