An active region loop system was observed in a decaying active region for three hours by TRACE and BBSO in a joint campaign on September 27, 1998. Continuous mass motion was seen in Hα offband filtergrams throughout the three hours, and some UV loops were exhibited transient brightenings. We find that: (1) cool material was flowing along the loops at a speed of at least 20 km s?1. Further, in Hα red and blue wings, we see mass motion along different loops in opposite directions. This is the first report of a counter-streaming pattern of mass motion in an Hα loop system. (2) Transient brightenings of different UV loops at different times were observed at C?iv 1550 Å. These brightened UV loops were located in the same region and at the same altitudes as the Hα loops. The observations show a clear correlation between the transient brightenings of UV loops and mass motion in Hα loops. (3) Both footpoints of the loop system were located in regions of mixed magnetic polarities. Frequent micro-flares at one footpoint of the loops with small-scale brightenings spreading along the loop leg were observed before the brightening and rising of one C?iv loop. Similar to the case of a filament, the continuous mass motion along the loops seems important for maintaining the cool Hα loop system at coronal height. There may be an indication that the mass motion in cool Hα loops and the correlated transient brightening of the active region loops were due to the small-scale chromospheric magnetic reconnection at the footpoint regions of the loop system.
In situ measurements of stratospheric H2SO4 and HSO3vapors using passive chemical ionization mass spectrometry were made in October 1982 after the eruption of volcano El Chichon. Data were obtained between about 20 and 41 km showing [H2SO4 + HSO3] sum concentrations between about 104 and 2 × 105 cm?3 below 29 km and a steep rise above this altitude. Maximum [H2SO4 + HSO3] values of about 3 × 106 cm?3 are reached above 35 km.Partial [HSO3] concentrations increase above 34 km reaching about around 40 km. From the measurements it is concluded that H2SO4 and probably HSO3photolysis have an important influence above 34 km leading to the observed increase of [HSO3] and a depletion of H2SO4vapor.It also seems that the data support the view of heterogeneous HSO3 removal. If correct, this would imply that stratospheric aerosols are formed primarily from HSO3 rather than H2SO4vapor. 相似文献
This article presents a deterministic model for sub-block-level population estimation based on the total building volumes derived from geographic information system (GIS) building data and three census block-level housing statistics. To assess the model, we generated artificial blocks by aggregating census block areas and calculating the respective housing statistics. We then applied the model to estimate populations for sub-artificial-block areas and assessed the estimates with census populations of the areas. Our analyses indicate that the average percent error of population estimation for sub-artificial-block areas is comparable to those for sub-census-block areas of the same size relative to associated blocks. The smaller the sub-block-level areas, the higher the population estimation errors. For example, the average percent error for residential areas is approximately 0.11 percent for 100 percent block areas and 35 percent for 5 percent block areas. 相似文献
This paper uses the catastrophic landslide that occurred in Zhongxing Town, Dujiangyan City, as an example to study the formation mechanism of landslides induced by heavy rainfall in the post-Wenchuan earthquake area. The deformation characteristics of a slope under seismic loading were investigated via a shaking table test. The results show that a large number of cracks formed in the slope due to the tensile and shear forces of the vibrations, and most of the cracks had angles of approximately 45° with respect to the horizontal. A series of flume tests were performed to show how the duration and intensity of rainfall influence the responses of the shaken and non-shaken slopes. Wetting fronts were recorded under different rainfall intensities, and the depth of rainfall infiltration was greater in the shaken slope than in the non-shaken slope because the former experienced a greater extreme rainfall intensity under the same early rainfall and rainfall duration conditions. At the beginning of the rainfall infiltration experiment, the pore water pressure in the slope was negative, and settling occurred at the top of the slope. With increasing rainfall, the pore water pressure changed from negative to positive, and cracks were observed on the back surface of the slope and the shear outlet of the landslide on the front of the slope. The shaken slope was more susceptible to crack formation than the non-shaken slope under the same rainfall conditions. A comparison of the responses of the shaken and non-shaken slopes under heavy rainfall revealed that cracks formed by earthquakes provided channels for infiltration. Soil particles in the cracks of slopes were washed away, and the pore water pressure increased rapidly, especially the transient pore water pressure in the slope caused by short-term concentrated rainfall which decreased rock strength and slope stability. 相似文献
High-accuracy large-eddy simulations of neutral atmospheric surface-layer flow over a gapped plant canopy strip have been
performed. Subgrid-scale (SGS) motions are parameterized by the Sagaut mixed length SGS model, with a modification to compute
the SGS characteristic length self-adaptively. Shaw’s plant canopy model, taking the vertical variation of leaf area density
into account, is applied to study the response of the atmospheric surface layer to the gapped dense forest strip. Differences
in the region far away from the gap and in the middle of the gap are investigated, according to the instantaneous velocity
magnitude, the zero-plane displacement, the potential temperature and the streamlines. The large-scale vortex structure, in
the form of a roll vortex, is revealed in the region far away from the gap. The nonuniform spatial distribution of plants
appears to cause the formation of the coherent structure. The roll vortex starts in the wake of the canopy, and results in
strong fluctuations throughout the entire canopy region. Wind sweeps and ejections in the plant canopy are also attributed
to the large vortex structure. 相似文献
