Numerical modeling has emerged over the last several decades as a widely accepted tool for investigations in environmental sciences. In estuarine research, hydrodynamic and ecological models have moved along parallel tracks with regard to complexity, refinement, computational power, and incorporation of uncertainty. Coupled hydrodynamic-ecological models have been used to assess ecosystem processes and interactions, simulate future scenarios, and evaluate remedial actions in response to eutrophication, habitat loss, and freshwater diversion. The need to couple hydrodynamic and ecological models to address research and management questions is clear because dynamic feedbacks between biotic and physical processes are critical interactions within ecosystems. In this review, we present historical and modern perspectives on estuarine hydrodynamic and ecological modeling, consider model limitations, and address aspects of model linkage, skill assessment, and complexity. We discuss the balance between spatial and temporal resolution and present examples using different spatiotemporal scales. Finally, we recommend future lines of inquiry, approaches to balance complexity and uncertainty, and model transparency and utility. It is idealistic to think we can pursue a “theory of everything” for estuarine models, but recent advances suggest that models for both scientific investigations and management applications will continue to improve in terms of realism, precision, and accuracy. 相似文献

Seawater samples collected at three depths from 68 stations along the Northern Spanish coast were analysed for dissolved/dispersed petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons by UV-fluorescence and for 25 individual compounds by GC-MS. Sampling was performed in December 2002, just after the Prestige oil spill, and in February-March and September 2003. Higher concentrations of total aromatic hydrocarbons were found at all depths in the samples collected during December 2002 off the Galicia coast, with levels ranging between 0.19 and 28.8 microg/L eq. oil (0.1-4.8 microg/L chrysene eq.). These values decreased in the following cruises, till <0.05-2.86 microg/L oil eq. (av. 0.23 microg/L chrysene eq.) in September 2003, possibly representing the background levels for the region. However, in the Cantabrian coast they were still high at the surface in the March cruise, probably by the late arrival of the fuel-oil to this area. Some coastal hot spots were also identified, with values up to 29.2 microg/L fuel-oil eq., close to river mouths and urban areas. The individual PAH distributions in the December 2002 sampling off-Galicia were dominated by alkyl-naphthalene derivatives, consistently with the pattern distribution shown by the fuel-oil water accommodated fraction. The higher concentrations were found in the subsurface samples along the Costa da Morte, the area most heavily affected by the spill (av. 0.46 microg/L Sigma16 PAHs). The rest of the samples collected in other areas exhibited lower concentrations and a more even distribution of 2-4 ring PAHs, that ranged from 0.09 to 0.37 microg/L (av. 0.15 microg/L Sigma16 PAHs), with decreasing trends offshore and downward the water column. Groundwater management needs detailed aquifer characterization, especially in semiarid costal aquifer systems that are under
hydrological pressure. Our study area is in the Tordera delta, northeastern coast of Spain, where a detrital fluvio-deltaic
aquifer system has been developed above granitic basement. The main purpose of this study is to characterize the complex lithological
structure and the seawater intrusion state by combining hydrological information, audiomagnetotelluric (AMT) and seismic reflection
and refraction models. This allowed us to provide spatially continuous information about aquifer properties and processes.
Thus, we have determined the thickness and continuity of the aquifer units, as well as the morphology and depth to the basement.
The models revealed that the main seawater intrusion main path is found in the western deltaic area that coincides with an
existing buried paleochannel. This new result explains the anomalously high chlorine concentrations observed in the deep semiconfined

In this work we analyse the applicability of amplitude grid maps to the routine of geological surveys by means of GPR (ground penetrating radar). Although amplitude grid maps have been commonly used in archaeological surveys, their use in geological prospecting (including the detection of voids and determination of the internal geometry of sedimentary bodies) is not widespread. The direct analysis of GPR-profiles permits the analysis of geometrical features and other qualitative aspects that can be related to changes in EM properties. Aspects such as changes in the density of the banded disposition in radargrams, loss of reflector definition or higher scattering in particular zones of the profiles can give useful, though non-quantitative, information. The GPR wave-amplitude is a qualitative measurement of magnetic properties that can be processed as a semi-quantitative layout. The main differences observed in changing wave amplitude are related to the surveyed materials and their geometry. These changes produce variations in the relative wave amplitude or vertical wave-phase changes related to differences in the propagation velocity, the attenuation factor, the reflectivity and the geometry of the materials. Maps based on the lateral correlation between profiles (C-scans) or the lateral correlation of wave amplitudes along the same profile (as a tomography or Am-scans) permit the analysis of these changes. Variations in amplitude grid maps or Am-scans are related to (i) geometrical changes of surveyed materials, (ii) changes in the dielectric constant, and (iii) changes in the potential penetration depth (higher attenuation in particular zones of a profile) than can be correlated to the type, state or clay content of subsoil materials. Direct analysis of exposures helps to constrain interpretation using the geometrical features in radargrams resulting from the geological structure. In the same way, analysis of geometrical features in radargrams, together with time-slices of C-scans, can be used to determine the areal distribution of changes in the subsoil and approach the changes in EM properties. The La Crocetta mine near Porto Azzurro (Elba Island, Tuscany, Italy) is an important producer of raw material for the ceramic industry. Exploitation focuses on a pervasively sericitized porphyritic aplite of the Tuscan Magmatic Province, locally known as "eurite", which underwent significant potassium enrichment during sericitic alteration. Eurites are located along the hanging wall of the Elba Centrale Fault, a low-angle extensional lineament of regional significance. A later carbonatization stage, apparently associated with high-angle extensional tectonics, locally overprinted the sericitized facies. It is expressed by carbonate ± pyrite ± quartz veins, with adverse effects on ore quality. Sericitization was accompanied by addition of potassium, and loss of Na (± Ca, Fe). Rubidium was not enriched along with potassium during sericitization, contrary to what would be expected for interaction with late-magmatic fluids. New 40Ar–39Ar data from eurites provide an isochron age of about 6.7 Ma for the sericitization, whereas the age of the unaltered protolith is ca. 8.8 Ma. Field evidence indicates the Elba Centrale Fault to be the main channel for the hydrothermal fluids. On the other hand, the involvement of heat and/or fluids contributed by the Porto Azzurro pluton, which crops out in the La Crocetta area, is ruled out by field, geochemical and geochronological data (40Ar–39Ar age of Porto Azzurro =5.9 Ma, i.e. significantly younger than the sericitization event). Fluid inclusion studies suggest that sericitization was associated with a low-temperature (<250 °C) hydrothermal system. Fluids were locally boiling, of variable salinity (4–17 wt% NaCl equiv.), and contained some CO2 (XCO2≤0.027). Their ultimate source is not unequivocally constrained; meteoric and/or magmatic contributions may be possible. Low-salinity (≤2.6 wt% NaCl equiv.), low-temperature (<250 °C) fluids are associated with the late carbonate veining. They are considered to be of dominantly meteoric nature because of their low salinity. In summary, sericitization at La Crocetta is regarded as the product of a detachment fault-related, low temperature hydrothermal system, resulting from the structurally controlled focusing of meteoric and possibly magmatic fluids. Hence, potential targets for exploration for similar resources are represented by aplitic bodies located in the hanging wall of Elba Centrale Fault. The Iberian-Roman Humid Period (IRHP, 2600-1600 cal yr BP), is the most humid phase of the last 4000 yr in southern Spain as recorded in the sedimentary sequence of Zoñar Lake (37°29′00″N, 4°41′22″ W, 300 m a.s.l.). A varve chronology supported by several AMS 14C dates allows study of the lake evolution at annual scale in response to human impact and climate changes. There are four climate phases within this period: i) gradual transition (2600-2500 yr ago, 650-550 BC) from a previous arid period; ii) the most humid interval during the Iberian-Early Roman Epoch (2500-2140 yr ago, 550-190 BC); iii) an arid interval during the Roman Empire Epoch (2140-1800 yr ago, 190 BC AD 150); and iv) a humid period synchronous with the decline of the Roman Empire (1800-1600 yr ago, AD 150-350). Varve thickness and geochemical proxies show a multi-decadal cyclicity similar to modern North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) (60, 20 years) and solar variability cycles (11 yr). The timing and the structure of this humid period is similar to that described in Eastern Mediterranean and northern European sites and supports the same large-scale climate control for northern latitudes and the Mediterranean region. 相似文献

Basic magmatism in central Spain occurred sporadically during a long period of ca. 140 Ma. The geochemical data on representative samples from the five igneous episodes show that different mantle reservoirs were tapped. Crustal involvement (via recycling in mantle sources or by hybridization at emplacement levels) was important in the basic magmas related to the Hercynian orogeny (Gb1 to Gb3 suites). Samples occurring as later dykes have signatures ranging from OIB-like values (Gb4 alkaline lamprophyres) to those of a formerly enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle (tholeiites Gb5). Monthly quantitative Ekman-Birge grab sampling was used to characterize and compare the composition and structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate community inhabiting semi-enclosed polyculture lagoons (SPL) (three sampling sites) and enclosed monoculture ponds (EMP) (two sampling sites) of a lagoonal system of the Bay of Cádiz. The two areas differed considerably in habitat characteristics and aquaculture management. The SPL area was characterized by low rates of water exchange, low fish densities, and the presence of a macroalgal cover. In the EMP area, there was a complete exchange of water daily (by pumping) and a supply of food pellets, density of fish was high, and no vegetative cover was present. There were considerable differences in species composition between habitats with different culture methods: 11 of the 21 most abundant species were exclusive to one or the other. Several epibenthic species were abundant in the polyculture lagoon but were low in density or were absent in monoculture ponds. Some infaunal species, on the other hand, were more abundant in the monoculture ponds. Univeriate measures of community structure (abundance and biomass, Margalef’s species richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and Pielou’s evenness indices) did not indicate significant differences between the SPL and EMP areas. Conversely, the abundance-biomass comparison (ABC) method indicated that, on average, the macrobenthic community was moderately disturbed in the SPL and undisturbed in the EMP areas. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) ordination and hierarchical cluster analysis (Bray-Curtis similarity measure) revealed the occurrence of two main benthic assemblages that corresponded to the aquaculture methods. The different rates of water exchange for the two aquaculture practices seem to have contributed to differences in the composition and structure of the benthic communities. 相似文献

Enhancing the value of an underground mine environment for tourist exploitation involves altering the physico-chemical balance of stone materials whose original mechanical properties guaranteed the structural stability of the site’s galleries and chambers. Humidity and temperature changes caused by the public exhibition of this kind of assets are the main causes of such disorders. After the intervention in the Agrupa-Vicenta mine in La Union (Spain) there were still runoff-water leaks into the mine. These water runoffs through the fault and schistosity planes of the enclosing rock mass give rise to salt precipitation over time. Adapting this mine and turning it into a museum have meant a decrease in relative indoors humidity and an increase in temperature. These variations have caused rocks, which were stable in the original conditions, to increase their rate of physico-chemical weathering due to the polycyclic supergene alteration of the metal sulfides they contain. The resulting release of sulfates into the solution and their subsequent precipitation as single and double salt efflorescence causes haloclasty, deteriorating the rock’s mechanical properties and diminishing the structural stability of the operation. This paper presents the results of characterizing the supergene mineral phases of salt efflorescence in the rock bed enclosing an underground sulfide mine value enhanced for tourist exploitation. Dangers for the structural stability of this type of architectural intervention, associated to the formation of efflorescences, are also identified; these efflorescences are caused by the weathering of rocks that make up its supporting structure. 相似文献
