Stable Isotopes Reveal Complex Changes in Trophic Relationships Following Nutrient Addition in a Coastal Marine Ecosystem 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Complex links between the top-down and bottom-up forces that structure communities can be disrupted by anthropogenic alterations
of natural habitats. We used relative abundance and stable isotopes to examine changes in epifaunal food webs in seagrass
(Thalassia testudinum) beds following 6 months of experimental nutrient addition at two sites in Florida Bay (USA) with different ambient fertility.
At a eutrophic site, nutrient addition did not strongly affect food web structure, but at a nutrient-poor site, enrichment
increased the abundances of crustacean epiphyte grazers, and the diets of these grazers became more varied. Benthic grazers
did not change in abundance but shifted their diet away from green macroalgae + associated epiphytes and towards an opportunistic
seagrass (Halodule wrightii) that occurred only in nutrient addition treatments. Benthic predators did not change in abundance, but their diets were
more varied in enriched plots. Food chain length was short and unaffected by site or nutrient treatment, but increased food
web complexity in enriched plots was suggested by increasingly mixed diets. Strong bottom-up modifications of food web structure
in the nutrient-limited site and the limited top-down influences of grazers on seagrass epiphyte biomass suggest that, in
this system, the bottom-up role of nutrient enrichment can have substantial impacts on community structure, trophic relationships,
and, ultimately, the productivity values of the ecosystem. 相似文献

A water quality investigation was carried out in the Deoria district, Ganga plain, to assess the suitability of surface and
groundwaters for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes. As much as 50 representative samples from river and groundwater
were collected from various stations to monitor the water chemistry of various ions, comprising Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3
−, SO4
2−, NO3
−, Cl−, F−, and trace metals, such as Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd, and Pb. The results showed that electrical conductance (EC), total dissolved
solids (TDS), HCO3
−, Mg2+, Na+, and total hardness (TH) are above the maximum desirable limit, and apart from Fe and Mn all other trace metals are within
the maximum permissible limit for drinking water. The calculated values for sodium absorption ratio (SAR), salinity, residual
sodium carbonate (RSC), and permeability index (PI) indicate well to permissible use of water for irrigation. High values
of Na%, RSC, and Mg-hazard (MH) at some stations restrict its use for agricultural purpose. Anthropogenic activities affect
the spatial variation of water quality. Economic and social developments of the study area is closely associated with the

Different techniques have been used to discuss the existence of significant relation between the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Various studies present their interaction and influence on the natural disasters (i.e. drought, flood, etc.) over large parts of the globe. This study uses a Markov chain method to investigate the relation between the ENSO and IOD for the period of 62 years (1950–2011) and aggregates their influence on the occurrence of floods in Pakistan. Both data sets show similarities in the formation of transition matrices and expected number of visits from one state to another. The strong values of 2-dimensional correlation and high self-communication of the transition states confirm the existence of a possible relation between ENSO and IOD data. Moreover, significant values of dependency and stationary test endorse the applicability of the Markov chain analyses. The independent analysis shows that strong events of both data sets are co-occurred in the same flood years. During the study period maximum number of floods was observed during summer monsoon season. However, further analysis shows that after 1970, Pakistan observed the highest percentage of floods occurred per year during El Nino, Non-ENSO and positive IOD years. These observations and results demonstrate that climate variability especially ENSO and IOD should be incorporated into disaster risk analyses and policies in Pakistan. 相似文献

Sequestration of organic carbon (OC) in environmental systems is critical to mitigating climate change. Organo-mineral associations, especially those with iron (Fe) oxides, drive the chemistry of OC sequestration and stability in soils. Short-range-ordered Fe oxides, such as ferrihydrite, demonstrate a high affinity for OC in binary systems. Calcium commonly co-associates with OC and Fe oxides in soils, though the bonding mechanism (e.g., cation bridging) and implications of the co-association for OC sequestration remain unresolved. We explored the effect of calcium (Ca2+) on the sorption of dissolved OC to 2-line ferrihydrite. Sorption experiments were conducted between leaf litter-extractable OC and ferrihydrite at pH 4 to 9 with different initial C/Fe molar ratios and Ca2+ concentrations. The extent of OC sorption to ferrihydrite in the presence of Ca2+ increased across all tested pH values, especially at pH ≥ 7. Sorbed OC concentration at pH 9 increased from 8.72 ± 0.16 to 13.3 ± 0.20 mmol OC g?1 ferrihydrite between treatments of no added Ca2+ and 30 mM Ca2+ addition. Batch experiments were paired with spectroscopic studies to probe the speciation of sorbed OC and elucidate the sorption mechanism. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy analysis revealed that carboxylic functional moieties were the primary sorbed OC species that were preferentially bound to ferrihydrite and suggested an increase in Fe-carboxylate ligand exchange in the presence of Ca at pH 9. Results from batch to spectroscopic experiments provide significant evidence for the enhancement of dissolved OC sequestration to 2-line ferrihydrite and suggest the formation of Fe–Ca-OC ternary complexes. Findings of this research will inform modeling of environmental C cycling and have the potential to influence strategies for managing land to minimize OM stabilization. 相似文献

A practical, DEM-based practical method is proposed to enhance flood risk management in fluvial areas by quantifying relative
risk as a function of vulnerability to inland and evacuation difficulty. Both measures are based mainly on the topography
of the region, so the method does not require detailed data on the physical characteristics of the land. First, we use the
deterministic 8-node method on a digital elevation map (DEM) to trace storm waterways. Second, we repeat the process on a
reversed DEM to trace evacuation routes that avoid the waterways and zones dangerously close to the rivers. Finally, on the
basis of such two flow lines of evacuee and storm water, we proposed the protocol to evaluate the flood risk at every point
on the map taking into account both the minimum time required for floodwater to arrive and duration of an evacuation from
that location. The time that must be allocated for safe evacuation is defined as the potential flood risk of evacuation (PFRE).
The method is demonstrated on a fluvial area of the Kaki River in Nagaoka city, Japan. In addition, we illustrated the application
of the PFRE map to divide the region into areas of greater or lesser evacuation urgency. 相似文献

We measured the ion conductivity of single-crystal alkali feldspar originating from two different locations in the Eifel/Germany, named Volkesfeld and Rockeskyller sanidine and having potassium site fractions \(C_\mathrm{K}\) of 0.83 and 0.71, respectively. The dc conductivities resulting from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy over the temperature range of 300–900 \(^{\circ }\hbox {C}\) show a weak composition dependence but pronounced differences between the b-direction [\(\perp (010)\)] and \(c^{*}\)-direction [\(\perp (001)\)] of the monoclinic feldspar structure. Conductivity activation energies obtained from the observed linear Arrhenius plots are close to 1.2 eV in all cases, which is closely similar to the activation energies of the \(^{22}\mathrm{Na}\) tracer diffusivity in the same crystals. Taking into account literature data on K tracer diffusion and diffusion correlation effects, the present results point to a predominance of the interstitialcy mechanism over the vacancy mechanism in mass and charge transport on the alkali sublattice in potassium-rich alkali feldspar. 相似文献

In this study, the critical (or maximum) discharge rates before saline water enters a well were determined for vertical and horizontal wells in a freshwater aquifer which is separated from a static saline aquifer by a sharp interface. Flow around the well was solved by integration of a point sink solution along the well axis, and both the critical discharge rate and critical interface rise were determined through a comparison of the heads and vertical gradients at the saline–fresh water interface. The rates were determined for vertical and horizontal wells with various lengths and depths for different aquifer salinities. Results were generalized by drawing dimensionless type curves. The results showed that the dimensionless total critical discharge rates are higher for the longer horizontal wells and longer vertical wells with a certain bottom depth, and they almost linearly decrease with well depth at rates of 0.7–0.9. For the dimensionless well length of 0.2, the dimensionless total discharge rate of a horizontal well is about 0.1 more than that of a vertical well with the same length and well-top depth. Also, the critical discharge rates per unit length of well are inversely proportional to well length and remarkably higher for shallower wells. Additionally, the critical pumping rate is proportional to the salinity difference of the aquifers. These results were confirmed by comparison to existing solutions for vertical wells with dimensionless lengths of 0.2, 0.5 and 0.6, and for critical interface rises in the range of 0.75–0.9. 相似文献

In this study, the effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and recycled construction waste (CW) on bentonite clay stabilisation were investigated. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of specimens was evaluated with different combinations of GGBFS and CW over various curing periods. A series of micro analysis tests consisting of scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray diffraction were also conducted to determine the microstructural arrangement and mineralogical effect of the stabilisation treatment. The UCS results showed an increment in strength after introduction of GGBFS and CW and the longer curing period produced more pronounced results. The optimum additive ratio was calculated as 5 % of slag and 20 % of construction waste under all curing conditions. The micro analytical results also indicated formation of structural bonds between admixtures and bentonite in stabilised specimens, as slag crystals and bentonite particles were observed to occupy the cavities and vesicles on the construction waste grains. However, the experimental data shows that the strength improvement is not significant with the addition of only construction waste. 相似文献

The Cerchar test is one of the appropriate and routine tests for determining the rock abrasion; but as for the costs and pin wear measurement errors in laboratory procedures and lack of access to laboratory equipment, using of numerical modeling can lead to use of greater number of samples required during the course of mechanized excavation and reduce the costs and errors in the laboratory test. In this study, the Cerchar abrasivity test was modeled using PFC3D (Particle Flow Code in 3 Dimensions) software. In order to verify the simulation results, Cerchar laboratory test results obtained by Rostami (Rock Mech Rock Eng 47(5):1905–1919, 2014) were compared with the numerical modeling results. In modeling studies, the effects of some parameters such as apply load, test speed, pin hardness and scratching distance on pin wear were investigated. As a conclusion of the study, good agreement between modeling and experimental results was obtained for a given condition. As in the experiment with various loads in both laboratory tests and modeling, with increasing applied load the Cerchar abrasivity index also increased in the experiment with Rockwell hardness HRC (An abbreviation for Rockwell Hardness measured on the C scale.
