A causeway which had restricted tidal flow in a portion of the Sheepscot River estuary was removed late in 1974. Flowmeter data from moored plankton nets fished over full tidal cycles, and salinity observations made in conjunction with the net sets, were used to evaluate the effects of causeway removal on circulation in the estuary. Tidal flows in the main channel increased by almost 50%. This increase was accompanied by substantial decreases in salinity stratification and in the strength of the gravitational circulation.  相似文献

Secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U–Pb and trace element data are reported for zircon to address the controversial geochronology of eclogite-facies metamorphism in the Lindås nappe, Bergen Arcs, Caledonides of W Norway. Caledonian eclogite-facies overprint in the nappe was controlled by fracturing and introduction of fluid in the Proterozoic—Sveconorwegian—granulite-facies meta-anorthosite-norite protolith. Zircon grains in one massive eclogite display a core–rim structure. Sveconorwegian cores have trace element signatures identical with those of zircon in the granulite protolith, i.e. 0.31Th/U0.89, heavy rare earth element (HREE) enrichment, and negative Eu anomaly. Weakly-zoned to euhedral oscillatory-zoned Caledonian rims are characterized by Th/U0.13, low LREE content (minimum normalized abundance for Pr or Nd), variable enrichment in HREE, and no Eu anomaly. A decrease of REE towards the outermost rim, especially HREE, is documented. This signature reflects co-precipitation of zircon with garnet and clinozoisite in a feldspar-absent assemblage, and consequently links zircon to the eclogite-facies overprint. The rims provide a mean 206Pb/238U crystallization age of 423±4 Ma. This age reflects eclogite-forming reactions and fluid–rock interaction. This age indicates that eclogite-facies overprint in the Lindås nappe took place at the onset of the Scandian (Silurian) collision between Laurentia and Baltica.  相似文献

Dykes of monchiquites of Cainozoic age (37.5±2.3 Ma) are intrusive in Cretaceous sandstones in the Tchircotché area, Upper Benue valley (northern Cameroon). The differentiation of the monchiquites is explained by crystal fractionation of olivine, clinopyroxene, magnetite, ilmenite and apatite. A studied rock has low Sr-isotope ratio (0.70369±10), which is similar to those of the alkali basalts of the Cameroon Line. Therefore the continental crust appears to have no significant role in the genesis of the monchiquites.  相似文献

We have determined the 2-oxo-propyl CH3C(O)CH2 (sometimes called 1-methylvinoxy or acetonyl) radical yield for the reaction of acetone with OH radical relative to the 2-oxo-propyl yields for the reactions of F- and Cl atoms with acetone using the Discharge Flow technique. The 2-oxo-propyl radical has been monitored by Laser Induced Fluorescence LIF at short reaction times in the systems: OH + acetone (R1), F + acetone (R2), and Cl + acetone (R3). From these measurements we have deduced the branching ratio for the 2-oxo-propyl radical formation in the title reaction to be in the range 0.8 R 1.  相似文献

Societies cope with their geographical environment with the help of objects and categories of objects. Objects are cognitive symbols enabling societies to come to terms with the incertainties and complexity of the real. This text begins by presenting processes of objectivation and of categorisation of geographical reality. Then, it analyses how far categorisation of objects influences the practice and the transformation of corresponding reality. Coping with categorisation and transformation, it thus circumscribes the interactions between language, cognition and action by which geographical entities are transformed. It illustrates this thesis with the historical transformation of modes of apprehension of the mountains in the West and the parallel transformation of their usage and the modes of planning applied to them. The catastrophic floods recently occurring in Europe warn of the critical need forhydrologic data on floods over long-time scales. Palaeoflood techniques provideinformation on hydrologic variability and extreme floods over long-time intervals(100 to 10,000 yr) and may be used in combination with historical flood data (last1,000 yr) and the gauge record (last 30–50 yr). In this paper, advantages anduncertainties related to the reconstruction of palaeofloods in different geomorphologicalsettings and historical floods using different documentary sources are described.Systematic and non-systematic data can be combined in the flood frequency analysisusing different methods for the adjustment of distribution functions. Technical toolsintegrating multidisciplinary approaches (geologic, historical, hydraulic and statistical)on extreme flood risk assessment are discussed. A discussion on the potential theoreticalbases for solving the problem of dealing with non-systematic and non-stationary data ispresented. This methodology is being developed using new methodological approachesapplied to European countries as a part of a European Commission funded project (SPHERE).  相似文献

A 2.5-m-thick sequence of lake sediments at the Étang de Grand-Case, Saint Martin (French West Indies) is studied here. Significant hydrological budget fluctuations allows distinction of three main climatic periods: (1) an overall dry period (4200 BP–2300 BP), characterised by carbonated mud, gypsum and storm sand layers; (2) a wet phase (2300 BP–1150 BP) dominated by organic mud; and (3) a more complex phase (1150 BP to present), with detrital inputs due to human activities. Comparison with other regional high-resolution records shows that similar climate modifications typify the whole Mesoamerican and Caribbean area. The climatic phenomena that are implicated in the variations of both precipitation and hurricane frequency over the Lesser Antilles are due to the latitudinal displacement of the inter-tropical convergence zone. These data give new support to the hypothesis of the existence of a correlation between peopling phases and climate variations in the Caribbean as previously proposed by some archaeologists. We investigated chemical weathering in a high elevation granitic environment in three selected watersheds located in the Pyrenees (France). The sites were located on glacial deposits derived from similar Hercynian (∼300 Ma) granites characterized by the occurrence of zoned plagioclases and trace calcic phases (epidote, prehnite, sphene, apatite). The surface waters at those sites show high Ca/Na molar ratios (>1) which could not be explained by the dissolution of the major plagioclase (oligoclase) present in the rocks. The coupled approach of investigating stream water chemistry and the mineralogy and chemistry of rocks and soils allowed us to explore the role of the weathering of trace calcic minerals in calcium export at the watershed scale. The weathering of the trace calcic minerals which represent ∼ 1% of the total rock volume are responsible for more than 90% of the calcium export at the sites. Annual cationic fluxes (∼ 23.104 eq/km2/yr) calculated for the Estibère watershed are among the highest reported for high elevation systems draining granitic rocks and ∼ 80% of this annual cationic flux can be attributed to the weathering of trace calcic phases. Calculations based on isotopic values (87Sr/86Sr) go in the same direction. Except apatite, the trace calcic phases appear to be mainly silicates, thus the type of chemical weathering observed in the Estibère watershed may have an influence on atmospheric CO2 consumption by granite weathering. However, comparison with other watersheds draining granitic environments worldwide, and with the two other sites in the Pyrenees, indicate that the role of trace calcic phases is important in most young environments exposed to chemical weathering (e.g., high elevation catchments on glacial deposits). Other factors such as the date of glacial retreat, the physical denudation rate, the hydrological functioning of the watershed and the nature and structure of the soil cover are also important.  相似文献

Enthalpies of dissolution in HF solutions have been measured at 323 K for a series of hydrous trachyte glasses. Enthalpies of mixing between water and molten trachyte have then been calculated from heat capacity data for the same set of samples and available enthalpy for pure water. The moderately negative enthalpies of mixing suggested at 1 bar by the measurements made on glasses almost disappear when trachyte liquids and water are referred to the same temperature, and particularly so when enthalpies of mixing are calculated for a few kbars pressure. As found for albite and phonolite liquids, trachyte melts thus appear to mix nearly ideally as far as enthalpy is concerned. These results imply that the enthalpy of exsolution of water from magmas is very small or negligible under the P-T-X conditions relevant to trachytic volcanism, even for complete degassing of up to 5 wt% H2O. Furthermore, the viscosity increase associated with exsolution-driven cooling is negligible compared to the decrease caused directly by water exsolution.  相似文献
