With the advent of high-resolution instruments and their use high above most of the telluric water vapor, we can expect to observe the hydrogen pure rotational quadrupole lines at 28, 17, and 12 μm from the atmospheres of the outer planets. We have calculated the best values for the line strengths, pressure-broadening coefficients, diffusion constants, and pressure shifts for these rotational transitions. We have used the collisionally narrowed Galatry profile to calculate brightness temperature line profiles for these H2 transitions for the outer planets Jupiter and Uranus. We have also included the effect of the H2 rotational-translational continuum and the NH3ν2 band.  相似文献

A recent estimate of tidal dissipation by turbulent viscosity in Jupiter's convective interior predicts that the current value of the planet's tidal Q ~ 5 × 106. We point out a fundamental error in this calculation, and show that turbulent dissipation alone implies that at present Q ~ 5 × 1013. Our reduced estimat for the rate of tidal dissipation shows conclusively that tidal torques have produced only negligible modifications of the orbits of the Galilean satellites over the age of the solar system.  相似文献

The structure of the ionosphere of a CO-rich comet is computed using two different models. The first one, the photochemical model, assumes that the dissociation and ionization of cometary neutrals and ions are due to photoionization and photodissociation by solar uv radiation together with dissociative recombinations and ion-neutral reactions. The second one, the internal source model, also incorporates the ionization and dissociation effects of an electric current dischanging through the inner coma. The generation of this current has been discussed in earlier papers. It is concluded that the internal source model can explain qualitatively the basic morphology of the ionospheres of CO-rich comets such as Humason (1962, VIII) and Morehouse (1908, III), whereas the photochemical model cannot. The main aim of this paper is not so much to provide accurate numerical estimates as to draw attention to a process which may very well dominate the structures of cometary ionospheres.  相似文献

The satellite 1966-51C was launched in June 1966 into a polar orbit with perigee height 180 km, apogee height 3600 km, and orbital period 125 min. The orbit contracted rapidly under the influence of air drag, and the satellite decayed in March 1967. The only available observations are from the NASA Minitrack system, and 825 of these have been used with PROP6 orbit refinement program, to determine orbital parameters at 20 epochs. For most of these orbits the standard deviations in inclination and right ascension of the node are less than 0.002° (corresponding to about 200 m cross-track) and the standard deviations in eccentricity are less than 0.00002 (150 m in height).The variation in inclination is analysed to determine upper-atmosphere zonal wind speeds, with excellent resolution in local time. The results, for heights near 210 km and a representative latitude near 30°, indicate west-to-east winds of 100 ± 40 m/s for local time 18–21 h, and east-to-west winds of 80 ± 25 m/s for 02–04 h and 09–12 h local time. The values of the right ascension of the node are also analysed, and provide independent confirmation of the wind speeds obtained from the inclination. Analysis of the decrease in perigree distance indicates values of density scale height within 5% of those predicted by the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere 1972, for the conditions experienced by 1966-51C.  相似文献

It is shown that the field line resonance phenomenon that occurs for quasi-transverse signals in a non-uniform cold plasma generally occurs for disturbances with a compressional magnetic component in a hot plasma like the ring current. The equations describing such localised signals are derived and discussed in various limits. It is pointed out that recent observations of low frequency compressional oscillations on spacecraft may be an example of such localised signals.  相似文献

Four new irons are described; Buenaventura (IIIB) from Chihuahua, Mexico: mass 114 kg; Denver City (anomalous) from Texas, USA: mass 26.1 kg; Kinsella (IIIB) from Alberta, Canada: mass 3.7 kg; and Tacoma (IA) from Washington, USA: mass 17 g. Denver City is unique, i.e., not related to any other known iron. Tacoma is the smallest iron meteorite recorded. Selected recent findings related to climate change in Hong Kong include: (1)The Hong Kong seafloor has yielded a ca0.5-million year record of climate and sealevel changes.(2)Greenhouse gases produced naturally from subaerially exposed continental shelves and oceanic islands were a probable forcing mechanism in triggering the abrupt termination of past ice ages. (3)An analysis of annual mean temperature records has revealed that the urban heat island effect has contributed ca75% of the warming. (4)Past volcanic eruptions are found to lower Hong Kongs temperature and to cause extremely dry and wet years. (5)No evidence can be found for an increase in frequency and intensity of typhoons based on the instrumental record since the end of the Second World War. (6)The observed rate of sealevel rise in the South China Sea is much slower than the predictions of the IPCC Fourth Assessment.
For the Earths management, population growth and the depletion of nonrenewable resources must be recognized as unsustainable. The human impact on the natural hydrological cycle is an important forcing mechanism in climate change. In order to delay the demise of the human race, management must include curbing population growth and much more waste recycling than at present.  相似文献

Summary TheIAU Symposium No. 61 (Perth, 1973, “New Problems in Astrometry’) makes clear that radiosources will play an important role for astrometry in view of the linkage of reference systems. The purposes developed later were to link the various systems from the earth and the solar system to the most inertial possible one. Extragalactic radiosources are the most reliable objects but they are faint. So, intermediate objects are needed. Among them the radiostars, optical objects having radioemission at a certain level and for given frequencies have a fundamental and key position. Most of such radiostars are double or multiple ‘binaries’ as it can be seen from the list of reference stars issued by the Working Group of Commission 24, Working Group created in 1978. The last issue of the core list of radiostars was presented by Ch. de Vegt (Chairman of the WG) on the occasion of the last General Assembly of the IAU (November 1985). A recent study of the system α Scorpii (Antares) has shown that the data concerning the magnitude and the spectral type are not accurate enough, according to the accuracy obtained for the astrometric position (±0 . s 003 for an astrolabe campaign in right ascension). There is also a need for better knowledge about the orbits. In the case of the astrolabe observations, if the distance between the components in <3″ the astrometric position concerns the photocenter and accurate physical properties are needed for comparison with the radio position. Better astrophysical properties are strongly needed for all radiostars to be used as references, during the time the astrometrists have to improve the accuracy of their measurements both in optical and radio fields. Macroseismic studies, linear refraction profiles, and a two-dimensional seismic array study on Mount Etna, have all detected anomalous low velocity zones beneath the volcano. Seismic travel time delays together with high frequency attenuation observations confirm the presence of a large volume of partial melt beneath the volcano.
