Remote sensing of ocean colour yields information on the constituents of sea water, such as the concentration of phytoplankton
pigments, suspended sediments and yellow substances. It is well understood that the study of ocean colour is significantly
related with the primary production and zonation of potential fishing sites in coastal and oceanic waters. The major pigment
constituent is predominated by chlorophyll-a (ocean colour pigment of phytoplankton). The chlorophyll mapping on regular basis
plays a major role in assessing water quality and classifying different water types. IRS P-3 MOS-B satellite data for three
consecutive passes of path 94, during the period of January-February 1997 have been used to derive chlorophyll-a concentration.
The present study emphasizes on the chlorophyll mapping using IRS-P3 MOS-B data for the coastal and offshore water of Maharashtra
coast, India. 相似文献

Aquaculture has emerged as one of the fast growing industries in the developing countries both for domestic consumption as well as for the export. This industry not only generates foreign exchange to the country but also provides employment opportunities to the skilled and unskilled rural poor. On the other hand, aquaculture has also some negative impacts on the environment which are mainly due to conversion of mangroves and agricultural, salination of surface water resources and agricultural land at some places besides causing pollution and diseases. All the major shrimp farming countries of the world have faced environmental problem due to intensification, improper and uncontrolled planning by greed and unlimited profit motives of a section of aquaculture community. In view of this, a proper environmental management is a basic need to sustain the industry in the long run. Selection of a suitable site in the coastal areas is the first and the foremost step which is a crucial factor in determining the success of shrimp farming. The present paper discusses the selection of brackish water aquaculture sites using remote sensing satellite data and GIS on the Cannanore coast. Different aquaculture sites in the area were evaluated using a GIS package. Finally a prioritization map showing the sites in the descending order of their priority was generated. 相似文献

Monitoring the crop acreage and irrigation water requirements vis-a-vis irrigation water supplies is important to obtain a realistic view of the “irrigation potential” and “potential utilised”. Satellite data provides information on crop area and thereby net irrigation water requirements of crops. A pilot study was taken up in Mahendragarh distributary canal in Haryana State to estimate net irrigation water requirement of crops under 17 minors for kharif and rabi seasons of 1992–93 period using IRS-1B satellite geocoded FCC images. These water requirements, when analysed with canal and tubewell water supplies for crops, show largescale deficiencies in the irrigation command area. 相似文献

Large quantities of leachate-contaminated lateritic soil results from dump yards in the southwest coast of India. These dump yards receive large quantities of municipal solid waste which includes chemical, industrial and biomedical wastes. Large areas of land are currently being used for this purpose. An extensive laboratory testing program was carried out to determine the compaction characteristics and hydraulic conductivity of clean and contaminated lateritic soil. Batch tests were used to study the immediate effect of leachate contamination on the properties of lateritic soil. Contaminated specimens were prepared by mixing the lateritic soil with leachate in the amount of 5%, 10% and 20% by weight to vary the degree of contamination. The results indicated a small reduction in maximum dry density and an increase in hydraulic conductivity due to leachate-contamination. The change induced by chemical reaction in the microstructure of the soil was studied by scanning electron microscope before and after contamination of soil with leachate. The structure of the leachate contaminated soil sample appeared to be aggregated in scanning electron microscope analysis. The aggregated structure increases the effective pore space and thus increases the hydraulic conductivity. Fifty percent increase in hydraulic conductivity was observed for specimens prepared at standard Proctor density and mixed with 20% leachate. Compaction characteristics did not change much with the presence of leachate up to 10%. With 20% leachate the maximum dry density decreased slightly indicating excess leachate in the soil. However the changes are not significant. 相似文献

TitaniQ under pressure: the effect of pressure and temperature on the solubility of Ti in quartz 总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3

Quartz and rutile were synthesized from silica-saturated aqueous fluids between 5 and 20 kbar and from 700 to 940°C in a piston-cylinder
apparatus to explore the potential pressure effect on Ti solubility in quartz. A systematic decrease in Ti-in-quartz solubility
occurs between 5 and 20 kbar. Titanium K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements demonstrate that Ti4+ substitutes for Si4+ on fourfold tetrahedral sites in quartz at all conditions studied. Molecular dynamic simulations support XANES measurements
and demonstrate that Ti incorporation onto fourfold sites is favored over interstitial solubility mechanisms. To account for
the P–T dependence of Ti-in-quartz solubility, a least-squares method was used to fit Ti concentrations in quartz from all experiments
to the simple expression
RTlnX\textTiO 2 \textquartz = - 60952 + 1.520 ·T(K) - 1741 ·P(kbar) + RTlna\textTiO 2 RT\ln X_{{{\text{TiO}}_{ 2} }}^{\text{quartz}} = - 60952 + 1.520 \cdot T(K) - 1741 \cdot P(kbar) + RT\ln a_{{{\text{TiO}}_{ 2} }} 相似文献

Spatio-temporal dynamics of heavy metals in sediments of the river estuarine system: Mahanadi basin (India) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Dynamics of heavy metals in the surface sediments of Mahanadi river estuarine system were studied for three different seasons. This study demonstrates that the relative abundance of these metals follows in the order of Fe > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cr > Ni ≥ Co > Cu > Cd. The spatial pattern of heavy metals supported by enrichment ratio data, suggests their anthropogenic sources possibly from various industrial wastes and municipal wastes as well as agricultural runoff. The metal concentrations in estuarine sediments are relatively higher than in the river due to adsorption/accumulation of metals on sediments during saline mixing, while there is a decreasing trend of heavy metal concentrations towards the marine side. The temporal variations for metals, such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni and Pb exhibit higher values during monsoon season, which are related to agricultural runoff. Higher elemental concentrations are observed during pre-monsoon season for these above metals (except Ni) at the polluted stations and for metals, such as Cr, Co and Cd at all sites, which demonstrate the intensity of anthropogenic contribution. R-mode factor analysis reveals that “Fe–Mn oxy hydroxide”, “organic matter”, “CaCO3”, and “textural variables” factors are the major controlling geochemical factors for the enrichment of heavy metals in river estuarine sediment and their seasonal variations, though their intensities were different for different seasons. The relationships among the stations are highlighted by cluster analysis, represented in dendrograms to categorize different contributing sites for the enrichment of heavy metals in the river estuarine system. 相似文献

Occurrence of baddeleyite (ZrO2) which is a rare mineral has been recorded in ferromanganese
nodules of Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). The mineral occurs either as independent isolated
sub-rounded to elliptical grains or in clusters forming fine subhedral crystals (<3 mm) within ferromanganese
concretionary growth bands. The mode of occurrence, textural features and chemistry of the
mineral suggest detrital and possibly an authigenic origin for baddeleyite. For authigenic origin it is
proposed that zirconium might have got released either from the terrigenous sediments or the altered
seafloor rocks forming halogen complexes and subsequently it has re-precipitated in the form of baddeleyite
within manganese nodules under oxic to sub-oxic conditions. 相似文献

Coastal topography is the principal variable that affects the movement of the tsunami wave on land. Therefore, land surface elevation data are critical to a tsunami model for computing extent of inundation. Elevation data from India's remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-1 are available for the entire Indian coastline, while elevation data collected using Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper (ALTM) are only available for selected sections of the coastline. This study was carried out to evaluate the suitability of CARTOSAT-1 and ALTM elevation data sets in the tsunami inundation modeling. Two areas of the coastal Tamil Nadu that were severely affected during the December 2004 tsunami and surveyed extensively for mapping the extent of inundation were selected as the study areas. Elevation data sets from ALTM, CARTOSAT-1 and field measurement collected using Real-time Kinematic GPS (RTK-GPS) were compared for these areas. The accuracy of ALTM and CARTOSAT-1 data, the significance of interpolation methods and data used on model outputs were studied. The analysis clearly revealed that the elevation accuracy of CARTOSAT-1 data (+/?2m) was much lower than ALTM data (+/?0.6m). However, it was found that despite the differing elevation accuracy, both ALTM and CARTOSAT-1 can be used to produce tsunami inundation maps for open coasts with an accuracy of 185 m (2 grid cells) at 75% and 50% confidence level, respectively. 相似文献

Abstract Laboratory tests were conducted on compacted marine sediments to study the effect of salt concentration of permeating fluid on its permeability characteristics. Deep sea sediment samples were collected from water depths varying from 3700 to 4500 m off Mauritius coast. Liquid limit and plasticity index varied widely from 45 to 75 and 10 to 35, respectively. Permeability was found at different void ratios with distilled water and 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 N NaCl solutions as permeating fluid. It was found that permeability increases with an increase in salt concentration for a given void ratio. This is explained by diffused double layer theory. Also, the rate of increase in permeability decreases with increase in salt concentration. The effect of salt concentration seemed to be less at higher void ratios. 相似文献

Effect of Cement and Quarry Dust on Shear Strength and Hydraulic Characteristics of Lithomargic Clay
The lithomargic clay constitutes an important group of residual soils existing under lateritic soils. This soil is found on
the western and eastern coasts of India over large areas. This soil is a problematic one and is very sensitive to water and
loses a greater part of its strength when becomes saturated. These high silt deposits have invited many problems such as slope
failures, foundation failures, embankment failures, uneven settlements etc. In this investigation an attempt is made to study
the effect of cement and quarry dust on shear strength and hydraulic characteristics of the lithomargic clay after the stabilization.
Microfabric and mineralogical studies were carried out to find out the reason for the strength development of the stabilized
soil using SEM and XRD analysis. The results indicated that there is an improvement in the properties of the lithomargic clay
with the addition of cement and quarry dust. The XRD results indicated the formation of CSH and CAH, which are responsible
for strength development in the stabilized soil. 相似文献
