Geothermal observations from a suite of boreholes in western Utah, USA, combined with meteorologic data at nearby weather stations are used to test the hypothesis that temperatures in the earths subsurface contain an accurate record of recent climate change. The change in air temperature over the last hundred years successfully predicts detailed subsurface temperature profiles to better than ±0.05°C, indicating that ground temperatures tract air temperatures over long periods and that climate change signals are conducted into, and recorded in, the solid earth by the process of heat conduction. We combine borehole temperature data with meteorologic data from the nearest weather station to determine the time averaged difference between surface ground temperature and surface air temperature for borehole-weather station pairs and to infer the long term mean air temperature prior to the observational record. For our western Utah sites the preobservational mean temperature is close to the average surface air temperature for this century suggesting that up to 0.5°C of warming deduced from the last 100 years of weather station data may be attributed to recovery from a cool period at the turn of the century.  相似文献

Abstract— Dengli is a highly weathered 243.5-g chondrite that was found in 1976 in the Karakoom desert, Turkmenia. The meteorite contains olivine, high-Ca and low-Ca twinned pyroxenes, plagioclase, merrillite, cryptocrystalline material, and opaque minerals: metallic Fe, Ni, troilite, chromite. Based on the texture and the compositions of olivine (Fa19.6, n = 52, C.V. = 19.3) and low-Ca pyroxene (Fs18.2, n = 27, C.V. = 17.0), Dengli is classified as an H3.8 breccia.  相似文献

Abstract Melnikovo is a relatively unweathered 545.6-g LL6 chondrite that was found in 1983. Only a few poorly defined chondrules are discernable in the examined sections; two of these are enriched in chromite. The meteorite contains olivine (Fa27,8), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs24,4), plagioclase, rare clinopyroxene, chlorapatite, merrillite and opaque minerals, which have a modal abundance (in wt%) of troilite (3.9%), kamacite (0.4%), taenite plus tetrataenite (0.7%), chromite (0.8%), and trace amounts of ilmenite and Mn-ilmenite. The meteorite appears unbrecciated on a centimeter scale.  相似文献

A one-zone model for the late time SN II energized by the radioactive decay56Ni–56Co–56Fe is presented. The model succeeds in reproducing for the late time evolution of H and [Oi] 6300 emission lines in SN1970g for the reasonable set of parameters: mass of ejecta 4M , boundary velocityv 0=4000 km s–1 and amount of56NiM Ni=0.02M . However, a one-zone model does not account for the late time continuum. In the case of SN1980k the radioactive model fits H and [Oi] 6300 emissions att250 day satisfactory but fails at very late time, e.g.,t=670 day when the predicted value of the ratioL(H)/L(6300) is two orders of magnitude smaller than the observed one. We suggest that the strong H emission in SN1980k on the 670th day is due to the interaction of the supernova envelope with the pre-SN wind. The radioactive model for the late time SN II predicts strong Mgii 2800 line and detectable Hei 10830 line in emission and absorption.  相似文献

This all-sky catalogue of unambiguous rotation measure (from a Faraday-thin, one-component, spectrum selection) for 674 galaxies or quasars has been compiled, ordered, and edited from the available literature. All the known applications of the RM distribution toward foreground objects in the Galaxy (i.e., magnetic field in 4 nearby spiral arms and in 4 nearby interstellar magnetic bubbles) have also been catalogued.  相似文献

In this paper we present our most recent results on the sub-iron (Sc to Cr) to Fe nuclei abundance ratios in the low-energy cosmic rays of 50 to 250 MeV nucl.–1 and their implications as observed in theSkylab experiment. In view of the importance of this ratio in determining the cosmic-ray pathlength in interstellar medium, we have obtained additional data in the same detector module and the results of final analysis are reported. Charge determinations in the Lexan detector were made from an average of about four independent measurements ofZ for each of the cosmic-ray events and the mean charge resolution is obtained asZ/Z0.2. From about 100 events of calcium to nickel in low-energy cosmic rays, sub-iron (Sc to Cr) to Fe–Co ratio is determined as 1.43±0.40 in 50–250 MeV nucl.–1. This shows a large energy dependence of the ratio as compared to the value of 0.4–0.8 in 200–1000 MeV nucl.–1 as measured by many investigators. The origin of this large enhancement of the ratios in low-energy cosmic rays is not known at present. Some possible suggestions are briefly mentioned.  相似文献

Several criteria are proposed on the base of which a multilevel algorithm of the period detection is constructed. In the present work we consider the questions of star formation and evolution of nearby dwarf galaxies. We describe the method of star formation history determination based on multicolor photometry of resolved stars and models of color-magnitude diagrams of the galaxies. We present the results of star formation rate determination and its dependence on age and metallicity for dwarf irregular and dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the two nearby galaxy groups M81 and Cen A. Similar age of the last episode of star formation in the central part of the M81 group and also unusually high level of metal enrichment in the several galaxies of the Cen A group are mentioned. We pay special attention to the consideration of perspectives of star formation study in nearby dwarf galaxies with he new WSO-UV observatory.  相似文献

The studied region is a part of the current circuit of a magnetic loop in a solar active region in the altitude range of 1400–2500 km above the photosphere. At the earliest stage of development of a flare process, the magnetic field of the loop was assumed to be stationary and uniform in the interval corresponding to weak fields (the so-called deca-hectogauss fields). The conditions for emergence and development of instability of the second harmonic of Bernstein modes in this previously unexamined region were determined. This instability (and low-frequency instabilities emerging later) was assumed to be caused by the sub-Dreicer electric field of the loop, while pair Coulomb collisions were considered to be the major factor hindering its development. The obtained extremely low instability thresholds point to the possibility of subsequent emergence of low-frequency instabilities (and plasma waves corresponding to them) with much higher threshold values against the background of saturated Bernstein turbulence. The frequency of electron scattering by turbulence pulsations in this scenario normally exceeds the frequency of pair Coulomb (primarily ion–electron) collisions. Both the quasistatic sub-Dreicer field in the loop and the weak spatial inhomogeneity of plasma temperature and density were taken into account in the process of derivation and analysis of the dispersion relation for low-frequency waves. It was demonstrated that the solutions of the obtained dispersion relation in the cases of prevalent pair Coulomb collisions and dominant electron momentum losses at pulsations of saturated Bernstein turbulence are morphologically similar and differ only in the boundary values of perturbation parameters. In both cases, these solutions correspond to the two wave families, namely, kinetic Alfven waves and kinetic ion acoustic waves. These waves have their own electric fields and may play the important role in the process of preflare acceleration of energetic electrons.  相似文献

The Sun is an effective particle accelerator that produces solar energetic particle (SEP) events, during which particles of up to several GeVs can be observed. These events, when they are observed at Earth with the neutron monitor network, are called ground-level enhancements (GLEs). Although these events with their high-energy component have been investigated for several decades, a clear relation between the spectral shape of the SEPs outside the Earth’s magnetosphere and the increase in neutron monitor count rate has yet to be established. Hence, an analysis of these events is of interest for the space weather and for the solar event community.In this article, SEP events with protons accelerated to above 500 MeV were identified using data obtained with the Electron Proton Helium Instrument (EPHIN) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) between 1995 and 2015. For a statistical analysis, onset times were determined for the events and the proton energy spectra were derived and fitted with a power law.As a result, we present a list of 42 SEP events with protons accelerated to above 500 MeV measured with the EPHIN instrument onboard SOHO. The statistical analysis based on the fitted spectral slopes and absolute intensities is discussed, with special emphasis on whether an event has been observed as a GLE. Furthermore, we are able to determine that the derived intensity at 500 MeV and the observed increase in neutron monitor count rate are correlated for a subset of events.  相似文献
