This study describes the influence of submersed plant beds on spatial distributions of key water quality variables. An on-board
flow-through water sampling system was used to investigate patterns in turbidity, chlorophyll-a, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH across a robust stand of the submersed plant Stuckenia pectinata. Spatially interpolated maps show that water quality conditions were significantly altered within this plant bed, especially
during months of peak biomass, and that reduction of suspended particles focused at the bed’s edge. Comparison with a suite
of submersed plant beds indicated that patterns were related to canopy height, shoot density, and cross-shore bed width. Wide
and dense stands with tall canopies showed reduced turbidity and increased light penetration, while smaller sparser beds often
showed elevated within-bed turbidity. These results suggest that bed effects on water quality conditions vary seasonally with
plant canopy architecture and bed size, providing tentative guidelines for restoring self-sustaining beds. 相似文献

Although there is a substantial amount of research on households’ hurricane evacuation decision making, there is much less
research on the logistical issues involved in implementing those evacuations. The limited research on household evacuation
logistics has consistently shown that most evacuees stay in the homes of friends and relatives or in commercial facilities
rather than in public shelters. However, evacuation logistics—which can be defined as the activities and associated resources
needed to reach a safe location and remain there until it is safe to return—encompasses a much broader range of behaviors
than this. The present study extends previous research by reporting data on other aspects of evacuation logistics such as
departure timing, vehicle use, evacuation routes, travel distance, shelter type, evacuation duration, and evacuation cost.
Hurricane Lili evacuation data at the county level are generally consistent with the data from previous hurricanes, but there
is notable variation across counties studied here. There were only modest correlations of demographic and geographic variables
with the evacuation logistics variables, a result that indicates further research is needed to better understand what happens
between the time an evacuation decision is made and the time re-entry is begun. Moreover, research is needed to understand
the logistics of evacuation by special populations such as transients and households with disabled members. 相似文献

In this study, we used data recorded by two consecutive passive broadband deployments on the Gulf of Aden northern margin, Dhofar region, Sultanate of Oman. The objective of these deployments is to map the young eastern Gulf of Aden passive continental margin crust and upper mantle structure and rheology. In this study, we use shear-wave splitting analysis to map lateral variations of upper mantle anisotropy beneath the study area. In this study, we found splitting magnitudes to vary between 0.33 and 1.0 s delay times, averaging about 0.6 s for a total of 17 stations from both deployment periods. Results show distinct abrupt lateral anisotropy variation along the study area. Three anisotropy zones are identified: a western zone dominated by NW–SE anisotropy orientations, an eastern zone dominated with NE–SW anisotropy orientations, and central zone with mixed anisotropy orientations similar to the east and west zones. We interpret these shorter wavelength anisotropy zones to possibly represent fossil lithospheric mantle anisotropy. We postulate that the central anisotropy zone may be representing a Proterozoic suture zone that separates two terranes to the east and west of it. Certain biomarkers in petroleum provide information on of the geologic age of its source rock and these can also be used to track the evolution, radiation and relationships between taxa and as proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Triaromatic 23,24-dimethylcholesteroids (TA-DMC), which undoubtedly derive from 23,24-dimethylcholesterols in dinoflagellates, haptophytes and diatoms, provide a useful parameter to distinguish Paleozoic from Mesozoic and younger oil and rock extracts at higher specificity than previously proposed biomarkers. In this report, we present a study of the relative abundance of a novel series of TA-DMC in source rock extracts and crude oil from different global localities and ages. Based on their taxon specificity for important primary producers, such biogeochemicals also have implications for paleoenvironmental studies, including paleoclimate and global change, such as radiations following the Permian-Triassic boundary mass extinction. 相似文献

Estimation of the degree of local seismic wave amplification (site effects) requires precise information about the local site conditions. In many regions of the world, local geologic information is either sparse or is not readily available. Because of this, seismic hazard maps for countries such as Mozambique, Pakistan and Turkey are developed without consideration of site factors and, therefore, do not provide a complete assessment of future hazards. Where local geologic information is available, details on the traditional maps often lack the precision (better than 1:10,000 scale) or the level of information required for modern seismic microzonation requirements. We use high-resolution (1:50,000) satellite imagery and newly developed image analysis methods to begin addressing this problem. Our imagery, consisting of optical data and digital elevation models (DEMs), is recorded from the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) sensor system. We apply a semi-automated, object-oriented, multi-resolution feature segmentation method to identify and extract local terrain features. Then we classify the terrain types into mountain, piedmont and basin units using geomorphometry (topographic slope) as our parameter. Next, on the basis of the site classification schemes from the Wills and Silva (1998) study and the Wills et al (2000) and Wills and Clahan (2006) maps of California, we assign the local terrain units with V s 30 (the average seismic shear-wave velocity through the upper 30m of the subsurface) ranges for selected regions in Mozambique, Pakistan and Turkey. We find that the applicability of our site class assignments in each region is a good first-approximation for quantifying local site conditions and that additional work, such as the verification of the terrain’s compositional rigidity, is needed. 相似文献

We report on the use of X-ray diffractometry under controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity (RH-XRD) for
the investigation of NaCl deliquescence in the pore space of glass filter frits, which were used as model substrates. The
study confirms that RH-XRD is an appropriate experimental technique for the in situ observation of phase transformation in
porous materials. It is used for an investigation of both the deliquescence kinetics and the deliquescence humidity within
pores of different median pore diameter. Several major influences affecting deliquescence rates in the pore space close to
the surface of a porous material are discussed. It appears that quite short-term variation of ambient relative humidity, e.g.,
typical daily fluctuations, might induce damaging deliquescence–crystallization cycles within the pore space of building materials.
In agreement with theoretical considerations it was found that confinement of NaCl crystals in pores with median diameters
in the range 1.4–70 μm does not affect the deliquescence humidity of the salt. 相似文献

In recent months there has been an explosion of interest in using the Web to create, assemble, and disseminate geographic information provided voluntarily by individuals. Sites such as Wikimapia and OpenStreetMap are empowering citizens to create a global patchwork of geographic information, while Google Earth and other virtual globes are encouraging volunteers to develop interesting applications using their own data. I review this phenomenon, and examine associated issues: what drives people to do this, how accurate are the results, will they threaten individual privacy, and how can they augment more conventional sources? I compare this new phenomenon to more traditional citizen science and the role of the amateur in geographic observation. 相似文献

The crystallization of plagioclase feldspar from magmatic liquid has been investigated experimentally under equilibrium conditions at 1 atm total pressure in the temperature range 1400-1095°C. Natural and synthetic melts of composition basalt to rhyolite were used, crystallizing plagioclase of composition An89-An32.The experimental results are analyzed initially in terms of elemental plagioclase/melt partition coefficients (D). DSi is always less than unity and is invariant with temperature. DA1 is always greater than unity and is relatively insensitive to temperature. DNa is less than unity above 1200°C and is strongly dependent upon temperature. DCa is greater than unity below 1430°C and is strongly dependent upon temperature.Analysis of the temperature-dependence of equilibrium constants for plagioclase-melt formation and exchange reactions in which several mixing models for the melt are considered, leads to the conclusion that, with appropriate choice of melt-components, the melt-components mix quasi-ideally. At fixed temperature in the absence of H2O, the equilibrium constant for the equilibrium of albite with the melt is insensitive to changes in melt-composition, and is insensitive to changes in pressure up to at least 10 kbars. As a consequence the composition of plagioclase crystallizing at known temperature and at low total pressure from a dry melt of known composition may be predicted []. However, the equilibrium constant is sensitive to changes in water pressure.The analysis further suggests that Na is intimately associated with tetrahedrally-coordinated Al in the melt, while Ca appears to be partitioned between at least two distinct melt-sites. 相似文献
