The relationships between phytoplankton productivity, nutrient distributions, and freshwater flow were examined in a seasonal
study conducted in Escambia Bay, Florida, USA, located in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Five sites oriented along the salinity
gradient were sampled 24 times over the 28-mo period from 1999 to 2001. Water column profiles of temperature and salinity
were measured along with surface chlorophyll and surface inorganic nutrient concentrations. Primary productivity was measured
at 2 sites on 11 dates, and estimated for the remaining dates and sites using an empirical regression model relating phytoplankton
net production to the product of chlorophyll, euphotic zone depth, and daily solar insolation. Freshwater flow into the system
varied markedly over the study period with record low flow during 2000, a flood event in March 2001, and subsequent resumption
of normal flow. Flushing times ranged from 1 d during the flood to 20 d during the drought. Freshwater input strongly affected
surface salinity distributions, nutrient flux, chlorophyll, and primary productivity. The flood caused high turbidity and
rapid flushing, severely reducing phytoplankton production and biomass accumulation. Following the flood, phytoplankton biomass
and productivity sharply increased. Analysis of nutrient distributions suggested Escambia Bay phytoplankton alternated between
phosphorus limitation during normal flow and nitrogen limitation during low flow periods. This study found that Escambia Bay
is a moderately productive estuary, with an average annual integrated phytoplankton production rate of 290 g C m−2 yr−1. 相似文献

Maryland’s coastal bays provide habitat for juveniles of many commercially and recreationally important species of shellfish and finfish. Since 1972, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has conducted the Maryland Coastal Bays Trawl and Seine Survey to monitor the populations of key species. The survey has undergone substantial spatial and methodological changes affecting the interpretation of simple indices of abundance. We developed generalized linear models to standardize the indices of abundance of five commonly caught fish species: Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus, weakfish Cynoscion regalis, spot Leiostomus xanthurus, bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli, and summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus. Density declined significantly since 1972 for menhaden, bay anchovy, and spot in at least one region within the coastal bays. The northern bays had significantly higher densities than the southern bays for all species. Changes in abundance indices of the five species examined were not related to sea grass coverage, temperature, salinity, nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios, and other habitat variables but were likely a result of stock-wide recruitment processes. 相似文献

The global coastal zone is characterized by high biological productivity and serves as an important channel through which materials are transferred from land to the open ocean, yet little is known how it will be affected by climate change. Here, we use Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, a semi-enclosed subtropical embayment partially surrounded by a mountainous watershed and fed by river runoff as an example to explore the potential impact of climate change on the pelagic and benthic cycling of nitrogen. We employ a nine-compartment nitrogen cycle biogeochemical box model and perturb it with a set of four idealized climate scenarios. We find that hydrological changes play a dominant role in determining the ecosystem structure, while temperature changes are more important for the trophic state and stability of the ecosystem. The ecosystem stability against storm events does not significantly change under any scenario. The system remains autotrophic in the future; however, it becomes significantly less autotrophic under drier climate, while it turns slightly more autotrophic under wetter climate. These findings may have implications for other high island watershed and coastal ecosystems in the tropics and subtropics. 相似文献

Summary. A new set of 1×1° mean free-air anomalies in the Indian Ocean is determined on the basis of previously published free-air anomaly maps (Talwani & Kahle) and the most recent Lamont surface ship gravity measurements. The data are then used to compute a (total) 1×1° gravimetric Indian Ocean geoid. The computation is carried out by combining the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) GEM-6 geoid and a difference geoid that corresponds to the differences between the set of 1×1° surface gravity values and the GEM-6 gravity anomalies. The difference geoid is highest over the Madagascar Ridge (+ 20 m) and lowest over the Timor Trough (-30 m). The total geoid is compared with GEOS-3 radar altimeter derived geoid profiles and geophysical implications are discussed. 相似文献

Double-packer injection tests have been carried out in a borehole in the Chalk of Hampshire and a borehole in the Permian Penrith Sandstone of Cumbria, England. The tests have been supplemented by borehole logging and television inspections and by laboratory measurements on cores. A new mathematical treatment has enabled results to be calculated for injection test intervals containing fissures. In both formations, transmissivity immediately around the borehole is dominated by a few major fissures. In the Penrith Sandstone there is good agreement between intergranular hydraulic conductivity measurements and packer-test results in the portions of the borehole which do not contain major fissures. In the Chalk, the packer-test values are always higher than the intergranular measurements, suggesting that some degree of fissuring is present throughout. 相似文献

Expressions for both the rectilinear and rotational inertial and damping coefficients for a circular monolithic tower of uniform radius are derived. The analysis matches the fluid velocity, derived from potential theory, with the structural velocity in sway. That is, the motions of the tower are assumed to be in a vertical plane. The analysis is then applied to a tower composed of (lumped-mass) elements, where the expressions for the added-mass and damping coefficients are shown to be functions of wave number. The added-mass is shown to be a product of two wave systems: a travelling wave system, which is responsible for the radiation damping, and a standing wave system, called the evanescent system, which is attached to the structure. The added-mass of the evanescent system is negative for small wave numbers, while that of the travelling waves is positive. The negative sign simply means that the inertial force of the evanescent waves is 180° out of phase with that of the travelling system. Furthermore, it is shown that the contributions of the two wave systems to the total added-mass of the structure counteract each other, resulting in a total added-mass which varies gradually with the wave number. Finally, the analysis is applied to an experiment, and results of the analysis and the experiment are found to agree rather well. 相似文献
